“Berthe Morisot and the Impressionist Image of Women”

Berthe Morisot was a woman of extraordinary talents who carved a ca-reer for herself out of the male-dominated art world of 19th century Par-is. She was one of only a few women who exhibited with both the Paris Salon and the highly influential and innovative impressionists. Morisot’s art depicts the world of the bourgeoisie: their clothes, their lifestyle, their surroundings, and their relationships. Through her unusual talent, the modern viewer can see the essence of quotidian life for the rising middle class of 19th century Paris.

The Secret Chord: A Novel and Bible Study Of theh Life of King David of Israel and his Family

The author Alice Hoffman, in an interview in The Washington Post, wrote that Pulitzer Prizewinner Geraldine Brooks: “is a master at bringing the past alive, imbuing history with living, breathing characters who allow us to understand the very difficult task of being human.” In her new novel “The Secret Chord,” Brooks focuses on the legendary warrior King David and his family. The biblical story from 1000 BCE is one of courage and betrayal, of war and music, love and adultery, of prophetic judgment and God consciousness. At the end, we discover that humanity is much the same even though living “long ago, and far away.”This four-week discussion-study class will reflect on both the story and characters in Brook’s novel, and on the biblical record found in Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) which is its “back story.”

Participants should bring to class each week Geraldine Brook’s novel and a contemporary STUDY BIBLE such as The New Interpreter’s Study Bible: New Revised Standard Version Translation (NRSV). Other good NRSV study bibles are The New Oxford Annotated, and The Harper Collins. The New International Study Bible (the NIV) is another modern translation and also would be a useful text for class discussion.

Creative Writing: Getting Pen to Paper

Everyone knows a story when they see one. But, what is it? What makes a story into a story? Of equal importance, how does one create a story?

If you have a tale to write or just want to brush up on your writing skills, all you need is pen, paper, and a creative mindset; this class will teach you the rest!

Topics will include character development, believable word building, plot creation, the over and under use of the thesaurus, researching your story, and the different writing styles required for short stories, novel-las, and novels. Additional topics will be presented in class, based on individual participants’ interests and specific stories.

Your instructor, Daniel Birt, MMT, MT-BC, CMT, is a Shenandoah University alumnus with degrees in liberal arts, music therapy, psychol-ogy, and massage therapy. no less – would help lead to the chain of events from the 1750s-1770s that would exacerbate the tensions that exploded at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill.

After winning the war American leaders faced the equally daunting task of winning the peace. When Congress realized the need to overhaul the Articles of Confederation in 1786, many wanted to retain a weak cen-tral government, fearing future political and economic oppression. The ensuing fight over ratification and the Bill of Rights is as much a part of the story of the success of American democracy as the Revolutionary War itself.

Your instructor, Patrick Farris has taught numerous classes for the Cen-ter for Lifelong Learning here at Shenandoah University in the past few years. He is a professor of anthropology at Shepherd University and Lord Fairfax Community College.

The American Revolution, the Founders & the Constitution

If you love US history and want a fresh reminder about how it all be-gan, you belong in this class!

The most important war in American history is often the least under-stood. What actually caused British subjects to rebel against the crown- was it just over the cost of a cup of tea? Did the Americans win the war, or did the British lose it? How well did the states cooperate during the war, and could the new country actually have become three or more separate nations?

Which military event had the most significance on the outcome of the war? Why was George Washington almost replaced as commander of the Continental Line? And who really were the people behind the names – both famous and forgotten – from the era: Adams, Banneker, Henry, Howe, Franklin, Germain, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Mor-gan, North, Washington, Wheatly – and so many more?

We will explore the founding of the United States. From the first char-ters made by the English government the thirteen colonies inherited a long history of Anglo-Saxon democratic traditions married to a Norman sense of class division and monarchy. A population explosion in the 1740s and social unrest in Britain. Over representation,

White House: Influential First Ladies First ladies of the White House have often found themselves part of the story of the Presidency. This is true even if the president’s wife did not make it to the White House. In many cases, the first ladies have helped support policy and gain public support, but there have been some occasions when activities have been less helpful. As history shows, first ladies can even cast a dark shadow on the Presidency.

This five-week class taught thorough the Center for Lifelong Learning will cover several first ladies. We will look at the valuable contribu-tions made as first ladies and their influential charters to see whether

they helped or harmed the Presidency.

The first ladies of the White House: Martha Washington, Dolly Madison, Mary Todd Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ellen and Edith Wilson, Jacquine Kennedy, and Nancy Reagan.

Your instructor, Dr. Charles P. Lickson, is a Lecturer at both Shenandoah Univer-sity’s Center for Life Long Learning and at Shepherd University’s Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning Department. He is also former Adjunct Asso-ciate Professor of Political Science and Public Admin-istration at Shenandoah University where he taught

courses on Constitutional Law, Public Administration Ethics and the American Presidency.

