Royal visit 2013

1

His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex visited De Montfort University on June 7 and spent the day chatting with staff, students and the Leicester community who turned out to meet him in the sunshine.

While Prince Edward came to Leicester to officially open the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre, he also spent time looking at the Square Mile project and opened the new office in the Chantry building.

On his walk up to Trinity House for high tea in the Vice Chancellor’s office, the Prince stopped to chat with people lining the streets, including 30 Year 6 pupils from Montrose Primary School who he also later met in the new Square Mile office.

While opening the Chantry, Prince Edward looked at the work the children had been doing during homework club which is run by Square Mile student volunteers to help children with Maths, Science and English after school.

After opening the office, Prince Edward was escorted to Fosse Neighbourhood Centre where many Square Mile projects and events take place.

Volunteers from the Stem Cell project, including Rik and Kas Basra from the Rik Basra Leukemia Foundation, were on hand to explain how they organised the most successful stem cell register event ever held at a UK university.

The Prince was then treated to a performance from young people taking part in the Moving Together accredited dance programme before going on to meet Square Mile residents in the Fosse IT suite being taught how to use social media by trained DMU students.

We were delighted to welcome HRH Prince Edward and introduce him to some of the students and staff at DMU who, through ground-breaking research and personal commitment to making a difference, are helping to improve people's lives on a local and global scale.

North Warwickshire and Hinckley College welcomes Prince Edward

Staff, students and governors at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College welcomed His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex to the college’s Creative Arts campus in Hinckley on Friday 7 June 2013. Prince Edward was greeted by Principal and Chief Executive Marion Plant OBE and Chair of Governors Tim Render before taking a tour of the £12.8m purpose built campus where he met students studying a range of subjects including Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Games Development, Interior Design, Pop Music and Fashion. Students put on a short performance for the Prince and the visit concluded with the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the visit and the presentation of a small gift. Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “It was a privilege to show Prince Edward around our campus and introduce him to our fantastic students and staff who spoke to him about their work. The visit was an amazing experience for us all.” Media student Zoe Walker, who presented the royal visitor with the gift from the college, said: “It was really exciting to meet Prince Edward, he was friendly and had a lot of time for all students. It was a real honour to have him at our Creative Arts College.” Joseph Langham who is studying Graphic Design said "It was really surreal meeting Prince Edward, I didn't expect him to be as interested in our work as he was. He gave each of us positive individual feedback about our final major projects and seemed really impressed by our work." Performing Arts student Ashley Powell said: "It's not something you expect to happen, performing to a Prince. It was a good opportunity to show our skills." Fellow Performing Arts student Daniel Hodges added: "It was surprising how down to earth and approachable he was. It was a once in a life time experience."

awesome Ninja moves in Tekken 6 – all in a bid to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. First Year student, Rhianne Murphy, chose the charity, and was impressed by how many students took part, with many still choosing to donate even if they couldn’t make it to the event. “As students on the Games Technology course, we all have a real passion for Gaming and understand the excitement videogames can bring to people’s lives,” says Rhianne. “SpecialEffect is dedicated to using technology to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities. Finding computer games they can play, or adapting games they can’t, is having a profoundly positive impact on their mental health and general wellbeing, so it was fantastic to be able to raise funds in this way to support them.” With friendly battles and tournaments taking place throughout the night on projector screens, using the Xbox 360, PlayStation and Wii, the 12-hour Gameathon raised a total of £137.00. “It was a brilliant night, everyone really got into the spirit of it and the atmosphere was amazing,” adds Games Technology tutor, Gin Rai. “We’re already looking forward to the next one and working out ways we can in-crease our total for the charity.” For more details about SpecialEffect, log on to www.specialeffect.org.uk

Confetti Games Technology students pitted their football, guitar, dance and street fighting skills against each other recently.…in a virtual world that is….and it was all for a good cause. Over 50 first and second year students took part in an all-night ‘Gameathon’ to raise money for SpecialEffect – a charity which is dedicated to helping all young people with disabilities to enjoy computer games. Paying a minimum donation to take part, the devoted gamers and four of their tutors arrived at Confetti’s gaming studios at 6pm, not leaving until 6am the next morning after 12 straight hours of skill and strategy with the consoles. Fuelled with fizzy drinks, pizza and adrenaline alone, the evening saw some serious shapes thrown during Dance Central, riffs to rival Slash in Rockband and
