• What does it do?– Employers and Employees pay a tax that funds

Federal Work Programs

• What do they do?– It helped put people back to work.– They helped build highways, repair bridges, build

parks and public buildings, such as schools, libraries, and post offices.

• Examples:– Works Progress Administration (WPA)– Public Works Administration (PWA)

Environmental Improvement Programs

• What do they do?– It helped put people back to work.– They worked to build wildlife preserves, plant

trees, maintain forest roads and trails, and build lookout towers to prevent forest fires

• Examples:– Emergency Conservation Bill– Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

Farm Assistance Programs

• What do they do?– The government offered payments to farmers if

they did not grow certain crops. This prevented a surplus of crops.

– The TVA worked to clear rivers to allow farmers to ship their products and they built dams to prevent flooding and provide hydroelectric power.

– The government worked to provide electricity to rural areas of the country.

Increased Labor Rights

• What do they do?– Labor unions were formed to help people protect

their jobs once they were employed.– A minimum wage and maximum number of hours

a person could work was established.– It became illegal for kids under 16 to work.

• Examples:– Fair Labor Standards Act
