Introduction

The Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation was established in 2001 by Swiss-born Canadian filmmaker, Bernard Weber,

“to contribute to the protection of the world’s human-built and natural heritage and to foster respect for our planet’s diversity”

1st: TAJ MAHAL • The Taj Mahal in India was built by a grief-

stricken emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631 while giving birth to their 14th child.

• Taj Mahal means “crown of

palaces”

• The Taj Mahal stands at 561

feet tall

• The colour of Taj Mahal appears to change depending on the time of day. The colour change also depends on whether there is moonlight at night.

• The cost to build the Taj Mahal was about 35 million rupees, which would be about 1 million American dollars.

3rd: COLOSSEUM OF ROME

• The Colosseum is an amphitheatre in the centre of the city Rome, Italy & is the largest amphitheatre in the world

• It got the name Colosseum because of a statue that was located alongside the amphitheatre called “the colossus of Nero”

• Romans had the earliest form of a Sky dome. If it rained they stretched a red canvas over the entire Colosseum.

• After the Colosseum was partially destroyed by the earthquake, some of the fallen pieces were used to build St Peter's Basilica.

• Chichen Itza was a large city built by the Maya people

5th: MACHU PICCHU• Machu Picchu is an Inca site in Peru that is

thought to have been built as an estate for Pachacuti, an Incan emperor

• It is located on the eastern Andes mountain slopes in a tropical mountain forest

• It was named as Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981, and two years later, in 1983UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage Site

• Across the historical northern borders of China is a wall built of stone, wood, earth and other materials to protect the Chinese Empire from invasion.
