Movember is the time of the year when men around the world commit to bring back the moustache, have fun for a serious cause; raise awareness and encourage fund raising for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health research. The moustache is a symbol that encourages conversations and awareness for men’s health, physical inactivity and suicide prevention.
Women can also join as Mo-sista’s and MOVE, fundraising while getting more active.
All Mo-Bro’s and Mo-Sista’s, friends, family, colleagues and community members can have fun and raise awareness regarding men’s health at the following events: Rotary Lift the Lid on Mental
Illness, 30 October from 6.00pm Oberon RSL, entry by gold coin
Pies & Beer, 11 November, 6.00pm Oberon Rugby League Club, entry $5 A doctor from the Oberon Medical Centre will talk about Men’s Health
Moberon Lunch, 30 November from 12.00pm Oberon Robert (Bob) Hooper Community Centre, entry $10. Special guest speakers include Kerry Peck and Prostrate NSW
Rotary Men’s Health Education Rural Van, 2-3 December in Oberon Street (outside Council), Free men’s health checks
The Man Walk, every Sunday 4.00pm at the Recreation Ground
For bookings contact the Community Services Team at Oberon Council on 6329 8100 This year Oberon has challenged Molong. Join the Oberon team and help by growing the best Mo, or Moving the most, to fundraise the Most for Men’s Health. Remember, it’s important to get educated, learn the symptoms, get regular check ups from your doctor, if caught early, survival rates are high. Talking about mental health is serious and it is OK to admit when we need help. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 100% confidential and your call is free 13 11 14. Physical inactivity has become a health problem. Remaining active decreases our chances of health issues occurring. So it’s time to put the MOVE in MOVEmber. The Movember foundation has a 30 day challenge to get you moving every single day. Take action, do something to get the word out, start conversations, groom your moustache, get active and help encouraging people to join. Become an Mo-Bro or Mo-Sista by going to https://moteam.co/oberon or just come along and enjoy the activities offered.

On March 7/8 2020 is coming to Oberon. A few weeks ago the Spartan Race was launched in Oberon at the Oberon Common. Council has signed an agreement to bring the race to Oberon for the next three years 2020-22. So who are Spartan and what is this phenomenon about? The first obstacle race was run in the mountains of Vermont USA by Joe DeSena. The concept has since grown to more than one hundred and thirty races around the world annually consisting of three core challenges - The Spartan Sprint, The Spartan Super and The Spartan Beast. Courses are riddled with signature obstacles such as mud, barbed wire, walls and climbing ropes. Spartan also offers kids races, 2km in distance, with an emphasis on teamwork, fun and getting muddy. For beginners the sprint is recommended with the shortest course just 5kms with twenty plus obstacles. The hardest of the three races is the Beast run over 21kms with over forty obstacles. Participants can run as individuals or as part of a team. Spartan is bringing the 5km Sprint and 21 km Beast races to Oberon. Each challenge can be built upon to push the athletes further. The Spartan Crew are very experienced in setting up the course and the festival site, bringing all the structures on site for assembling and deconstructing after the event finishes. It is hoped that local participation in the races will be high, already many are in
training. The Kids Race sounds like a lot of fun and I am sure will be well supported. The course located off Abercrombie Road is spectacular with stunning views over Oberon Dam and featuring tailor made trails to ensure a challenging experience. What Spartan means for Oberon – over five thousand visitors are expected over the two day event. This presents both challenges and opportunities for the community. It is hoped that the businesses in town will really come on board, and to assist with this Council Tourism Manager Mat Webb will be engaging with local service suppliers and accommodation providers to ensure the maximum community benefit is realised from this event. Please reach out to Mat at the Oberon Visitors Information Centre for any further information on how to get involved. I am sure the Oberon Community will extend their usual warm welcome to all visitors over the weekend. This is a perfect opportunity to showcase the Oberon District and what we have to offer. Every visitor is a potential resident So I invite as many as possible to support the world’s #1 Obstacle Course Race, maybe as a participant where you'll find yourself climbing, crawling, jumping, and swinging over, under, and through some of the best obstacles in the world! Or you may find you want to offer accommodation, experiences or services to the participants and their families. An opportunity not to missed on many levels. There is a plethora of information about Spartan and the Oberon Race on the Spartan Facebook Page.

