Networks connect people to each other

(When we let them)

Literacy, 400 BCE = Threat to Knowledge

Literacy, 1500 CE = Control of Knowledge

Literacies, 2015 BCE = Management & Synthesis of Knowledge

Broadcast media

Networks are not just for consuming, but connecting.

Three facts:

(Um…schools are systems.)

#1.

#2.

But schools need to learn & model good network literacies

Not just judge.

A networked teacher is always a learner, too.

Key Literacies to Learn & Foster

Literacies of critical consumption

Literacies of connection

“The internet is on principle a system that you reveal yourself to in order to fully

enjoy, which differentiates it from, say, a music player. It is a TV that watches you.”

- Edward Snowden, in The Washington Post

Literacies of privacy

Literacies of power & privilege

Literacies of conflict management

Literacies of contribution & collaboration
