DESCRIPTION

Although a large number of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients have undergone transplantation procedures with olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) in the Bejing Hospital, to our knowledge, no post-mortem neuropathologic analyses have been performed. We examined the post-mortem brain of two Italian patients affected by ALS who underwent cellular transplantation in Beijing with their consent. Our aim was to assess the events following the graft procedure to possibly support the rationale of the treatment strategy.

11. NEUROPATHOLOGY OF FETAL OLFACTORY ENSHEATHING CELLS TRANSPLANTATION IN ALS PATIENTS
What did we find ?
Persistence of quiescent cells within the delivery track
Ongoing inflammation and gliosis in the surroundings
Neither neurites nor myelin within the delivery track
No change in motor cortex and spinal cord
12. NEUROPATHOLOGY OF FETAL OLFACTORY ENSHEATHING CELLS TRANSPLANTATION IN ALS PATIENTS
What were we not able to do ?
Comparing the phenotype of transplanted cells before and after transplantation
Tracing the heterologous cells
Assessing the moving of transplanted cells towards pathological areas, as reported in animal models
13. NEUROPATHOLOGY OF FETAL OLFACTORY ENSHEATHING CELLS TRANSPLANTATION IN ALS PATIENTS
What the clinical history of the patients tell us ?
No adverse reaction after transplantation
No change of the course of illness

CONCLUSIONS
It was an opportunity to study the long-term fate of supposed neural precursor cell transplanted into the human brain.
