New Castle PresbyteryDiscerning Transitions

The "Flying Trapeze" essay by Danaan Parry’s Warrior of the Heart

has special meaning for me. My daughter introduced me to it

when she was preparing to leave for Senegal to serve in the

Peace Corps in 2000. I have used it over the years as transitions

faced me in my work both in the secular and religious

areas. Although it does not mention God or Jesus or the Holy Spirit

by name, the underlying support can only be all three working in

and through the person during his/her

transitions.

May the message in the following essay help

us as we discern our transitions with Ignite,

Missional Presbyter, Connectional Presbyter

and the future of New Castle Presbytery.

Sometimes, I feel that my life is a series of trapeze swings. I’m either hanging on to a trapeze bar

swinging along or, for a few moments, I’m hurdling across space between the trapeze bars.

Mostly, I spend my time hanging on for dear life to the trapeze bar of the moment. It carries me

along a certain steady rate of swing and I have the feeling that I’m in control. I know most of the

right questions, and even some of the right answers. But once in a while, as I’m merrily, or not so

merrily, swinging along, I look ahead of me into the distance, and what do I see? I see another

trapeze bar looking at me. It’s empty. And I know, in that place in me that knows, that this new bar

has my name on it. It is my next step, my growth, my aliveness coming to get me. In my heart of

hearts I know that for me to grow, I must release my grip on the present well-known bar to move to

the new one.

Each time it happens, I hope – no, I pray – that I won’t have

to grab the new one. But in my knowing place, I know that I

must totally release my grasp

on my old bar, and for some moments in time I must hurtle

across space before I can grab the new bar. Each time I do

this I am filled with terror. It doesn’t matter that in all my

previous hurdles I have always made it. Each time I am afraid I

will miss, that I will be crushed on unseen rocks in the bottomless

basin between the bars. But I do it anyway. I must. Perhaps this

is the essence of what the mystics call faith. No guarantees, no

net, no insurance, but we do it anyway because hanging on to

that old bar is no longer an option.

And so, for what seems to be an eternity but actually lasts a microsecond. I soar across the

dark void called “the past is over, the future is not yet here.” It’s called a transition. I have

come to believe that it is the only place that real change occurs.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the transition zone is the only real thing, and the bars are the

illusions we dream up to not notice the void. Yes, with all the fear that can accompany

transitions, they are still the most vibrant, growth-filled, passionate moments in our lives. And

so transformation of fear may have nothing to do with making fear go away, but rather with

giving ourselves permission to “hang out” in the transition zone – between the trapeze bars –

allowing ourselves to dwell in the only place where change really happens. It can be

terrifying. It can also be enlightening. Hurdling through the void, we just may learn to fly.

[Fear can easily disrupt our ambitions and personal growth. We often make excuses to avoid

confronting our angst and apprehensions, all to avoid that scary place called transition. However, the

state of transition enables transformation, realignment, and progress.]

Missional Presbyter Search Team

Beloved Community,

I write with news of the Missional Presbyter

(MP) search team, made up of Winnie Wagner, Edwin Estevez, Emma

Horn, and myself. I know there is excitement and yet anxiety around the

Missional Presbyter, or the lack thereof. My own spouse, who served on

the expeditious Connectional Presbyter (CP) search team, shares many

of your concerns, angst, and yes, loving eye-rolls at our process.

For many reasons, our process has been longer than anticipated. The

MP job description is wholly other than the traditional “Executive”

description, and while the CP is also “new”, many of the elements

remain straightforward, making their process more succinct. We have

had to start from scratch, while working with and alongside the larger

Ignite team. The MP will work closely with Ignite; therefore, we needed

to discern and grasp the identity and function of Ignite before we could

move forward with candidates. We wanted to be prepared. Even then,

when we were doing first round interviews in February, we had to

answer many candidates’ questions with, “We don’t know,” which was

discomforting.

Finding these answers was not cut and dry; they took research, other

voices, and consulting polity. We were also presented with moments of

pause when we needed to respond to things like changes in Balcony II

regarding the working relationship between the MP and CP. Obstacles

like this insisted we find solutions before continuing interviews.

All of this being said, we are thrilled about where we are today! We

have interviewed a wide range of talented folks and we are currently

inviting our final candidates to fellowship, worship, and dream with us in

person.

For now, the Presbytery is in a liminal place, but we Christians should

know a thing or two about this. In this Sunday’s lectionary, we hear

Jesus say, “You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending

upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you

have been clothed with power from on high,” Luke 24.

Just like the disciples who were afraid, confused, in awe, and overjoyed

all at the same time, we too ask that you give us grace and vivacious

patience. Living into this liminal time with conversation filled with

imagination as we wait until we have been clothed by God’s time and

not our own.

With faith, hope, and love, Holly Clark-Porter

The Pentecost Offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people in Christ and

inspire them to share their faith, ideas, and unique gifts with the church and the world.

