What is REAL Manhood?

Quality time with the younger siblings doesn’t happen often. recently I thought I would make an effort and ended up sit-ting on the couch with my brother watching the TV. yeah, I know. Quality con-versation there. He was shoving his face full of popcorn and intermit-tently exclaiming things such as “Whoa!” or “check it out!” I was sitting next to him with my hands over my eyes, peering nervously through my fingers and intermittently fighting back the urge to vomit. The show was none other than Bear Grylls’ “Man Vs. Wild” and it has me asking a question: Is it time for a man-revolution? The suffragettes and the feminist movement have redefined the female gender role. We have come leaps and bounds in the past five or six decades. Australian women have progressed from gaining the right to vote and recently ended up voting in our first female Prime Minister (I am sure guys voted labour too). We can literally do anything we set our minds to. I am proudly ‘a little bit femi-nist.’ I have taken advantage of so many opportu-nities that weren’t available to my Grandmother or even my Mum. Society has evolved so much. Major waves of change have hit and while girls are thriving in a way they haven’t been able to before feminism, sometimes I look at the young people I work with and wonder how the boys have weathered these waves of change. The industrial revolution took men out of the home and re-arranged the role of father

and husband. The wars took our men overseas and when they returned, they realised that their women had coped without them. Some of them were shell-shocked and were now readjusting to a society that had altered permanently. Then the feminist move-ment further redefined womanhood. But somehow manhood was never redefined. Gone are the days when the nuclear family made up the majority of so-ciety. We are a different world now.

In western society, positive male role modelling is becoming increasingly hard to come by because of the increasingly complex and busy nature of modern life. A lot of young men and boys have been raised with an unanswered question burning deep in their

minds. “What is real manhood?” It is a lack that our school systems feel. It is a lack that our society feels when young men in the turbulence of adolescence and young adulthood find that the only two socially acceptable emotions for them are lust and anger. look at the city streets if you want proof.

Metrosexual, retrosexual, bloke, sensitive new age guy: “Manhood” has been classified and reclassi-fied over the years. No wonder there is confusion amongst our younger generation. I would argue that true identity lies in who you are, not what you do. My guy friends are a diverse bunch: coffee drink-ers, jazz music lovers, cowboys, bureaucrats with office hands completely devoid of callouses, politi-cal enthusiasts and more. Generally, secure modern guys. They are comfortable in their own skin and I wouldn’t change them for the world!

But a guy called Bear Grylls and a show called “Man vs. Wild” has done something to my friends. They are suddenly finding a passion for things their mums would have freaked out over. I guess in a way they are exploring their wilder side. And I think it’s great! But in amongst the wilderness taming, risk taking, extreme hiking wild man called Bear, there is a lov-ing family man, a proud husband and father. He is no bad boy but risk is his lifeblood.

Have you ever read a newspaper headline reading “How I tamed *insert bad boys name here*?” I have seen it a lot. But here is the thing. Maybe men were never meant to be tamed. House trained, yes... (Put down the toilet seat guys.) but not completely tamed.

let’s face it girls, we all love a bad boy. But may-be what we really love is a wild man: A man with strength, security and integrity rather than a bad boy who never really grew up. But never should we re-move from the significant men in our lives the dignity

of risk. For some men, risk is what makes them feel alive. In a society where guys are expected to be ‘nice’ and ‘tame,’ the wild man has largely disappeared and the clos-est thing we can find is the bad boy. Sadly these ones often break the heart they were meant to protect.

Sure, women idolised Jane Austen’s Mr. darcy. But I wonder sometimes whether colin Firth is really what we were after! *sigh* The actual dar-cy appeared to have a severe case of verbal constipation to me. Fa-bio needed a haircut. Any character Hugh Grant played, though funny, needed a backbone. Wolverine, though flying the flag for vein popping muscles and chest hair, is utterly dys-functional emotionally. Media has a lot to answer for in confusing the message! (Ok, so I am a little bit in love with darcy, but you get my point.)

Bring on the wild man, I say. Feminism redefined what womanhood could mean, but it certainly shouldn’t have boxed our guys into the “behave yourself or else” category.

male or female, we have the fREEdom to be who we want to be!

It is a choice that belongs to all of us. The feminist cause reinforced this for us ladies.

