City/Country Schools’ Alliance Student Leaders’ ConferenceNeutral Bay Public School is proud of our relationship with Moree Public School as part of the membership of the City/Country Schools’ Alliance. Four of our Year 5 students participated this week in the 3-day City/Country Schools’ Alliance Student Leaders’ Conference held at the Collaroy Centre. Thank you to Mr Will Colebatch for supervising the students during the conference.

Schools SpectacularSchools Spectacular is an outstanding showcase of the talent in NSW public schools. In terms of size, scale and scope, Schools Spectacular is unequalled in the world with a 2700-strong choir, 2300 diverse dancers, an 80-piece symphony orchestra, a world-class stage band and a huge number of outstanding solo performers.

This year, our enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 Choir students have been practising hard and will participate in the Schools Spectacular. We wish them all the best for their performances on Friday 23 November and on Saturday 24 November where they will sing in the Matinee and Evening performances. Thank you to Mrs Emma Howells, Ms Liz Pagel, Ms Alison Taylor and Miss Ashleigh Lopez for organising and supervising our talented students at this wonderful event.

School FeesIt would be appreciated if all outstanding school fees could be paid promptly so that our office administrators can finalise accounts for the year. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

Head LiceWe have had some reports of students contracting head lice. It would be appreciated if you could check your child’s hair for nits/lice using the methods recommended from NSW Health. The link for information is:

HomerunnersCaptain: Yuma JMVP: Gabe CWe played very well against Neutral Bay 4. Both batting and fielding led to a victory 19-29 our way. I chose Gabe for VIP because he hit well.

StrikersCaptain: Oliviae D CMVP: Tiana FSadly Artarmon won 25-18 runs. Our team played poorly in the first few innings. In the last three innings we tried to get back on top, but we were 1 down for being able to tie. The reason I chose Tiana is because she tried her best and got a lot of home runs. I think we played our best. We should work on our catching

Double OutsCaptain: Annie ZMVP: Samuel CToday Neutral Bay 3 played against Cammeray 1. It was very close game and both teams were evenly matched. In the end Neutral Bay came on top and won 17-16. Cammeray was a good team and they were great at both batting and fielding. We were good at working at a team, but we should work on hitting the ball as hard as we can. The MVP was Samuel C because of his excellent hitting and fielding.

MVPsCaptain: Joel A-E MVP: Daniel BToday we played a great game against Neutral Bay 1 (Homerunners). We could improve our fielding and placement of the ball when hitting. In the end we lost 29-19.

StealersCaptain: Lucile TMVP: Samuel RWe played Neutral Bay 6. The score was 22-16 our way. It was a great match with plenty of homeruns. Our teams’ strength today was the positioning we had on the field. We should work on our teamwork.

SlidersCaptain: Bayley CMVP: Joe KToday we faced Neutral Bay 5. They won 22-16 but everyone had fun. I chose Joe as the MVP because he hit phenomenally on the field. Our team all enjoyed the game even though we had a break because someone started to get sick.

SRC ElectionStudent Representative Councils (SRCs) work to represent students’ interests and needs in various ways. Our students are currently in the process of electing the SRC that will be formed in 2019. So far this term, Year 5 students have been invited to nominate themselves for the SRC, make an election poster and write a one-minute speech to be delivered to Year 4 & 5 students later this term.

Next week, all nominated students will be buddied up with a Year 6 SRC representative during a lunchtime meeting where they will have the chance to review the election speeches together.

In addition, all speeches must be presented in front of Ms Carnegie and Miss Murray before a student is able to deliver their speech at the SRC Election.

The SRC Election will be held on Monday 3 December in front of an audience of Year 4 and Year 5 students in the hall. Speeches are delivered in random order and the use of a microphone is not permitted.

Audience members are given a form on which they make notes about each speaker. If a student has an exemption from attendance at school on this day, he or she is encouraged to submit the speech in advance or to prepare a short video to be screened on the day.

Following the speeches, students in Years 4 & 5 return to their classroom and vote for exactly 10 students on the ballot paper provided. All results will be announced at the Year 5 Presentation Day.

We look forward to supporting our Year 5 students, aspiring to be elected to SRC leadership roles in 2019, throughout this process.Genevieve Carnegie Deputy Principal (Rel.)

Year 2 was lucky enough to go the NSW Schoolhouse Museum of Education. Before entering the schoolroom, Year 2 students lined up in single-gender lines. Their hands were inspected for cleanliness before entering the schoolroom. Once inside, an oath to Queen and Country was recited. We sat on long-toms, original 1880s desks, and chanted tables, read from an original reader, learnt to write Copperplate using a slate and slate pencil, as well as with pen and ink. We had lots of fun Maypole dancing and playing marbles, looking through old school bags and discovering what students used to take to school, experimenting with jelly pads and examining photographs from the past. This old 1800s school even had the cane if students misbehaved.

This term, Kindergarten have enjoyed having Mr Wright and the tech experts visit our classroom each week. We have been busy learning about the different apps so that we can all become tech experts too.

We used Scratch Jr to create our own interactive stories. Coding is a new type of literacy. Just as writing helps us to organise our thinking and express our ideas, the same is true for coding.

We had fun using iMotion. We took a lot of photos and then made an object look like it’s moving quickly on its own.

We have made some beautiful artwork using Sketches School. The artist's toolbox helped us to create impressive sketches. Some of the tools that we experimented with are the pen brush, oil pastel, water colour and our favourite…. the smudge tool. Below are some of our masterpieces.

This term, Year 5 has been exploring poetry during our writing unit. Each week we focus on a different genre of poetry.

This week 5M has been studying the traditional Japanese art of Haiku poetry.

We learnt that the majority of Haikus are written about nature or animals and so we had a go at our own nature-inspired Haikus.

Last week, Year 4 went on an ‘Observatory Hill Environmental Education’ excursion as part of their ‘First Contact’ History unit. It was a one day excursion focusing on the first contacts between Gadigal Aboriginal people and European colonists. The students learnt about Barangaroo, an Aboriginal woman, and visited Barangaroo Point Park to learn about traditional Aboriginal culture. They also visited Parbury Ruins in Millers Point and The Rocks Discovery Museum in The Rocks to learn about European colonial settlement. Some of the other activities included were the weaving of bracelets and/or bookmarks from Lomandra grass, the sketching of Banksia Serrata plants, guessing the historical object and completing a ‘What’s the object?’ task in the Rocks Discovery Museum. Here’s 4D participating in the various activities!
