• Support for Web Services at the Automation Network Level—Allows you to develop facility-specific advanceddata interfaces and applications.

• Embedded Site Management Portal SystemConfiguration Software—Provides you with password-protectedaccess to system configuration, monitoring, commanding, diagnosis, and cloud-based applications from anydevice with web browser software without the need for separate workstation software.

• Supervision of Controller Networks Including BACnet MS/TP, BACnet IP, N2 Bus, LONWORKS, ModbusRTU, Modbus TCP, M-Bus (EN 1434-3) serial and IP, KNX IP, and third-party protocol devices—Supportsconnectivity to open network standards for complete flexibility in the selection of field devices.

• Support for Dual Trunks—Significantly improves the flexibility and extends the investment of integrations tothird-party equipment. The dual trunk feature potentially reduces the number of NIEx9s required on a projectand allows you to add integrations to existing NIEx9s that are at Release 7.0 and later. You can more easilyadapt to the requirements of projects that have fewer devices that require integration but use separate networksand different protocols.

NIEx9 NetworkingNIEx9s have multiple connection port options that allowyou to build an extremely flexible network at theautomation and enterprise level of your system, as wellas at the field controller and data acquisition levels.

IP Ethernet NetworkNIEx9s connect directly to IP Ethernet networks runningat 10, 100, or 1,000 Mbps (depending on the model).Authorized users log in to the Site Director to access theentireMetasys system for the site. Data transmission onthe network uses standard IT protocols, services, andformats. Networks in different buildings may beinterconnected using standard WAN technologies andnetwork service providers. The speed of transmissiondepends on the technology used.

Remote Access to NIEsThe NIEx9 can be accessed remotely over standardWANinfrastructures, over the Internet using an ISP line, orover the public telephone network using a modem andPoint-to-Point Protocol (PPP). Most NIEx9models supportan external modem.

Launcher ApplicationThe Launcher is a software application that you downloadwhen you browse to any Metasys server or supervisoryengine on the building network. After you install theLauncher software, use it to launch the SMP UI. Fordetails, refer to the Launcher Tool Help (LIT-12011742).

ADS/ADXThe Application and Data Server/Extended Applicationand Data Server (ADS/ADX) is an optional softwarepackage running on a computing platform that providesa location for storage of the system configurationdatabase, trend logs, alarm logs, audit trails, andgraphics.

An ADS/ADX configured as the Site Director allowsmoreconcurrent users and coordinates access to allcomponents on a site connected over the network,Internet, or telephone line via dial-up communication.Refer to the Application and Data Server (ADS) andExtended Application and Data Server (ADX) ProductBulletin (LIT-1201525) for more information.

Field Networks and ProtocolsThe NIEx9 communicates data from one field network toanother and from the field network level to the enterpriseand automation network level, enabling your system tooperate as one virtual control network.

Automation Level CommunicationNIEx9s communicate internal system data usingpeer-to-peer BACnet messaging over the IP Ethernetnetwork. Each NIEx9 shares data and can accessinformation on the other NAEx5s or NIEx9s connectedon the network, which enables coordination and controlof the entire BMS.

BACnet ProtocolThe automation level communication also supports theBACnet protocol and facilitates the network integrationof other systems and devices that use BACnet.

The NIEx9 supports the BACnet services and objectstypically used by a workstation and a field controllerdevice, including BACnet alarm, scheduling, trend, andevent services.

MS/TP FC BusThe BACnet Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) FieldController (FC) Bus is a standard peer-to-peer,multiple-master protocol in which each master devicetakes turns originating messages to pass to any deviceon the bus. Via the MS/TP FC Bus, NIEx9s cancommunicate with theMetasys Field Equipment Controller(FEC) family of controllers, including FEC16 and FEC26field equipment controllers; Advanced Application FieldEquipment Controllers (FACs); VMA16 and VMA1832Variable Air Volume controllers; and IOM17, IOM27,IOM37, and IOM47 input/output control modules. NIEx9scan also communicate over the FC Bus with TEC26xxSeries thermostat controllers and third-party MS/TPdevices that comply with the BACnet standard protocolbased on ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-2004.

N2 BusThe N2 Bus is an open Johnson Controls® fieldcommunications trunk that links Application-SpecificControllers (ASCs) and programmable controllers to asupervisory controller. ASCs include Air Handling Units(AHUs), Unitary Controllers (UNTs), VAV controllers, andVAV Modular Assemblies (VMAs). Programmablecontrollers include the DX9100. The N2 Bus supportsMetasys system compatible devices from othermanufacturers and the Metasys Integrator® system.

LONWORKS BusSpecified NIEx9models can supervise LONWORKS devicesif the network interface follows current LONMARK®guidelines and uses the Free Topology Transceiver(FTT10). The LONWORKS network interface in specifiedNIEx9 models supports all current LONMARK certifieddevices, including Johnson Controls devices such as:

• LN Series Controllers• NexSys® controller line• LONWORKS enabled programmable Flexible System

Controller (FSC).

ModbusModbus is one of the most common Master-Slavecommunication protocols used in the industry. It is openlypublished and royalty-free, making it relatively easy todeploy as an industrial network. Modbus transmits rawbits or words, placing few restrictions on vendors. NIEx9supports both Modbus RTU (RS-485, RS-232) andModbus TCP/IP connectivity. Depending on the protocol,a converter may be required to connect the NIEx9 to aModbus network.

M-BusM-Bus (Meter Bus) is a European standard (EN 1434-3)that applies to heat meters. Heat meters measure theheat absorbed or released by an energy-conveying liquidin a heat-exchange circuit. An M-Bus level converter, such as an RS232-to-M-Bus converter, is required toconnect the NIEx9 to an M-Bus network. For connectionto the Ethernet network, an M-Bus-to-IP level converteris required.

KNX BusKNX Bus is used to control lighting, blinds and shutters, heating, and attendance systems. KNX (KONNEX) wascreated from the EIB (European Installation Bus),BatiBUS, and EHS (European Home System) protocols.A KNX IP Gateway is required to connect the NIEx9 to aKNX network.

Third-Party ProtocolsNIEx9 can supervise different networks that use otherstandards or proprietary protocols. The flexibility of theplatform allows the integration of devices on both serial(RS-232, RS-485) and TCP/IP levels.

Dual Trunk SupportYou can commission an NIEx9 to monitor and controltwo Modbus, two M-Bus, or one Modbus and one M-Busprotocol integrations. This capability reduces the numberof required NIEx9 engines and provides greater flexibilitywhen integrating different equipment. Table 1 illustratesthe different dual trunk combinations supported for eachengine. Some integrations use a protocol converter as arequired accessory. For details, see .
