DEFINITION

What is a Network ?

A network is simply two or more computers that are linked together.

TYPES OF TOPOLOGY

1.Point-to-point

2.Bus

3.Star

4.Ring or circular

5.Mesh

6.Tree

7.Hybrid

STAR TOPOLOGY

All devices connect to acentral device, calledhub.

All data transferredfrom one computer toanother passes through hub.

Page 10: network essential ppt

STAR TOPOLOGY

Page 11: network essential ppt

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE

1) Easy to install and wire. 1) Requires more cable length

than a linear topology.

2) If any node or cable fails,

other nodes are not effected.

2) If the hub or concentrator

fails, nodes attached are

disabled.

3) Easy to detect faults and to

remove parts.

3) More expensive than linear

bus topologies because of

the cost of the hubs.

BUS TOPOLOGY

All computers and devices connected to central cable or bus.

The central cable is the backbone cable.

The devices or nodes are attached with the bus through interface connecter.

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE

1) Easy to connect computer or

peripheral to a linear bus.

1) Entire network shuts down if

there is a break in the main

cable.

2) Requires less cable length

than a star topology.

2) Terminators are required at

both ends of the backbone

cable.

3) If one node fails, other nodes

are not effected.

3) Difficult to identify the

problem if the entire network

shuts down.

RING TOPOLOGY

In ring topology, each computer is connected to the next computer and the last is connected to the first.

Data travels from device to device around entire ring, in one direction.

In this way, the last node connects to the first to complete the ring.

RING TOPOLOGY

Page 17: network essential ppt

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE

1) It is less expensive than star topology.

1) Adding or removing a computer from network effects the whole networks.

2) It is easy to install and to

maintain.

2) If any of the nodes fail then the

ring is broken and data cannot

be transmitted successfully. 3) It is difficult to troubleshoot

the ring.