Lickson also served for many years on the Adjunct Faculty at The U.S. Office of Personnel Management Staff Training Center in Shepherd-stown, WV. American Sign Language (ASL) Part II

There is so much more to signing than just learning the hand shapes and movements. American Sign Language is a visually perceived lan-guage based on a naturally evolved system of articulated hand gestures and their placement relative to the body, along with non-manual mark-ers such as facial expressions, head movements, shoulder raises, mouth morphemes, and movements of the body.

Ms. Day, will continue this class into Part II with more hands on non-manual markers, such as facial expression and body movement of the face, head, and shoulder. The same book “Learning American Sign Language”, second edition, Levels I & II, by Tom Humphries and Carol Padden will be a continuation for ASL Part II .

Your instructor, Donna Day, deaf herself, is experienced and certified in sign language. She designed this class for the local community to come together and learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL).

Digital Photography: Fundamentals for Beginners

Digital cameras offer many options for how to make a photograph, but many users rarely stray beyond the camera’s automatic modes and set-tle for results that don’t meet up to their expecta-

tions. This introductory class is for those who are interested in learning how to use their camera beyond automatic and program modes.

This four-week class will concentrate on the 5 essential camera set-tings that have the most impact on the look of a photograph: focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance.

In addition, participants will learn how to use camera feedback mech-anisms such as the image histogram and light meter to adjust image brightness for their next shot.

Participants will learn where, when, why, and how to adjust these settings using their own camera and will do practice exercises in each session to reinforce what they’ve learned. By the end of the class, participants will feel more empowered to make decisions about cam-era settings to achieve the look they seek in their photographs, and will have the fundamental photography knowledge to troubleshoot situations when results aren’t as expected. A final session will include photography practice at a nearby outdoor location.

Your instructor, Mary Louise Ravese, is founder and owner of Bella Vista Photography in Waterford, VA. She specializes in fine art nature and travel photography from locations around the world.

Ravese is an experienced photography instructor who has trained hundreds of amateur photographers. Her approachable demeanor and ability to explain technical concepts in a simple, understandable way makes her a popular instructor. (A $6 materials fee to be paid to instructor the first class).

Digital Photo Editing: Using Adobe Lightroom Organize, Edit and Share your Photographs

With digital photography, capturing the image with the camera is just the start. Photographers also must understand how to process their images for their intended use -whether that be to print photographs, create web pages and social media postings, create slide shows or even albums/books.

Adobe Lightroom is a leading software application designed to handle the full photography workflow from organizing images, to editing im-ages (a.k.a the digital darkroom), to sharing images by preparing them for print, slideshow, web page or book. Adobe Lightroom is suitable for beginner to advanced photographers. This introductory class is for those who are interested in learning the basics of how to organize and edit their images using Adobe Lightroom software.

These four-week sessions will concen-trate on the essentials of Adobe Lightroom’s main modules: Li-brary, Develop, and the output modules of Print, Web, Slideshow and Book. Participants

will learn how to organize their images so they can be easily found, how to optimize their images and edit photographs to remove unwanted objects, do minor portrait retouching, and to prepare their images for a variety of uses.

Using the university’s computer lab, participants can do hands-on exercises on the sample images provided, or supply their own images. By the end of the class, participants will feel confident using Adobe Lightroom to manage their images and do basic image editing on their own computer.

Let’s explore Winchester’s architectural treasures! Some are “behind the scenes” and others in plain sight. Winchester has an eclectic mix of archi-tectural styles, ranging from the Federal to the Beaux-Arts! Between these two styles, there are examples of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Victorian

Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Queen Anne, Classical Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival, Neo-classical, and Georgian Revival.

We’ll also explore such architectural details--ones we can easily over-look--as stained glass windows; wrought iron gates and fences; and stonework, brick work, windows, and doors. Your instructor, Karen Brill, currently delivers history, art, and architecture-themed tours at the request of local organizations. Among Karen’s favorite architec-tural treasures are the Federal-style homes on Potato Hill; The Gables, once owned by the W. H. Baker family; and the John Handley Public Library. Join Ms. Brill for an interesting and informative learning experience as she leads you in the exploration of Winchester’s architectural treasures!

Petticoat Spies of the Civil War: North and South

19th century was a time period in which women in America were treated as second class citizens, women had no voting rights, were not allowed to serve in the military services, and were generally viewed as “fragile creatures whose roles were best served in domestic duties.” Men dominated society and held to the view that a woman’s role was to care for children, cook, wash clothes, care for the house, and conduct any other tasks that were generally assigned to females.

Many men could not un-derstand why any sensible woman wanted to engage in warfare, much less join the military. The truth is that women were as patri-otic as any man and loved their country as much as any other citizen. Some women became involved in action because of all the publicity and excitement they read about in the newspapers.

Among the various adventures and escapes from boredom, spying was very attractive and advantageous for women. Spying became an easier method of serving their cause because women could use their talents and abilities and not have to disguise themselves in men’s clothing. The risks associated with spying could result in death.

Your instructor, Dr. Robert Meadows an avid American Civil War buff and historian who has over 600 books on this subject. Dr. Meadows has presented many talks to schools, historical associations, civic groups, Civil War Roundtables and Road Scholars.
