giving at the office. It’s a tradition that most of us are forced into. We go along to get along because you don’t want to be the Scrooge who doesn’t want to participate. If you are forced into participating, here are some ideas to make this awk-ward tradition a little less painful.

The classic office gift giving tradi-tion is of course, Secret Santa. Ev-eryone randomly draws the name of a co-worker who then becomes the person that you give a gift. There is normally a limit on the amount of the gift, so things don’t get out of control. In some cases, smaller, less expensive gifts are purchased and left with clues. When the big gift

exchange occurs people then try to guess the identity of their Secret Santa.

A tradition that is a more cut-throat is the White Elephant gift exchange. Each person buys a gift. When the gift exchange occurs, one person starts. The next person then picks, but has the option to take the previous person’s gift, thus forc-ing them to pick again. It’s kind of like “Let’s Make A Deal,” but on a smaller scale. One way to keep the atmosphere light and avoid hard feelings is the make sure the gifts are gag gifts.

For the studious office, there is the book gift exchange. Everyone offers their favorite book as a gift. The books can be given randomly

or in Secret Santa fashion. The in-teresting part of this tradition is to see what kind of literature your co-workers like.

Maintaining the theme idea, how about a coffee mug exchange? Most people drink coffee or tea at work. Coffee mugs come with practically anything printed on them. This is best used with an assigned recipi-ent. That way you can match the mug to the personality.

An altruistic approach would be a charity exchange. This means mak-ing a donation to someone’s favorite charity. This is the true meaning of the holidays.

To make sure they get what they want, you could do a gift card ex-change. Not a lot of surprises here,

but most folks like to shop. To keep it interesting, have everyone supply 3 places that they like to shop. Leave it up to the giver to decide from which place to buy the gift card.

What about no gifts and a potluck instead? Take the money you would normally spend on each other and put it toward a nice meat and cheese tray or a seafood platter. This is good way to take the pressure of gift giving off and just have a good time.

Remembering to buy gifts for your co-workers is just one more thing to do during the holiday sea-son. But if you make it fun and cre-ative, it might not be so bad.

becoming the victim of crime. With the hustle and bustle, there is always the potential for be-coming careless and making yourself a target. Here are some tips to keep your holiday shop-ping experiences safe.

Shop with a buddy. There is safety in numbers, so when possible, shop with others. If you must go alone, try to shop during daylight hours at busy, reputable places in good parts of town. If you must go alone at night, take extra precau-tions. Park as close to the store as possible, walk quickly to the entrance and don’t be afraid to ask for a staff member to escort you back to your car, especially if you are loaded down with bags.

Leave valuables at home. Carry only the cash and credit cards you will need for the trip—the more money you have, the more likely someone is to notice and target you. Consider using credit cards only. That way, should your credit cards get

stolen, you may report them lost and limit your liability. Whatever means you choose to pay for your purchases, stash it in a fanny pack. Purses and wallets are much easier to snatch than fanny packs.

Be alert. Walk like you have a purpose, with your fanny pack and bags close to your side. Look like you know where you are going and for-get making phone calls and texts. They can pose too much of a distraction. Keep an eye out for strangers and scams and report any suspicious activity you encounter.

Be car smart. Park in a well-lit lot and drop off your bags periodically to keep your load light. Store your packages out of sight, preferably in the trunk, and keep your car doors locked. Should you return to your car and suspect someone is watching you, move your car and report your suspicions. Before getting into your car, always check the back seat to ensure no one has broken in and is hiding out, waiting for you.

Holiday shopping can be a blast. But don’t let the excitement of the season and the thrill of the find supersede safety. Never let down your guard for a moment when shopping and always play it safe!

now, and while you have worked with almost every type of fabric imaginable, there is one that you have avoided at all costs-denim. The thought of trying to work with that heavy, cumbersome fabric worries you to no end. In the past, you have always substituted a fabric in place of denim, but with your recent proj-ect, you have no choice but to use denim. Relax...working with denim may be easier than you think.

Although it is known for its use in jeans, denim can be used to cre-ate almost any type of garment, in-cluding formalwear. It is extremely durable, and can be tinted, striped, brushed, napped and more. For ease in sewing, you should select

the right weight of denim for your project. Heavy denim works best for garments with straight lines, like jackets, jeans, overalls and work clothes. Medium-weight denim works best for garments that re-quire easing or gathering, like jack-ets, pants, skirts and accessories. Lightweight denim works best for all other garments, like dresses and shirts, and is the easiest to sew.

After selecting the right denim for your project, you need to prepare it and gather the supplies to work with it. Wash and dry the denim several times to reduce shrinking, and serge or zigzag the edges to reduce ravel-ing. As for supplies, you will need a quality denim needle. It has a longer, sharper point than standard needles and can penetrate the tight weave of

the cloth better. Make sure you buy the appropriate size for the weight of denim you intend to sew and use polyester or cotton-wrapped poly-ester thread. For topstitching, you may use decorative thread, and for closures, decorative snaps and zip-pers are the most popular.

You can sew denim as you would any other fabric, but keep in mind that it will fray, so finishing the seams is important. Do a test seam to determine stitch size. Heavi-er weight denim will need fewer stitches per inch, about 10, while lighter denim will need 12. To fin-ish seams cleanly, you may run a straight stitch along the raw edge and trim with pinking shears, zig-zag the seam allowance edge or sew the raw edges as you go. For a trade-

mark look, you may want to top stitch the item with heavy con-trasting thread.

Once you have completed your denim project, you should care for it properly. If possible, wash it separately in the washer until no more fading occurs. To prevent future fading, turn the item inside out and add a cup of white vinegar to the wash or have the item dry cleaned.

Sewing with a heavier fabric like denim will take some getting used to, so be sure to cut yourself some slack. Start with small projects and work your way up to bigger and better things. By then, you’ll have the confidence, knowledge and skills to tackle whatever den-im projects come your way.