Maybe it’s time for a masculine revolution? Put seriously… put the toilet seat down. (cH)

Arncliffe Community Life Centre spring festivAL 2011

Amazing, it’s that time of the year again and this year’s Spring Festival is shaping up to be the best one yet! ☺ Before I get into that though, let me take you on a journey over the last two years and share with you the highlights of this great community event. Back in 2009 they held their first annual spring festival where over 800 people attended being a completely free event, full of wonderful live shows, police and fire truck displays, music, dancers, rides and great food.

Promotional campaigns for the festival were organised through online and print media including the leader, a community newspaper for the St George & Sutherland Shire area.

A quote from the leader’s website said,“An estimated 800 people attended the festival which included food stalls, entertainment, a petting zoo and pony rides. Everything provided on the day was for free with organisers saying the event was a thank-you for the community.”

Fast forward to 2010 and there were over 1200 people that attended with a new feature added, stalls which included, hair spray & lollies for the kids, flavoured corn in a cup, Pure Gelato ice cream, coffee and jewel-lery.

Now the icing on the cake is the upcoming 2011 Spring Festival, boasts an even bigger, better and all round more exciting festival. Some welcome additions are carnival inspired games, great live music on the main stage, a greater variety of food and exciting family games. rest assured great attractions like laser Skir-mish, the jumping castle and the Ferris Wheel will return and they look forward to seeing even more families from the community attend this year. A Personal Trainer’s WARNING: “Are you Exercising for the WrONG reasons?

Now these are some questions that you’ve probably never actually asked your-self before. My theory is that there are actually right and wrong reasons to ex-ercise! I bet you never thought a Personal Trainer would tell you that! Well I am. I am telling you because I have recently learned this and it has made a massive difference to the way I think and view myself when it comes to exercising. When we exercise and start to see results it can be almost addictive and it’s sometimes hard to remember why on earth you started exercising in the first place! I had always exercised and kept fit because I had a passion for fitness and improving quality of life, but I was also a mega stress head and fitness was an outlet where I could expel that stress.

After exercising for a long time, wrong mindsets began to develop. I remem-ber thinking, “I’m exercising so I can get ‘THE Body’ and have nice toned arms and legs that everyone would envy”. Believe it or not, this is the wrong reason to exercise! We can quickly become self orientated and self indulgent when it comes to exercise. We can very easily start to draw our identity and self esteem from how we look. This is dangerous because when we’re 90, we are not going to look so good! Goodbye 40 inch biceps and buns of steel! And goodbye self esteem! I’ve found that if we’re always chasing that perfect figure, we’re never good enough and never ‘there yet’. Before we know it, we’re doing stupid, irra-tional things, just so you can look like ‘The Body.’ Why? So you can show your grandchildren that you did actually look good once?

Next set of questions: Where do you draw your self esteem from? Where do you draw your identity from? Who are you and what do you stand for? We need to be aiming to live a healthy, active lifestyle, to improve quality of life, increase longevity, keep physically and mentally healthy and stable. My belief is that we should never draw our identity or self esteem from ‘how big our biceps are’ or ‘how long, lean and toned we look’ (even though it’s so easy to do!). Al-though these things are great, we should draw our identity and self esteem from who we are, what we stand for, what our morals and standards are and not from how much you can bench press, how ripped, how tough or good we look. you can still be fit, healthy, successful and individual without being Barbie and Ken. A great way to look at things is to see yourself as a temple, I know this may be rather ‘alternative’ of me but it’s a great view to hold of yourself.

Here is one of my favourite verses “don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit...” (1 corinthians 6:19). Now obviously this is a passage out of the Bible, but this passage is very relevant to exercise and nutrition, whether we are religious or not we can all use this philosophy, of seeing our body as a temple. What would your temple look like?

Here is how I imagine it: When I think of a temple I think of a large room with marble floors and marble pillars, a strong structure, tastefully decorated and de-signed. I imagine great big, thick deep purple drapes and maybe even a throne at the middle back of the room with the atmosphere of the temple being peace-ful. I’d also imagine clean, lean, healthy food in the temple.

Now in case you can’t see the metaphor, in this sense the temple refers to your physical condition, your mental condition and your nutritional condition. The strong structure of the temple and beautiful drapes and marble pillars might refer to your physical structure. The atmosphere might refer to our stress levels and mental state. The beautiful food may refer to the food you fuel your body with. If this was your temple, wouldn’t you want it to be strong, healthy and with good atmosphere?

