Every time a fairy sings my heart stops. Its like nothing youve ever heard,

yet you know for sure that it is a fairy making that echoic ethereal sound. Athousand harps couldnt compare. A fairy sings to announce someones

death. You never know who or when. Some say that if you listen close

enough you can hear a story, but thats only something people say.

I found him sitting by the lake he had a small rock on his hand. !he song

had "nally stopped, leaving a sad silence in the air that was almost tangible.

#ot all fairies songs are sad, but this one felt particularly sad. It seemed to

have put the whole town in a trance.

$%ey&' he said, I could never sneak up on him. %e always knew I was near.

$%ey' I sat down ne(t to him, he twirled the rock with his "ngers. I thought I

saw it sparkle for a second, it sparkled at his touch. %e was enchanting it for

    something.

$)id you hear*' I asked, not daring to look at his face.

$Yes. I saw her too' that made me look at him, $She was crying, Id never

seen one shed a tear while singing'

!here was nothing I could say to that. Ive only seen a couple of fairies singin my + years of life and Ive never seen one cry. Signing was something

that came naturally to them when they knew that someones death was

    near.

-e left the lake and walked through the forest before it got darker. )uncan

was a tall guy, with a slim torso but strong arms, I was never afraid when I

was with him. -e didnt speak. I could already hear the nocturnal creatures

starting to roam through the forest. I could see small, golden eyes in the

dark. nly hunters and guardians were allowed to stay in the forest at night.

)uncans dad was a hunter and my father and brother were both guardians.

As soon as )uncan turned +/ he would become a hunter too. And I could

choose between being a 0uratium, those who cure with magic, a 0onscienta,

those who study the creatures and magic or a #ektaria those who create the

most powerful potions. 1y mother was one of the best healers and she had

been teaching me healing magic since I was a kid, but I was never good at it.

I liked potions, and I was good at it, but nobody knew that, e(cept for

)uncan, he knew everything about me.

)uncan walked me home, we said goodbye and promised to see each othertomorrow at the lake for lunch.

I was walking through the forest and couldnt help but fall back on my butt. I

was terri"ed for what Id done and I was being attacked, then I felt a searing

pain ran through my arm. Id never felt such pain before. I was going to die. I

only caught a glimpse of my attacker and I was falling&

I was in the forest again, and my arm didnt hurt anymore, because it wasnt

my arm and I hadnt been attacked. I could never know when my visions

would happen and up until now I had kept them a secret, only )uncan knewabout them. 2ut this one, I dont think I would have been able to hide had I

been on public. I was terri"ed and I really thought I was going to die.

%aving vision was something that only manifested in a few witches but it was

something you had to hide, it was a belief that those who had visions were

involved with dark magic, which I knew wasnt true. 2ut I couldnt risk it, for

    my familys sake.

I got to the lake, still thinking about the vision. I hadnt known who it was,

that person could be in real danger and there was no way I could help.)uncan never showed.

n my way back home I was so lost in thought that I 3umped when

something small hit me in the head, it was a berry. I looked up and found a

pi(y laughing, her pointy ears and mischievous laugh annoyed me and I

yelled at her, she was so o4ended that she stumped her little feet on the

branch she was standing and 5ew away mumbling something. I normally

didnt mind pi(ies, but the vision still bugged me. )uncan always showed up

and if not he found a way of letting me know he wasnt coming, not this time

    though.

I got home and found mom making some tea. I was about to sit down at the

dinner table when time seemed to slow down, someone opened the door and

men came through, three of them were carrying #ico, )uncans older

brother. 1y mother immediately 3umped into healer mode, cleared the table

so #ico could lay there, he was muddy and there was blood all over him,

specially his arm. !ime speeded up again when )uncan walked through the

door, face white as a sheet.

I tried to help but honestly it was better if I 3ust stayed out of the way. At the

end I 3ust sat ne(t to )uncan while he tried not to fall asleep. -e could see

#ico from the couch he was in my bedroom with the door open, bandages

all over his body, pink spots on them.

$!hey wont tell me what attacked him' )uncan said, his voice a whisper.

$1aybe they dont know' I said, remembering my vision, it had been #ico

and he didnt know what it was either.

$-hat do you mean*' he said, and this time he turned to look at my face,

the light was dim but I was sure he could read me perfectly. $-hat is it*'

    I let out a sigh, $I had a vision'

I told him everything I felt and all I had seen, which hadnt been much,

wings, "re and e(treme pain. I could feel him worry even more about his

brother but I could see something else in his eyes, something like a purpose.

%e wanted to "nd out the truth.

-e fell asleep on the couch, but when I woke up I looked up and saw #icos

shadow. %e was awake and looking at us 6 at me. %e tilted his head a little.

0ome, he seemed to say. I looked over at )uncan, he was breathing so

calmly. I stood up as 7uietly as I could and walked over to my room, #ico

    smiled a little.

$0ould you open the window for me please*' he asked in a small voice.

I nodded and opened the window, letting the cool bree8e in. I didnt dare to

turn around 3ust yet. #ico always made me feel a little uncomfortable, like he

was watching every movement I made, trying to "gure me out. I never knew

    how to act around him.

    $!hank you' he said.

I turned around, $#o problem' I said. #ico reminded me so much of )uncan

sometimes. 2ut their eyes were di4erent. #icos eyes seemed to have seen a

lot more darker things and he always had a sneer. 2eing a hunter could do

that to you. #ot now though, right now he seemed to be in a good mood.

$Are you feeling better*' I asked when he lowered his eyes.

$I, yeah, I guess. !hat tea your mom makes is really good'

I walked over to the night table and smelled the pot. I remember that smell,

just a cup of this and it will knock you on your ass, my mom had said. It was

used for e(cruciating pain, it had a numbing e4ect.

$Yeah, she is good' I agreed.

$Im sure youll be 3ust as good when you become a healer' he said.

I smiled shyly, $I dont know about that'

-e stayed up talking all night. It felt like he had completely forgotten about

what had happened and 3ust wanted to talk to someone. -e talked about

everything and anything. 2ut it only lasted for whatever we had left before

the sun came up. It felt like a spell, and it was clear to both of us that it was

over when we heard noise in the kitchen.

I walked out to "nd my mother making co4ee for the hunters who were

already there to see if #ico was feeling better. )uncan was outside. I couldnt

"nd my place in the situation. I couldnt really help with healing and I didnt

know how to make )uncan feel better.
