The ministry of SHC is funded entirely by the generous giving of God’s people. You will notice that we do not pass the offering plate; however, there are offering boxes in the back of the auditorium. We believe from the Word of God that the Spirit of God will lead people towards giving back to God of their first fruits. “...God loves a cheerful giver,” (2 Cor. 9:7). Please prayerfully consider what the Lord would have you do.

THE WORD ON DISPLAY

SERIES Part 5

“Restored by the Word” Luke 8:40-56

Presented by

Pastor Justin Greene

October 18, 2015

Jane Merchant offers hope to all who fear they

cannot commit themselves to God’s work and

succeed. Jane never attended school, unless

children’s Sunday school at the church counts. At two

years of age she was confined to a wheelchair. By

twelve she was bedfast with brittle bones that broke

whenever she was moved. At twenty-three she

became deaf. Then she developed an eye disorder

that required daily treatment.

While her brothers and sisters were at school, Jane

taught herself. At age five she could read. Her father

often took her driving over the green, lush countryside,

where Jane was all eyes. A local librarian noted

Page 6: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

Jane’s incessant reading and proclaimed her “the

best educated personal I know.” One day, Jane read

in a magazine of a poetry contest. She worked and

reworked poems she had been writing. Finally, she

submitted them. Back came news she had won a

cash prize for honorable mention. She began to write

in earnest, submitting poems to any magazine she

could find that published poetry: Good

Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, and such.

Eventually, Jane published over a thousand poems

and won many national prizes. Then two books of her

poetry were published. Her editors did not know this

lovely nature poetry came from the pen of a young

lady who was stretched out on her back in bed,

unable to move for fear of breaking bones and

unable to hear the beautiful sounds she poetically

described. Asked why she kept on when all was

against her, Jane answered, “Faith in God kept me

going.”1

Experience

What happened today?

The newsmen tell

The tidings so:

A government fell.

A statesman was killed,

An airplane crashed,

A City cowered,

Hurricane lashed.

Page 7: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

But here upon

This quiet street

An old, old lady

Grave and sweet,

Handed a rose

To a crying child,

And sunlight sparkled

As they smiled.

I must believe

The clamorous, raw

News: but the smile

Is what I saw.

In the 96 pages of Jane Merchant’s Think about These

Things poems, she wrote a prayer at the bottom of

each page. On page 19 at the end of Experience she

wrote: “Lord, we would not close our eyes to wrong or

be selfishly at peace while others are beset by

disaster. Let not our hearts grow callous we beseech

thee, to news of suffering in any place. May we be

ever responsive to need, seeking ways in which we

can help. But, Lord in a world where bad news travels

faster than good, let us never forget that gentleness

and kindness are also true. In Christ’s name. AMEN.”

By Ruth Shaw, age 92.

THE BIG PICTURE

Luke groups four miracles together:

• All were untouchable or unreachable.

• All were “known” only by Jesus.

• All were hopeless.

• All are examples of providence.

Key: God can reach you no matter the state of your faith.

Page 9: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

BRAIDED TOGETHER

What ties these two lives together?

• Their condition had a “time stamp.”

 Because of this:

 One: Would never get married

Would never have a family

Would never see adulthood

One: Would have lost her marriage

Would have lost her relationships

Would have lost her spiritual connection

Page 10: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

• They were women.

 In Jesus’ day, women:

Were not allowed to testify in court

Were not allowed to engage in business

Were not allowed to leave home without permission

Were not taught to read Scripture

Were not allowed to participate in public prayer!

Page 11: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

• Their situation was inconvenient.

A crowd filled with need was pressing around Jesus.

The daughter was a great distance away.

The woman was a time waster.

Page 12: New Bulletin October 18, 2015

• They received personal attention.

His response in both situations: “I see you, and I know

what you need!”

Key: God’s love is personal!

THE WRAP

• What is the state of your faith?

• How have you responded to the personal touch of God?
