Using this Workbook In For the Instructor, you will find an outline of each session (showing which exam objectives covered in each session†) and several sample lesson plans. These are included to give you an overview of the training content and to help you structure your lessons. The exercises in this workbook have been constructed with the exam objectives in mind and will greatly aid your students' retention of information. The following types of exercises are included for each session of training:

• Fill-in-the-Blank Exercise – The student completes a comprehensive fill-in-the-blank exercise while watching each session of the training. Each Fill-in-the-Blank Exercise follows the instructor's lecture and can be used as a review for the Quiz, for the training Pre-Tests and Post-Tests, and for the Network+ exam.

• Glossary Crossword and Glossary Word Search – The terms used in these puzzles are taken directly from each session's glossary (the glossary for each session is slightly different). The puzzles are intended to help your students become more familiar with common terminology.

• Short Essay – Each session includes short writing exercises that require students to explain in their own words a key aspect of the training. This helps them hone their understanding of key topics.

• Group Activity – These exercises help students learn by teaching. Students research a topic as a team and then prepare a short in-class presentation of their discoveries.

• Quiz – These quizzes will help you gauge your students' progress. They also provide your students additional preparation for the training Pre-Tests and Post-Tests and for the certification exams.

These workbook exercises, used in conjunction with the LearnKey training, give your students the best learning experience possible so they will be well prepared to pass the Network+ exam. Reviewing the Exam Objectives Make sure you take some time to review the Network+ exam objectives—especially before planning your lessons. How to Use the Sample Lesson Plans The sample lesson plans are intended to assist you in planning your lessons. Use them as is or customize them to meet the objectives and time constraints of your individual classes. In the sample lesson plans,

• Session segments are underlined. As students watch a session, they should complete the corresponding Fill-in-the-Blank Exercise.

• Supplemental activities are italicized. These include workbook exercises (crosswords, word searches, etc.), supplemental readings, and session labs.

• Training Pre-Tests and Post-Tests are bolded.

About CompTIA Network+® Certification CompTIA Network+® certification validates the skills of a networking professional who has at least nine months of experience in network support or administration or adequate academic training. The certification is viewed as the perfect entry into a networking career and is recognized as an accepted foundation-level, vendor-neutral certification for networking professionals. Those who earn Network+ certification show that they have the expertise and knowledge to support and implement networks. Individuals with Network+ certification are set apart in today's competitive job market, with benefits such as more employment opportunities, greater earning potential, and career advancement. Many major companies include CompTIA Network+ certification as part of their certification tracks. Your Expert The LearnKey Network+ Certification course is taught by Mike Meyers, who presents the most up-to-date, comprehensive information available to help your students prepare for the Network+ exam. Mike Meyers is a dynamic lecturer and leading authority on IT certifications. He exudes an incredible enthusiasm for high tech, and his flair for conceptualizing technical information and providing explanations that make sense is unmatched in the industry. You will find his presentation to be thorough and engaging. What is CompTIA? The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is an organization whose mission is to advance the growth of the IT industry through standards, professional competence, education, and business solutions. CompTIA serves as the industry's largest supplier of vendor-neutral IT certification exams, such as Network+. CompTIA works closely with a group of industry experts to provide the resources and subject matter necessary to build its exams. What is the CompTIA Network+ Exam Like? The CompTIA Network+ exam is a computer-based test (CBT) with one part that consists of 72 questions. Ninety minutes are allowed to complete the exam. While there are no pre-requisites, it is recommended that candidates have earned CompTIA A+ certification and have nine months networking experience. The minimum passing score is 646 out of a range of 100-900. For additional information on the objectives of the CompTIA Network+ exam and to learn how to register, visit

http://www.comptia.org/certification/network It is suggested that instructors walk their students through this website so they are familiar with the information it contains, especially the Frequently Asked Questions.

Session 1 Short Essay Instructions: Write the following short essays in your own words using the space provided. [Brackets enclose references where answers are found in the session. Answers will vary.] 1. Describe the following topologies. [Topologies: Bus Topology, Ring Topology,

Star Topology] Bus Bus topology was the first topology used in practical networks. It is

referred to as a physical topology. It uses a single cable that is attached to the computer and runs into the ceiling.

Ring Ring topologies are arranged in a circle. Data goes around the ring in a specific direction.

Star Star topologies are arranged in a star shape and are attached to a central device from which all data goes in and out. This topology did not see a lot of use in the practical networking world.

2. What is the main difference between multimode and singlemode fiber optic cabling? Can these two different types of cabling be distinguished by visual inspection of the cable? [Cabling and Connectors: Fiber Optics] Multimode cabling uses LED to transmit light signals while singlemode uses lasers to transmit light signals. These types of cabling cannot be distinguished by visual inspection.

3. What does the 5-4-3 rule state? [Modern Ethernet: 5-4-3 Rule]

The 5-4-3 rule states that between any two computers there can be five segments, four repeaters, and three populated segments.

Session 1 Group Activity

Instructions: Divide into groups and have each group select one of the following subjects to research. Each group should prepare a short 5-10 minute presentation of the information researched to be given in class. 1. In this session, various types of network topologies were introduced. Research

bus, star, and ring topologies. Find out when they created, who created them, and why they were created. What advantages and disadvantages does each topology have over the other two topologies? Describe a practical use for each topology.

2. In this session, you were introduced to four types of cabling: coaxial, fiber optic,

twisted pair, and FireWire. Research these types of cables and discuss a practical use for each type of cabling. Which type of cabling is the fastest? Which is the most practical to use in a network environment? Which would not be the best type of cabling to use in a network environment? Find examples of these four types of cabling to show in your presentation.

3. Research each of the 802 standards presented in this session (802.1, 802.2,

802.3, 802.5, 802.11). Find out when these standards were created, who created them, and why they were created. What advantages and disadvantages does each standard have over the other four standards? Describe instances in which each standard might be used.