Now if you relate this temple to your body, you would exercise to keep your body strong, mentally and physically healthy and nutritionally healthy! cool huh? What foods are you putting on the table of your temple? Sweets, greasy foods, take away, etc? And how strong is the structure of the temple?

This is my favourite way to look at my body, and why and what foods I am plac-ing on my table. I am also watchful as to things that may change my body’s at-mosphere or make me even more stressed! I am also watchful of how I exercise and strengthen my body. Am I using it effectively and not over training it?

This month we’re going to talk about ‘The Fitness Balance’ and the right reasons to actually get or stay fit. There are so many misconceptions when it comes to exercise. Working in the fitness indus-try, I see many of these as you would imagine. don’t get me wrong! Keeping fit is fan-flamin-tastic! But I would love you all to ask yourself the question – why am I exercising? What am I work-ing towards, and why?

Life is about living it to the fullest, and exercise and nutrition helps that. It’s about being happy and living the healthy, ac-tive lifestyle! An active lifestyle is not just going to the gym every day and doing your 2 bob’s worth of exercise for the day. It’s about literally just being active! For example, when my siblings and I were young, we used to all ride around town in convoy, just for something to do! If we were lucky we would all ride through Mcdonalds drive Thru and buy ourselves a 30 cent cone (yes! 30 cents back then!) I was always on the back of dad’s bike and would draw lovely pictures all over dad’s backside with my ice cream! It made exercise fun!

So challenge: Ask yourself the hard questions! Why are you exercising? Try to see yourself as a temple, take good care of your body! And promote a healthy lifestyle, and an active lifestyle! Over and out... (AH)

Colour Your World

With spring in the air it’s time to lift your mood, break out of that shell and bring colour into your world.

Needing a confidence boost at work – go for blue. Want-ing to vamp it up of course you know red will give you the extra power. It’s the weekend and your feeling dreary, pink will help you feel playful and lively.

With all this talk about colour, how do you put it togeth-er? The beauty of this is anything goes – welcome to the world of colour blocking. If this is too overwhelming go slowly and start with the shoes, bag or even a scarf.

Hope you enjoy and remember the secret to chic is to ap-pear as if you didn’t have to try to hard.

(All shoes and scarf are availa-ble at High Maintenance, 245a Rocky Point Rd, Ramsgate Ph: 9583-1100. Clothes are Cooper St.)

I confess I used to wear black almost head to toe, why? It’s always safe, it matches and you didn’t have to think too much. This all started to changed when colour came into my world and wardrobe. Now it is always a wardrobe es-sential to have your amazing lBd, perfectly cut black pants and the essential blazer. colour can live besides these items quite comfortably.

DO YOU HAVE SDD?(Social deficit disorder)okay so i totally invented that term. across the globe we have been hit with issues like obesity, diabetes, bully-ing, heart disease, depression and many others in recent years. but i am up on my soapbox raising awareness for another one. it’s a first world problem, it’s reaching ep-idemic proportion and it’s everywhere. it’s when social skills go awol and awareness of our surroundings, in-cluding the people in the room with us, is drastically re-duced. let me give you a couple of examples. One of the early childhood learning needs in Australia at the moment is teaching young kids how to play before they get to school and can’t interact with other kids. In secondary school, personal learning programs are geared towards teaching girls how to carry on positive relation-ships and teaching boys to handle their anger (or testosterone...Whatever!). Is anyone concerned that these social skills should come naturally?

Workplaces are the same. Bullying is biggie. Harassment is a biggie. It seems like people are increasingly unable to pick up subtle signs. So this is a health check list. It’s a bit tongue in cheek (because Social deficit disorder doesn’t ac-tually exist), but heck, isn’t it worth checking anyway.

How do you know if you have SDD?1. Your family time consists of all members of the family playing on their phones instead of talking. you may also find that instead of getting out the scrabble board, you are playing an internet version instead. And you are playing a person sitting across the room from you.

2. You believe the best conversation starters are all about you or how good you are. you honestly believe that what you are doing is more exciting than what anyone else is doing… in the entire world. Newsflash pumpkin: a good conver-sationalist knows that it is more about making the other person feel interesting than making you sound superior. It can actually be kinda demeaning (for the other person in the conversation) if they get the vibe that you think they are bor-ing. you realised there was another person in the conversation right?

