The State of the Union is a broad policy speech and Presi-dent Barack Obama gave a variety of proposals addressinga multitude of issues, both foreign and domestic, during hisaddress. The proposals that would have an immediate socialor economic impact include:

Free community college for two years:Obama notedthat 40 percent of American college students choose to at-tend community colleges and expressed a will to follow freecommunity college programs already in place in Chicago andTennessee.

Providing paid sick leave: According to the McGill Insti-tute for Health and Social Policy, 145 countries provide paidsick leave to their citizens. The United States is not amongthese nations. Obama called for a bill that would provideseven days of paid sick leave to every worker in America.

Fair pay for women: In 2011, the U.S. Department of Laborfound that women working full-time and year-round earned19 percent less than their male coworkers. In his address, thepresident spoke on the need for Congress to legislate the

closing of the gender wage gap.

A raise of the minimum wage:The federal minimumwage stands at $7.25 per hour, which comes to $15,080 peryear. For comparison, the poverty line, as dictated by theCensus Bureau, stands at $11,945 per year for a single person.Last January, Obama raised the minimum wage for federalemployees to $10.10 by executive order, but Congress has yetto act on the issue.
