    NEW! After School Art Classes For Kids, Beginning Jan. 12, 2010

    Five-class series explores art techniques using recyclable materials

    SARATOGA, Calif. As part of Montalvos recently announced expanded education programming, sign-upsare now available for the first After School Artseries, Casting About With Paper and Plastic with artistCorinne Okada Takara. Students, ages 7 through 11, will explore the sculptural fiber art techniquesincorporating recycled materials to create a variety of projects.

    Classes are held on Tuesdays at Montalvos Barn Art Studio from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Class dates are: Jan. 12,19, 26, Feb. 2, and 9. Parents can sign their children up through Montalvos Box Office.

    During this series, children will playfully incorporate recycled materials such as plastic sushi grass, local ethnicfood wrappers and produce netting, making colorful handmade papers for a variety of 3D and 2D projects.Participants will use wire and recycled packaging as supports for their paper creations of insects, flowers and

    cast wall hangings. Each student will also learn to make vibrant prints using collograph printmaking techniquesTakara will share the inspiration of her Japanese-Hawaiian plantation roots and will encourage the students toexplore their own visual vocabularies through the discards of their daily lives.

    About the instructorCorinne Okada Takara is a Bay Area artist and arts educator. Her mixed media work has shown locally andinternationally. Most recently Takara participated in an Arts In Embassies exhibit in Brussels and was honoredwith an artist residency at the de Young Museum.

    After School Artis a new program for Montalvo and Casting About With Paper and Plastic is the first in a seriesof classes being offered to children throughout the school year. The next After School Art, Aqua Extravaganzawith Ken Hay, begins on Feb. 23, 2010. For more information on all of the classes being offered visit