3. You get frustrated when you don’t know eVeRYTHInG your friends are doing. But in actual fact, they have repeatedly told you that their Great Aunt ruth is down and they are spending the weekend playing lawn bowls or hunting missing dentures and won’t be able to update their Twitter feed. They told you a bazillion times, but you weren’t listening. you were on your phone, Facebook-ing. But to you, in your eyes, modern social law is that if it isn’t on Facey, it isn’t official.

4. You are unaware of social subtleties. There are varying degrees of this. One is that you are unaware that there ArE social subtleties. By virtue of point-ing this out, I just cured you. Now you can concentrate on other things like realis-ing that putting “lOl” at the end of an offensive or rude text message is kinda like saying “No offense but…” and then dealing a verbal blow that would make the Terminator cry. Maybe you are unaware of the fact if people’s eyes keep dart-ing to the door they might be trying to leave. Or if they keep trying to change the subject, they probably don’t want to talk about the one you are currently stuck on. They shouldn’t need to use an actual ‘change of subject card or voucher.’ let the conversation evolve. If dr. Sheldon cooper of “The Big Bang Theory” can learn social subtleties, it can be done!

5. You see an old friend that you haven’t caught up with in years. you find it difficult to find everything to talk about because you have read each-others Facebook pages and already know anything. you don’t go out for coffee anyway. you just say hi and keep walking.

6. You are excited to leave work. not because it’s Friday night and you are meeting up with friends, but because you reached level 16 on D&D (Dun-geons and Dragons) and are battling it out with a cyber friend whom you have never met. His screen name is Ewok. you believe he actually cares about you. I hate to tell you this honey, but at this point you have crossed over from social networking to social Siberia. you possibly need professional help.

7. You don’t feel the need to have Birthday Celebrations. you just celebrate the fact that 250 of your Facebook friends, who you never see in person, all wrote on your wall. you have a friend who doesn’t have a Facebook account. you don’t know when their birthday is. If you did, you wouldn’t know what to do other than go and visit with a Sharpie and write a message on their actual, physi-cal wall.

8. You want to invite a friend from work to a social engagement. Their desk is two meters away from yours. you don’t wait for them to get back from morn-ing tea and ask them. you do one of two things: 1) create a Facebook event and invite them to it or 2) Send them an email so they can click “Accept” or “reject”. thus making it either very convenient to enter the engagement into their calen-dar and sync it with their phone, or downgrading the intense personal rejection you would feel if they said “No thanks. It’s not my thing.”

9. You fail to see the connection between “Hey, can I have your phone-number just in case an asteroid hits earth and I need to check to see that you survived” and well, anything. read between the lines dude. It means “I lIKE yOu! lET’S GO OuT!!” you would however be suspicious if a cer-tain friend started ‘liking’ all your status updates or photos and re-tweeting your tweets.

10. You don’t realise that it is never appropriate to reject the offer of a tic-tac. Again, read between the lines. It’s possibly just polite, but it usually means you stink. When people start to offer you deodorant or give you soap for christmas (Home-Brand, not the fancy stuff), you ought to be concerned about that too.

If you answered ‘yes’ to one or more of these, you are not alone. I am there with you. I understand the angst when the smart phone is removed from my custody or its battery goes flat. At a family dinner a few weeks back, dad had to confiscate all our phones and make us watch a movie with BOTH of our eyes. unreasonable! So I get it.

If your conscience is telling you that you are suffering from this disorder, fear not. There is a cure. I hereby prescribe the following: increase your social con-tact by means not including “www.” Actual contact with actual people is an ac-tual solution to this actual problem.

In more extreme cases, a media detox may be needed. Get a real alarm clock. Keep your phone in a whole different room overnight. No TV. No Internet. No games consoles. No thinking that reality TV is TV about actual reality. realise that “Neighbours” aren’t actually, you know, your neighbours. In extremely ex-treme cases, you may need to travel to a remote country location where there is no phone reception. There is life outside of the multimedia! Good luck finding it and good luck with your recovery! (cH)

REFLECTIONSREFLECTIONS

I Wish I Had Done It…“Oh shucks…. I wish I had done this or done that.” “If only I had of ….” An 82 year old lady from Victoria decided to attend a ‘last chance deb Ball’ recently. This ball was for all those who had never had an opportunity to attend this annual community event. When interviewed and asked what decided her to finally become a debutante at 82 years of age, she closed her eyes for a brief moment and then said, ‘I have a philosophy in life, and that philosophy is to never ever wish I had done something that I wanted to do. I want, and am determined to have no “if only’s” in my life. I’ve done everything I have ever wanted to do, and said everything that I have wanted to say.” This woman was amazing. She had done skydiving in her seventies, gone mountain climbing, travelled to different countries, and been successful in her chosen field for many years, and had enjoyed being married to one husband for over fifty years, giving birth to six children and later enjoy-ing seventeen grandchildren.

