types of networks you

can think of on the left

LAN or WAN?LAN

Local AreaNetwork

A network whichcovers a small

physical areasuch as a homeor business

WAN

Wide AreaNetworkA network whichcovers a largerphysical area

such as abusiness withmultiple sites

So! Go Back to the previous slide and now add on the right handside whether the networks you have listed are LANs or a WANs

Networked Compute r• A networked computer contains a

network card• The network card allows it to connect

to a network either: – Through an Ethernet cable or ... – Through Wi-Fi

• The operating system on the computeralso has software to manage itsconnection to the network

Back to Devices

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/networks-wans-and-lans 25/31

Switch• A switch is a device into which

Ethernet cables from individualcomputers are connected

– Each computer has their own Ethernetcable

• This means multiple computers cannow communicate with each otheracross a network

Modem / Router• A Modem (also known as a Router) is

an intelligent device which managesthe connection between a LAN and aWAN

• Only one router will normally berequired for a small LAN to connectto a WAN through the telephonesystem

Server• A server is a more powerful and

capable computer which is used tomanage a network

• Some servers do multiple jobswhereas other servers do specific jobssuch as managing

– Printing (Print Server) – Email – Websites (Web Server)

Wi-Fi• Wi-Fi is a technology used to connect

multiple devices to the internet throughradio waves

• These radio waves are produced by aWi-Fi router such as commonbroadband routers found in homes

• They have limited ranges• They are suitable for situations where

you need to move aroundBack to Communication

methods

Fibre-Optic Cable s• Fibre-Optic cables are made using

special glass fibre• Data is sent through these cables in the

form of light• It has a much higher bandwidth

(amount of data which can be sentthrough a connection)

• It is very expensive and used more forlong distance networks or where thereis a lot of data to transmit

Bluetooth• Bluetooth is a form of radio wave

transmission• Data is transmitted across very short

distances between small devices• Used for simple tasks like connecting

a headset to a mobile phone• Or connecting a wireless keyboard to

a computer

Ethernet Cabl e• Ethernet cables are standard network

cables used for connecting computersin a LAN

• Each ethernet cable from a computerwill be connected to a switch

• Ethernet cables do not have as muchbandwidth as fibre-optic cableshowever they are sufficient for normalusage
