FROM THE EDITOR Our main topic in this issue is the Lent activities planned leading up to Easter. Check the dates and the speakers and try to attend as many of the meetings as possible. They were all very interesting and entertaining last year. See Pages 6,7, 8 and 9. We are obliged by C of E rules to renew the Electoral Roll this year. See Page 15. Now, I am making an appeal for our advertisers who support our church that we should, wherever possible, support them. We have 17 advertisers, many of whom have been with us for a few years and they bring in over £500 per year to the church funds. So please, if you need a gardener or a cleaner or some DIY material, try these first and let them know you are from the church. Thank you Peter Chadwick, Magazine Editor

Coffee Morning Plus on the first Saturday every month

10am to 2pm While out shopping on the first Saturday in every month, pop in to St Peter’s for refreshments and a chat. Bring your friends and family. Its cheap and cheerful and very casual. We always have a cake stall with some delicious home made confectionary, and we usually have a bookstall outside, weather permitting.

The next ones: Sat 4 February and Sat 4 March

" he said.

SAVE THE DATE: Sunday 12 February 2017 4pm

We will be one church to share our story of the success of the pop up shop in the Packhorse Centre in September at the Celebration.

Lent Our popular series of Lent talks will continue this year with some very good speakers. They will be on Wednesdays at 3pm at Church, and then at 5:30pm at the University. See page opposite.

March 8, Ashley Jackson (local artist) - Painting in the Great Cathedral of the open air.

March 15, Jeffrey John (Dean of St Alban ’s Cathedral) - Making Sense of Jesus’ Miracles.

March 22, John Pritchard (ex Bishop of Oxford) - Education today: filling a bucket or lighting a fire?

March 29, Bishop Nick - Working with the media: playing with fire?

April 5, Rev’d Katy Cuncliffe – Singing and the Soul: why going to the football is better than going to church.

Please take some fliers when they are available and spread around widely. Invite your friends and neighbours. Each talk will finish with a time for questions and debate. Simon C for more details.

Compline with the monks in Mirfield on Thursdays during Lent at 9:15pm. Speak with Simon C if you wish to come, he can organise transport.

So that's: March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. April 6, 13

Fr George Guiver CR - one of the monks writes: "Prayer needs to be understood less as a personal quest for support, and more as a soul-body participation in a great and entrancing Mystery which is part of the daily life of the whole Church on earth and in heaven, and a living of its forward-flowing tradition, populated by a multitude of people and saints, the Scriptures, truths, dramas, discoveries, visions, books, poets, music, sacrifices, acts of selfless service; an unfinished symphony which simply requires us to pick our instrument and join in."

Yorkshire Christian Joke

Its Boxing Day and a vicar is sitting next to a man on the Leeds to

Huddersfield train who has clearly enjoyed more than his share of Christmas drink.

Much to the vicar’s annoyance, he insists on talking drunkenly and incessantly.

“Please don’t speak to me” snaps the vicar “your

drunk.”

“Ah’m drunk?” retorts the chap. “Tha’s worse than me - tha’s got tha collar on back to front.”

Moses was leading his people through the desert for 40 years. It

seems, even in Biblical times men avoided asking the way.

Take two tablets

RENEWAL OF ELECTORAL ROLL Every six years in accordance with Church of England rules, we are obliged to renew our Electoral Roll (ER). Therefore all you good people who are already on our ER and who wish to remain on it will be required to complete another application form. We will be sending you a letter towards the end of February with a partially filled in form for you to sign and return to us. This would be a good time for anyone who is not already on the ER to consider joining us. Why? You may ask. Well you will be able to vote at the AGM where church officials are appointed, you could even be on the PCC. You would also be on the list to receive Pastoral Care where a member of our Pastoral Care Group will personally look out for you and help you if ever you need it, eg if you are ill your Pastoral Carer can arrange visits to your home or hospital by the vicar. There will be blank forms available, just ask any church official. Peter Chadwick Electoral Roll Officer

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES After the fund raising meeting we have now firmed up some dates for so-cial events and fundraising events. Please put these in your diaries and try to join in. APRIL: Following last year ’s successful Cafe Entertainment and Bake Off, this event will again take place on the Friday 28th April 2017. Bakers plan your cakes and entertainers think of “turns” you might do. MAY: The Spring Fayre will take place on Saturday 20th May 2017. We plan to sell books, bric-a-brac, plants, and have a tombola and raffle. Any contributions to these stalls would be greatly appreciated, please bring them to church labelled for the fayre. We will also need lots of help on the day, if you are able to do so. JUNE: We are in the ear ly stages of planning a big summer event. This will take place on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd June 2017. Although this is at the early planning stages there will be lots to do, so again put it in your diaries to keep clear if possible. It coincides with our usual Coffee Morning which will take place alongside. We are hoping this will be a big “Presence Event” to further raise our town centre profile. More details will follow as planning all comes together. Watch This Space. Mike Bembridge

Sharon Sargeant The picture shows Sharon at last year’s Spring Fayre. Sharon, who sadly passed away in January, held several roles in the church including being a Server, a Saturday Host and a Sidesperson. We shall all miss her cheery smile. RIP Sharon.

Flowers in Church

Barbara Nightingale has organised the flower rota for many years and has run this service virtually single handed on a week-to-week basis with expertise and dedication. She has decided to step down from this organisational duty and although she has still agreed to arrange flowers, this will not be on a weekly basis. St Peter’s is extremely grateful to Barbara for her commitment over the years in terms of time, effort and artistry. Thank you for decorating and blessing the church for so many years. Although I am willing to take

over the organisation of the flowers, Barbara and I can no longer continue to be the only arrangers on the rota. We are desperate for new flower arrangers, on an occasional or regular basis. Please let Jane know if you are interested. For those of you who don’t know, the flowers are funded solely by personal donations from members of the congregation, in memory of loved ones or in celebration of special events. Please contact Jane, or sign the list at the back of church, if you wish to donate to the flower fund. Flower dedications can appear in the weekly pew sheet if requested.

Sheila Brierley was honoured for her dedication to the Huddersfield Voices group when she was the recipient of a special presentation at the Huddersfield Voices’ Carol Concert to celebrate her 70-year membership of the choir.

Sandra Harling, vice president of the choir, praised her and said of the Voices: “It was founded in 1946 when the Methodist choirs from around Huddersfield got together to sing Handel’s Messiah at the end of the war.

“The name was changed to Huddersfield Voices a few years ago as it was felt that members of the public thought that it was a religious organisation when in fact the choir is ecumenical.”

Sheila’s son Alan was the conductor of the choir for many years.

Thank you Andy Hirst, at The Huddersfield Examiner for this article.

This Christmas as we heard about the vulnerable baby Jesus, about his dependence on others, about when he and his family became refugees as they fled persecution and escaped to Egypt; it was extraordinary to see so much love shown to those who needed it in our community. There were Christmas meals shared, food and drinks made for the homeless and hungry, furniture offered to those who needed it, and more. This is the Gospel being lived out within our church.

Prayer for growth

O God who alone brings growth to your Church, Send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning,

wisdom to our actions and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, commitment to you,

and in service to our local community, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