I often ask myself that if I found out that I had three days left to live, what would I do, and what would I want to say to certain people? I learned a lot from my interview with that amazing lady and her answer touched a chord within me.

do we enjoy each day as it comes? do we tell our friends and loved ones how much we love and appreciate them? Have we done every-thing on our ‘wish list’ that we’ve always wanted to do? I’m working on mine – how about you? (dG)

IS GOLD IN A BUBBLE?I think the question would be better entitled - are government bonds in a bub-ble?

The Western World is in an unprecedented debt crisis caused by high levels of debt over the last 20 to 30 years. Individuals have borrowed up to the max to buy homes and governments (particularly in uSA, Europe and Japan) have spent more than they have gained in taxes. This has happened year after year and the Global Financial crisis brought home the reality that debt is an issue and must be paid back. Governments unveiled the worst possible solu-tion by solving a debt crisis by borrowing or printing trillions of dollars that they now cannot pay back.

Gold is scarce, cannot be debased and is a store of wealth in uncertain times. It is not gold that is going up, but rather the currencies of the world that are all losing value. Gold and silver markets are extremely volatile so it makes sense to accumulate in small amounts by organising a savings plan. Will gold continue to perform well in the next few years? The following picture tells a thousand words. (JP)

TRAVELTRAVEL

The Beauty of nature that will leave You Breathless

next school holidays, why not take the family to visit one of our neighbours, new Zealand? What’s better than a nice relaxing get away from work, school and fun family bonding time? The landscapes and views are mesmerizing and the beauty of the nature will surely leave you breathless.

Take a trip to Auckland in the North Island and its surrounding islands. The Auckland Sky Tower is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the whole city in all its glory. Kelly Tarlton’s underwater World is similar to the Sydney’s own aquarium, but with it’s own New Zealand twist. Parents and kids will defi-nitely enjoy this experience as they hang out with extraordinary deep-sea creatures. There are oppor-tunities to feed giant stingrays as well as go snorkel-ling with some sharks for those adrenaline junkies out there. The Auckland Museum is for those who are less into adrenaline rushes and more into his-tory and other awesome stuff found in museums. Be sure to check out the Auckland Museum website for upcoming exhibitions and events so you don’t miss out on anything! Auckland Museum will also be host-ing the Fazioli International Piano recitals, so music enthusiasts, keep an ear out for that! Towards the

north east of central Auckland is the Great Barrier Island. It is a secluded, serene paradise that you can explore on foot or by kayaking. Be sure to visit the Waitakere ranges. This rainforest also pro-vides walking tracks that lead to beaches and wa-terfalls, as well as other spectacular places where you are able to go surfing, fishing and even horse riding. Anawhata is located in the Waitakere rang-es and it is an impressive beach with campsites so you can stay overnight. The wildlife in this area is amazing so take some time to find the grey warbler, long-tailed cuckoo and the fern bird, among others. Auckland Zoo is another good spot to bond with the kids. Take them to see New Zealand’s largest col-lection of animals with at least 120 different animal species and more than 750 animals residing there. Auckland is definitely a good place to explore, with by yourself or with a group of people. No matter who you are with, you will most certainly find some-thing exciting to do.

Queenstown is located in the South Island and also has its own variety of tourist attractions. The Sky-line Gondola will lift you up 800 metres over Bob’s Peak where you can see the striking views of the mountains and lakes. don’t forget to take a ride on the Skyline luge where you slide down a track on a three-wheeled cart. It’s incredibly fast but also very safe.