Each year on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the

church. The Holy Spirit remains with us still, connecting us with the church of the past, continuing

to inspire the church of today, and pointing us to the church of the future.

PC(USA) Pentecost Offering From NCP Stated Clerk, Bob Schminkey

I’m writing today with an update about the PCUSA PENTECOST OFFERING. Many of

you will be receiving this offering in your congregations over the next couple of

months. I hope that the information in this email will help you better understand

and advocate for receiving the offering.

What is the PENTECOST OFFERING? The Pentecost Offering is one of the four special offerings in

the PCUSA. The offering is dedicated to, celebrates and advocates for youth, young adults, and

children at risk. Traditionally received on the day of Pentecost, you may take the offering at any

time throughout the year. A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps our church encourage, develop,

and support our young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the

Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in

the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support

ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency

There are two ways to learn more about this offering, its themes and resources, and ways to

encourage your church to participate.

1. Register for the Webinar hosted by Special Offerings Office on Thu. Apr. 12 at Noon (EDT). Register here:

http://bit.ly/PC18webinar . This webinar will be hosted by Bryce Wiebe, Director of Special Offerings in

the PCUSA. It will review the themes and resources for the 2018 Pentecost Offering, and consider ideas

on how to integrate the Pentecost Offering into your particular ministry setting, including how to use the

40% each congregation retains!

2. Go to the PCUSA website: http://specialofferings.pcusa.org/pentecost for more written information on

the special offerings of our church, including the PENTECOST OFFERING.

Thank you for your support of Presbyterian Mission through the Special Offerings. In peace, Bob

Our Churches – Manokin P.C.

God Did This For You

When they took him down on Friday night, many thought that it

was over. There was nothing more to do but to put him in the tomb

and hide.

On Sunday morning, the women came with their spices and oils to

finish the job of burying him. They wondered how they were going

to remove the great stone that served to keep them out. They

needn’t worry, for you see nothing, not even death could keep

Jesus in. The tomb was empty. God did this for us.

On Sunday morning, the worshippers came to Manokin

Presbyterian Church to find that something there had changed. At

the front of the sanctuary stood an old tree that had been

fashioned into crude cross, studded with nails. On these nails hung

small wooden crosses.

Many came to the cross, out of curiosity perhaps, to survey this

thing that was supposed to be empty, only to find that on each

cross that hung there was their name. Some smiled, some looked

puzzled, all remained silent.

Service began, and our usual “Passing the Peace” was replaced

with the greeting of “He is Risen!” followed by the joyous affirmation, “He is Risen indeed!”

Handshakes and hugs and smiles were shared with all there.

A pilgrimage of sorts spontaneously began to the cross that had been placed at the front of the

sanctuary. And it was there that each one received their cross, engraved with their name, to

remind them that God did this because he loves them so!

Peace and Blessings be,

Pastors Lee Johnson & Dave Parke – Manokin Presbyterian Church

Our Pastors – Rev. Bob

Stoddard, Honorably Retired

Dear Presbytery Colleague:

You too must be sickened by the images of

Palestinians being shot down and tear

gassed by Israeli soldiers as they gather

along the borders of Gaza to protest the

siege that has imprisoned 2 million of them

in that small strip of land for 12 years. But

this is just a fraction of the violence and

oppression that continues in

Israel/Palestine.

I write today, on behalf of Greg and Camilla Jones, myself and our ecumenical friends on the Delaware

Churches for Middle East Peace Steering Committee, to extend to a select few of you and to lay people

who share your concern a personal invitation. Please come and hear firsthand about the injustices taking

place every day on the ground in Israel/Palestine and consider concrete ways we here in Delaware, with

unique access to our congressional representatives, can promote peace and justice and further human

rights for all in the Holy Land of our Lord.

Please circle Thursday, May 10 and join us from 10:00 to 12:00 at Westminster P.C.- Wilmington to meet and

hear the Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon, Executive Director of Churches for Middle East Peace. Mae makes

frequent trips and leads groups to the Middle East and keeps tabs on related developments in Congress

and the Administration. She is therefore, well informed and up to date. Being ordained in the Evangelical

Covenant Church, Mae is also able to engage evangelicals, as well as mainline Protestants, Catholics and

Orthodox, in pressuring our government to implement more humane polices to bring about a just and

lasting peace. .

Longer range, we will use this ecumenical gathering on May 10 to discuss and plan a larger event in the fall

to engage more clergy and lay people in this calling to help the oppressed in Israel/Palestine, including fast

vanishing Palestinian Christians descended from the very first Christians. See the attached flyer for

details. Come meet Mae in May for an enlightening discussion with lunch to follow.