Distance decals at the Common
If you walk around The Common you will notice a new addition to the pavement in the form of stick-on decals. These decals indicate the distance walked and the kilojoules burned in the process. The course is 1km in increments of 200 metres beginning at the toilet block, progressing up past the pond and carpark, along Curtis and down Dudley Street, back to the start. Now the weather is warming up it is a good
time to get out for a walk and use the static
exercise equipment in the pleasant
surrounds of The Common.

WEED MANAGEMENT
Weeds can be a burden for farmers. They add pressure to pastures and ground-cover on farms. This is made worse by drought. We are calling for farmers within the Oberon Local Government Area who need assistance with weed spraying or who are local contractors who provide this service, as part of Council's drought assistance. Direct your inquiries to Lynette Safranek, Oberon Council Corporate Services Director on (02) 6329 8123 or mobile 0418 269 921.

Oberon District Museum News There has been a lot of exciting activity at the museum over recent weeks. The September Annual General Meeting was well attended and supported a proposed change of direction so that the museum’s focus will be on steam and horse drawn equipment in outside displays. As well as refreshing existing displays inside the pavilions and the cottage, the committee hopes to add material on the history of the timber industry in Oberon.
Two recent grants of money have been enormously helpful – one, from Create NSW, enabled the installation of a glass protective barrier around the 1930s streetscape, and the other, from the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal, will pay for the erection of two sheds to provide much needed shelter for outside equipment. The museum’s partnership with a U3A Heritage Machinery Restoration group, now led by Tim Arnison, has seen a number of items transformed, like the super spreader in the photo. The U3A members involved in this activity are very keen and all report that they find this work particularly rewarding. A win / win for both the workers and for the museum! For more information about the museum ring the secretary, Pam Dellow, on 0418 671 754, email

Relocating plants from one spot to another If moving to an existing garden, observe over a year what treasures turn up, and where the sun is each
season. If keeping plants in pots over winter, do not over-water. Choose a shady protected spot, and surround pots with insulating mulch to reduce freezing. When planting a shrub or tree, ensure that the hole is square or rectangular, so that roots are encouraged to move outwards from the new hole. Put some bland manure like alpaca or sheep in the hole, not strong fresh manure from chooks or cattle. Sink a bottomless plastic bottle upside down at the edge of the hole to simplify watering. Mulch! Relocate deciduous shrubs or trees in winter .Relocate evergreens in mid Spring when the chance of frost is low. Water as required.

Grant provides useful equipment Armchair Travel is one of
Oberon U3A's most popular activities, drawing a regular crowd of between 20 and 30 "travellers" to all sorts of places. Last term we took a camping trip up the centre of Australia to Darwin and back, with Alan and Rhondda Pearce, and then we toured Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and parts of Russia with Hamish and Janet Gidley-Baird. Oberon U3A this year received a great boost to its resources with a grant of funds from the Veolia Mulwaree trust to purchase a data projector and motorised screen for activities such as this. Previously U3A had to borrow this equipment which sometimes proved tricky particularly if it was needed elsewhere. The grant from Veolia Mulwaree has given the group more independence in this regard, and its members are very grateful. In Term 4 Armchair Travel will venture into Central Europe with Brian and Kathy Beesley, and then we'll take a bike ride along the Loire Valley in France with Jenn Capel. The motorised screen has been installed so travellers will be in for a very professional experience - no passports required! For more information about Oberon U3A ring the Secretary, Maree Arrow 6336 3003 or visit our website at http://oberon.u3anet.org.au