AnD THe BeST PART? It’s suitable for all ages so every body can have a go! Kawarau Jet is an-other activity you shouldn’t miss out on. It’s a jet

boat experience where you can spot some of New Zealand’s wildlife and experience the tranquillity of the Kawarau river. you are also given the opportu-nity to go beneath the water’s surface and feed the fish. Also in Kawarau river is the chance to go White Water rafting. It’s a definite must for thrill seekers.

AnD A Fun FACT? Kawarau river was used as the river Anduin in the lord of the rings series. But whether you’re a fan or not, Kawarau river provides a detailed understanding of New Zealand’s beauty. Why not go bungy jumping while you’re at it? AJ Hackett Bungy invented bungy jumping in Queens-town in November 1988 and now, over twenty years later, it still provides wonderful experiences for those who are daring enough to try it out. The Queenstown Wine Trail presents a fun tour in New Zealand’s wine regions, for any wine enthusiasts. Arrowtown in New Zealand is a twenty minute drive from Queenstown. Formerly a gold-mining town, it is full of history and interesting stories. The shops, restaurants and gal-leries are sure to keep you occupied as the sophisti-cated town takes you in. Gold panning activities are available and a golf course is provided. Shopping, eating and simply relaxing are also on the agenda.

These are just some places to discover in New Zea-land, but obviously there are many more. depending on when you go, there are a range of activities to partake in, including skiing during winter. If you’re interested, book a trip! If you’re not… book a trip anyway or you’ll never know what you’re missing out on! (SF)

HOMEHOME1. First things first, what makes a cool guy cool? It’s the fact that he doesn’t try to be. To achieve the look don’t follow a brochure or a style magazine look book, do your own thing, and don’t go for the generic furniture store places. Think re-upholstered furniture you found at your local garage sale. By the way, this doesn’t mean pick anything at random, pick pieces that reflect you.

2. Secondly what makes a rock star different from a pop star? Well it’s the, “I look like I didn’t have a shower for a week look”. I’m not advising you do not clean your house, that’s just irresponsible. The key is, don’t be particular in arranging things in an orderly fashion. Mix textures and fabrics, use shiny juxtaposing with leathers and faux furs, don’t fold your throw… throw your throw over the lounge, dis-play it like you’ve used it.

3. Also, nothing says rock than dead animal. Now if you’re envisioning tacky polar bear rugs you’re way way way ahead of me. Think leathers, cowhide rugs, muted animal print detailing. And of course if you can throw in a musical instrument… NOT druMS, a guitar or a trumpet to really pull it off.

4. lastly, rockers don’t like bright lights because they’re usually hung over, but this can work in your place too. Accent (non direct) lights are so vital to create moods; candles are also great to allow your eyes to wander around a room. The bonus is that it flatters everyone; the last thing you want is general lighting that is too bright and offensive. (Jy)

let’s have fun guys…everyone wants to be a rock star right? To live the rock star life of eternal parties, not knowing what day of the week it is or even what country you are in. I’m going to show you some cool ways to spice up your life, to add a little star quality.

Stumbled onto this place because a friend of mine was craving lamb chops, so I was thinking to myself who does lamb chops anymore? And to my surprise there is such a place… cHOPHOuSE.

Nestled in Bligh Street in Sydney cBd, chophouse has that raw American style steak house feel with all the dried animal skulls that makes you feel like you’re in a clint Eastwood western.

Their menu being a steak house does not only stick to western style dishes but ranges from Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Asian so really… there is something for everyone. But that’s not why you go to chophouse! you go to chophouse for their meat

which can be slightly pricey but they do serve qual-ity steaks. The only thing is… you don’t get any-thing else on your plate besides the choice of meat you’ve ordered so that means you might have to order extra sides with your meal.

All in all, the pricing is not too overwhelming, rang-ing from $22 for a minute steak to $54.90 for a wagyu steak and starters start from $18. chop-house is a great place to take a few of the boys around, but if you have to bring a lady friend then that’s ok too! (Sy)