In the name of the Prince of Peace,

Bob Stoddard

Church Leadership Connection – Encouraging Calling

Organizations and Call Seekers

April 2, 2018

Dear Presbytery Leaders,

The Church Leadership Connection (CLC), a ministry of the Office of the General Assembly, will be

hosting a Face-to-Face event during the 223rd General Assembly in St. Louis, MO. This year’s Face-to-

Face event will take place Friday, June 15 – Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

Please encourage those in your presbyteries, both calling organizations and call seekers who you

believe would benefit from Face-to-Face, to sign up for the event when registration opens on April 5,

2018. This is especially the case if you know of organizations that do not yet have a MIF in the system,

but will likely have one by the time General Assembly begins, or organizations that have positions not

requiring MIF’s but have job descriptions. (Schedule & descriptions are on our webpage:

http://pcusa.org/clc)

New for this year, we will be taking 5 pilot congregations who would be willing to do video-conference

Face-to-Face interviews in a block of time. Half of the interviews will be matched by CLC to

encourage openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit. If you know congregations that might benefit

from such an engagement, please contact me for more information.

For you, as Presbytery Leaders, I would like to invite you to take part in one of the listening sessions for

Mid Council leaders. As I have been traveling, I’ve been inviting presbytery and COM leaders to speak

with me about the challenges they are facing in meeting ministry needs and helping

congregations/organizations and pastors/leaders find one another in the call process. While this has

been good and fruitful, I recognize that holding listening sessions at General Assembly would enable

me to hear from more presbyteries in a shorter amount of time.

The Mid Council Listening Sessions are scheduled for the following days and times:

Friday, June 15, 2018 – 2:00-3:30pm

Saturday, June 16, 2018 – 9:30-11:00am

Each listening session will be capped at 8 people to ensure that everyone has a chance to

participate. If needed, we will schedule additional sessions. I hope you will consider signing up on the

CLC webpage starting April 5, 2018.

In addition, we will be hosting a conversation for Mid Council leaders about forming presbyteries and

preparing congregations as hospitable spaces for the diversity of emerging pastoral leaders and

worshiping communities. As that takes shape, we will post information to the webpage.

As always, you are invited to Face-to-Face to meet and connect with call seekers. I would also love to

meet you, so please stop by and say hello as you have time.

I am thankful for your ministries as all of us discern together who God is calling Christ’s Church to be

and become in the 21st century.

Rev. Jihyun Oh ([email protected]), Manager, Call Process Support & Assistant Stated Clerk

Our Pastors – Rev. John Potter with “The Latest from Cuba”, April 11th edition

It’s been about a month since I returned from my latest trip to Placetas, so

it’s time to stop reminiscing and write about what is happening. A lot has

happened in the five months since I last wrote.

This was a simple trip in that there were only two of us, Wendy Kunz and I,

so we had ample time to reflect on what we were seeing this trip and in the

ten years that we have been visiting Placetas together. In 2008, Placetas

was stuck in a rut. Their building had been condemned, and Wendy was

helping them to imagine what kind of building they could create. Now,

much of that dream is visible with the main structure of the new church

erected and waiting to be finished inside and out. The real changes,

however, are not physical but spiritual and mental, and many of them

have appeared in the last six months.

Jesús Rodriguez, who grew up in Placetas, upon graduating from seminary was called to be Pastor of

the church in Remedios and assigned by the Presbytery as

Moderator of the Placetas Session. He helped them see a new

vision that reached beyond their habits and their walls. First of all, he

insisted that all visitors pay for their room and board. That line of

income on the church’s books allowed them to finish plastering the

ceiling of the new building. Second, he reached out actively in

support of the gay men who had started to attend the church, and

we saw the results of that this last trip. Third, he developed a caring

ministry to cancer patients in the town. This is the second active

outreach beyond their walls, aside from providing medicines and colostomy supplies to those in need.

(The first is the ecumenical prayer meeting that Febe has hosted in her house for years.) We saw the

results of those also this trip.

Another change that is powerful is that Alicita and Dra. Liset Amador have begun cooperating to

bring order to the distribution of medicines and colostomy supplies. Alicita now is at the church office

Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 11:00, and she sees that records are kept on how medicines and

colostomy supplies are distributed. This is the first time that order has been brought to that important

ministry.

Finally, Olguita Collado told us with tears in her eyes, what it meant to have $5(CUC) per month for

cancer patients. She writes, “We spend $5 every month on each patient, and I try to vary the menu as

much as I am able, a menu composed of chicken, ground meat, sausages, noodles, canned or

powdered milk, pasta, juice, soap, detergent and chocolate cookies or other goodies for the

children.” Five of her nine patients are children between the ages of four and fifteen. We knew that

Placetas was a cancer hot spot on the island of Cuba; this made it real.

65 MILLION PEOPLE DISPLACED AROUND THE WORLD

Matthew 25:35 - “For I was hungry and you gave me something to drink, I was a

stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick

and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

We live in a time with an

unprecedented 65 million people

including 22.5 million refugees -

the highest number in recorded

history. With global need at its

highest, the USA has set an all-

time low refugee admissions goal

What’s worse, we are only on
