HOW FAITH COMMUNITIES CAN LEADVOLUNTEER MOBILIZATION FOR TUTOR/MENTOR PROGRAMS
A strategy of the Tutor/Mentor Connection, www.tutormentorconnection.org
One person trained twelve human beings who went on to so influence theworld that time itself is now recorded as being before (B.C.) or after (A.D.) his
existence.
This quote was taken from the introduction of the book "Jesus, CEO: UsingAncient Wisdom for Visionary Leadership", written by Laurie Beth Jones andpublished by Hyperion. It shows how much power one person has to changethe world. We hope it inspires church leaders to use there communications
systems to change the future for millions of at-risk youth throughout America,and the world.
Read and share the ideas in the following pages to see how faith communitiescan help transform the lives of youth living in big city poverty neighborhoods.

If the goal is to help kids living in highpoverty neighborhoods be startingjobs/careers by their mid-twenties.
How do we help tutor/mentor programs connectwith youth when they are young, and stayconnected to those kids from when we first meet
them, to when they need our help as adults?.
We are stillconnected, via theInternet, 16 yearslater.

When a faith leader, or youth minister,
communicates, many listen. Many follow.
Use personal and organizational leadership, web site and communications to connect membersof your network to T/M programs in all parts of Chicago on a consistent, on-going basis, usingInternet directories such as www.tutormentorconnection.org as resource for finding programs.

OUTREACH STRATEGY:
We want to get faith groups inaffluent suburban areas, as wellas in inner city areas, to bedelivering sermons on a regular
basis, that tie scripture andservice, and point members totutor/mentor programs thatalready exist, or toneighborhoods, where new
programs need to be created.
In this graphic, we illustrate how one faith leader (Rev. Hall), can use his/her blog, sermon, radio
show and web site, to reach out to members of the congregation, and provide information they canshare with people in their own networks. We also show how these faith leaders can host networkingsessions at the November and May Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference, inChicago (see www.tutormentorconference.org ) and how they can host events at different church,mosque and temple locations, during January and August, to draw attention to tutor/mentorprograms in their own neighborhood, or in neighborhoods that they have adopted.

STRATEGIC TIME FRAMES TO DELIVER THIS MESSAGE:IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU COMMUNICATE AND WHAT YOU
COMMUNICATE
1) late August (with a "be a volunteer" message to support Back- to-Schoolvolunteer recruitment)
2) first Sunday in November (Tutor/Mentor Week - give recognition tostudents, volunteers and leaders who have joined such programs);
3) mid February - ( profile volunteers, tell of success stories, the need
for volunteers to be leaders, the need for reinforcements, etc.);
4) late April (encourage participation in the Tutor/Mentor Conference);give praise for the work volunteers, students and programs have done overthe past year, talk about the need for continuing this work during the next
year
In each of these messages, include the T/MC web site ofwww.tutormentorconnection.org, because that is where their members can gofor more information of what it takes to build and sustain a great mentoring program.