CD REVIEWCD REVIEW

Boy & Bear: Moonfire

If you are familiar with Mumford & Son’s folk in-spired music that was a huge hit in 2010, then you’re in for a real treat with Boy & Bear who actually toured with them back then. Marcus Mumford practically praised them at every show as a real local talent with loads of potential! J Frontman dave Hosking is a talented songwriter with a sublime voice but it doesn’t end there, the whole band is comprised of accomplished songwriters and performers. Even though Boy & Bear is quite young in the industry, they have been playing music in the background for many years, showing great depth, skill and a real spirit of adventure that will hopefully keep their music interesting and fresh for years to come. Moon-fire is a solid album with hints of good old fash-ioned folk, retro-romanticism and country-pop harmonies. There is also the undeniable sound of the 60’s on their track ‘Golden Jubilee’ which is very organ inspired, where as ‘Milk & Sticks’ is heavily dependent on strings. Not to say this is a bad thing, it actually blends really well and is totally soothing to the ears. Hosking’s eloquent rich melodies coupled with beautiful guitar riffs, lively piano chords and of course the synergy of the band as a whole is where their strength lies. This is one band to look out for in the future, al-ready taking the world by storm and they have been very well received as a highly listenable and accomplished folk inspired band. (Mr)

Christina Perri: lovestrong

I have mixed emotions when it comes to chris-tina’s album lovestrong. She seemed to be an overnight success with her popular song ‘Jar of Hearts’ that featured on America’s ‘So you Think you can dance’ which then led to a phenomenal amount of iTunes sales. When listening to the album as a whole though, it seems quite bland and nothing we haven’t heard before. It’s sad because her album had such promise but then inevitably landed flat on its face. Similar to the day I just experienced, sunny one moment then pouring down rain the next! It seems she has been branded in the light ballad genre and even though she may want to break free and rock out, this album didn’t al-low her to and came off as flat and choked. Her song ‘Penguin’ is quite cheesy, ‘Sad Song’ made me want to sleep, ‘The lonely’ is a ‘Jar of Hearts’ wannabe but ‘Tragedy’ is one of her only saving grace and really shows off her solid vocal range. ‘Bluebird’ is lovely with its beautiful strummed acoustic and soft piano sound and ‘distance’ surprised me with some nice male/female harmonies. There were moments of greatness on this album that showcased chris-tina as an upcoming artist, but to be honest with you, lovestrong is so bogged down with bal-lads that it eclipses the greatness and leaves you feeling drained to say the least. (Mr)

IL Volo: Il VOlO

rising stars Il Volo have released their self ti-tled debut album and what a gift it is! ‘Il Volo’ meaning ‘the flight’ in English is an appropriate name for the three teenage tenors, (Piero Bar-one, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble) now well known for their wonderful pop-opera style. They certainly have taken off not just lo-cally but internationally, with a very rich and so-phisticated album that has a sense of maturity that is beyond their years. They have the charm, youth and talent to take the world by storm with their infectious harmonies and downright sub-lime sound. The trio sings classical music main-ly in Italian with occasional Spanish and English. English tracks include ‘Smile’, ‘Painfully Beauti-ful’ and ‘This Time’. Some solid tracks that are true stand out gems are ‘O Sole Mio’ (a very up tempo track with solid melodies and beautiful harmonies), ‘El reloj’ (a great guitar driven track with nice vocals), ‘Per Te’ (reminiscient of a mu-sical score from a movie with amazing vocals), ‘la luna Hizo Esto’ (a great blend of guitar and violin accompaniment with a melodic fusion of inspired vocals and music), this has to be one of my favourite songs on the album as it tends to put that extra spring in your step throughout the day! ☺ If there were any weak points in this al-bum I didn’t pick up on them and with that said, I highly recommend Il Volo as great quality music that will brighten your day. MOVIE REVIEWMOVIE REVIEW

contagion With so many stars lined up you could nearly think, are they gonna be top heavy and topple over because of the old recipe for dis-aster, stars over storyline? Thankfully, not this time as Academy Award-Winning director Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traf-fic) has masterfully directed what I call a poetic fusion of thrills, chills, suspense, twists and genuine panic. As the name contagion suggests, it’s relative to a disease but not just any disease but a super fast, deadly and more powerful version of the airborne bird flu virus! Stars at the helm of this gripping suspense thriller are none other than Matt damon (Thomas Emhoff), Gwyneth Paltrow (Beth Emhoff), Kate Winslet (dr. Erin Mears), Marion cotillard (dr. le-onora Orantes), laurence Fishburne (dr. Ellis cheever) and Jude

law (Alan Krumwiede). What starts out as a friendly game of blackjack for Beth (first infected) turns into a full scale pandemic alert as the highly contagious bird flu virus runs rampant throughout the world. Thomas is outraged at the devastation the disease has caused to his wife in a mat-ter of days and wants answers for Beth’s eventual death! Kate Winslet spoke concerning the subject matter of the movie and said, “It turned us all into cross-contamination freaks, for sure. There was a huge bowl of jelly beans on the set. And I love jelly beans. Anything gummy, bring it on. So I went right for the bowl and Steven said, Do you have any idea how many crew members I have seen put their hand in that bowl in the last few weeks?” (Mr)

Some are hailing Warrior as the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) version of rocky and fans are lauding this film as the greatest MMA movie to ever appear on film! Even newbie’s can learn to appreciate the dedication and heart that the MMA fighters in this movie seek to portray. It has some of the most realistic cage fight sequences to date and is faithful to the genre too. The entertainment factor for this film is very high and those of you that are put off by MMA ac-tion will be pleasantly surprised to find that this movie will genuine-ly move you in a way you never thought it could. ☺ Brendan and Tommy conlon played by Joel Edgerton (King Arthur, Ned Kelly) and Tom Hardy (rocknrolla, Inception) compete in a massive 16 man middleweight tournament aptly named “Sparta”, a grand prix

Warrior style competition held over 2 nights in Atlantic city with a winner takes all purse of 5 million dollars! Nick Nolte (cape Fear, Hulk) stars in the role of Paddy conlon, an alcoholic ex-wrestling coach of sons Brendan & Tommy. Tommy and his mum left Paddy due to his abusive behaviour and Brendan left to start a family of his own. They are reunited after many years and Tommy reconciles with Paddy after serving for a short while with the marines, wanting Paddy to coach him for the upcoming Sparta competition. Brendan on the other hand is a physics teacher who fights in local car park brawls to earn extra cash in hopes of paying the bank before they repossess his home. The school finds out about the fights and Brendan is suspended, turning back to his previous train-er and eventually entering the Sparta competition too! (Mr)

courageousAs we have come to expect of the very talented Kendrick Brothers, (Facing the Giants, Fireproof) here we have another great movie that’s been billed as their best one yet! This is a truly heart warm-ing, funny and meaningful film that will inspire and make you fall in love with your family all over again. Not to mention that you should be already... hehehe. ☺ It’s great to see director Alex Kendrick once again starring in one of his movies as deputy Adam Mitchell. One of four deputies that face daily dilemmas related to work and fam-ily, they in turn learn to rely on each other and God as a source of strength, wisdom and hope. But the question really is how will they respond when the ultimate tragedy befalls one of them? They will have to face their fears, wrestle with their hopes and hold onto their

faith in order to overcome their greatest challenge. With elements of ac-tion, drama and humour, this fourth movie from Sherwood Pictures is set to touch hearts and change lives. courageous is about the meaning and importance of fatherhood with the four deputies trying to figure out what it means to be a great dad!

Producer Stephen Kendrick said of the film, “The film’s desire is for men to leave the theatre making the decision that Joshua made when he declared in Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”. Honour truly begins at home, take the challenge and be coura-geous. (Mr)

No marketing guru will ever create this kind of sym-bolism for a car again. The car was all-wrong, rear-engine, air-cooled, designed by Hitler and sounded like two Walrus’ mating.

The new Beetle is none of that. It’s a marketing spinner, a money maker, Golf in drag. It uses the same engine as the Golf GTI that means turbo goodness, Golf-ish interior and a beautifully cali-brated Golf dSG gearbox. Its slightly more unisex than the Beetle that it replaces. Gone is the Ger-bera flower that adorned all Beetles of the past and gone is the bubble roof.

The new Beetle comes with an array of 1.6lt Turbo diesel, 2.0lt direct Injection with 5 speed manu-als or dSG gearboxes. Most will opt for the pricier dSG, its smooth and quick, and just plain better than a manual gearbox.

Here is it, the hope of the world… well maybe not. long ago when WWII was just over, the united States and its allies shut down the most evil man in the world and his army. They also dismantled their weaponry, but left one thing… they said you can keep your Beetle! Huge mistake… people the world over bought into the ideals that the car ended up representing… FReeDoM! Hippies, movie goddesses and rock stars all had one, there was even a movie (Herbie) which made the car ever more popular with its human like traits.

So who will buy this car? Well to be quite frank, no one who likes practicality, because the GOlF is better in this area. It wouldn’t be those who are looking for retro chic, because the MINI is better in every way.
