A Jimmy Fund Clinic patient is joined on-air by Tim Wakefield and Clay Buchholz.
By Jay AdamsCEG CORRESPONDENT
After some 30 years of laying foundations, supervisingearthmovers and breaking ground, Frank Annaldo needed todo more digging.
Deeply, within his own torso. And when he did, he savedhis own life.
Annaldo, a construction worker, supervisor and builderfor three decades from Hampton, N.H., was one of hundredsof cancer survivors who recently told their story over the air-waves in Boston in August.
Annaldo and his gastrointestinal oncologist, Dr. RobertMayer of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, wereguests on the popular Dale and Holley mid-day show onWEEI Sports Radio Network, the flagship station of theBoston Red Sox and Celtics. The broadcast was part of 36hours of the WEEI/New England Sports Network (NESN)Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon to raise money for cancer
research. The Jimmy Fund has been the Red Sox prominent chari-
ty since Ted Williams popularized it in 1953.WEEI began this telethon tradition in 2002, teaming up
with the Red Sox and the Jimmy Fund to produce and broad-cast an 18-hour Radiothon that raised nearly $325,000 in oneday to help fight cancer in children and adults. In 2003,NESN joined in, and the second annual event shattered allexpectations, raising more than $1 million to support theJimmy Fund’s fight against cancer at Dana-Farber CancerInstitute.
Over the past eight years, this event has raised more than$21 million for research and care at Dana-Farber.
In 2009, local sports fans were moved to give donationsthrough interviews with cancer patients and survivors, physi-cians and researchers, and athletes and celebrities, all ofwhom came together to raise more than $4.5 million. Thisyear, the ambitious goal was $5 million, but, for the first

time, the fundraiser fell a couplemillion short, due to tough eco-nomic times.
One of 100 TalesAnnaldo’s story was one of 100
told over the radio and on TV inAugust. It goes like this:
“I’ve been in construction, going on over 30 years. I actuallystarted when I took a course in theArmy, back in 1975-78,” saidAnnaldo. “It was a carpenter’scourse. When I got out, I just pur-sued that field.
“I started off as a laborer, fram-ing houses. From there, the samegentleman I worked for opened upa foundation business, concretefoundations, residential and com-mercial. From that point, I workedin the union, doing natural gaslines, from the old cast iron pipe tothe plastic PVC pipe, in the late70s, early 80s,” added Annaldo.
“I just kind of progressivelymoved into different areas of con-struction. I did some excavating fora company called R & D Homes,
based in Ayer, Mass. I was a super-intendent for them. We did every-thing, helped dig the holes, helppour the foundations, we did
everything from the ground up.“I ran the big Caterpillars, the
backhoes, the excavators. We had acouple of Bobcats, bulldozers. It
was a pretty fair amount ofmachines. From that point, I gotinto being a superintendent, to real-ly running the projects. And then,
progressively, into learning how tobuild homes completely. I learnedand learned, from A to Z, then leftto start my own business.”
In 1997, Annaldo began his owncompany, but not in Hampton.
“We moved out to Kansas backin 1991, because the economywent down then,” he said. “Mywife took on a job at Garmin, theGPS Company. So, we moved outto Kansas and, again, I took onsuperintendent jobs. At one point, Istarted my own home buildingcompany with a partner.”
Still with Boston roots, hischoice of company name was curi-ous.
“It was called East CoastHomes,” he laughed. “I actuallythought about being from here. Iactually took some kidding about it[out in Kansas].”
Annaldo ran his business foralmost three years.
“We kind of decided we wantedto move back home to Hampton,New Hampshire,” which is 30miles north of Boston on theMassachusetts/New Hampshireline. Ironically, he didn’t keep thename East Coast Homes. Heworked for a year to get his feetwet again, then named his compa-ny after himself, AnnaldoConstruction.
“That was easy,” he laughed.“I am a one-man show. If I need
people, if I do a bigger job, I’ll hiresubcontractors to do the electrical,do the plumbing. They get it donequicker. But, I’m pretty much aone-man show. There are a lot lessheadaches,” said Annaldo.
Sudden AfflictionThe aches, however, unexpect-
edly began to come not inAnnaldo’s head, but deep withinhis torso.
“In 2007, I just went for a rou-tine physical. I had a little stom-achache. It had just gone on a littlebit longer than I thought was nor-mal,” said Annaldo. He hadplanned a colonoscopy anyway, but pushed it up sooner. “That’swhen they found it. They foundcancer, a mass in my colon, thesize of a golf ball. I was 51.
“I was supposed to do acolonoscopy the year before, but Iblew it off. I had a lot of jobs to

Warning: Do not be fooled by other manufacturer’smisrepresentation of a steel trip-edge design.
It is NOT the same as the Avalanche.
We are the largest Avalanche Snow-Pusherdealer in the U.S. and we owe it all toAvalanche’s exclusive Steel Trip-Edge Design.
The “scrape while you push” action saves oncostly oversanding and salting because it eliminates the “ice-rink” effect causedby rubber edge pushers.

do,” said the one-man show. “One of theleading causes for the kind of cancer I had isyour diet. I can attest to that. You eat off thatlunch wagon that comes into the parking lotevery day…. If you’re eating bad food all thetime, well…”
Frank Annaldo had to tell his wifeMichelle, his son Jason, (from a previousmarriage), his daughter, Lauren, and daugh-ter Renee, who was barely a teen at the time.
“I didn’t tell them right away. My youngerdaughter, Renee, I just told her I had somestomach problems. It’s just one of thosethings where you try to figure out how to tellthem,” said Annaldo.
Immediate surgery was necessary atDana-Farber in Boston, one of the mostrespected cancer centers on earth.
“They removed 85 percent of my colon. Ihad seven other polyps that weren’t cancer-ous, but they were there,” he added. “Theytook out a lot. After that, I healed up.”
Annaldo never stopped moving duringthis time. He kept doing all kinds of con-struction work. But he was not out of thewoods.
“I was supposed to get on aresearch program for a new drug. Ihad a CAT scan and they found it(more cancer) in my liver. That wasOctober 2008,” he said. “I was onsome heavy duty chemo for sixmonths and they did a second opera-tion and they removed a section ofmy liver.”
On the eve of disaster, thingsturned around. In Spring 2009, FrankAnnaldo was given a clean diagno-sis.
“They had gotten everything out. They weren’t finding anything in theCAT scans. I actually went back towork, roughly two months after myfirst operation. I worked for a gentle-man at that time as a superintendent.I couldn’t physically do a lot,” hesaid. “I would go to chemo everytwo weeks, miss maybe a day ortwo, but I was actually a boss. I hadto get out. I couldn’t sit in the house.I probably lost 50 pounds. They gaveme large doses of chemo, but I came throughit pretty good.”
Working All the TimeHe progressively got stronger.“I’m not building houses right now, but
I’ve been working steadily from that time,
interior remodeling, kitchens, I’ve done 160windows in the last three weeks. I’ve gotwork until the end of the year. I reallyhaven’t stopped,” said Annaldo.
But the disease he fights is insidious. “They found a small spot in my lung. It
has to be examined again in September. I’venot overly concerned about it. Dana-Farberhas done wonderful things for me.”
Annaldo drives into Boston every threemonths for blood work, six months forscans. He’ll make fewer visits as he getscloser to the five-year survival mark. But themost recent drive into Boston was to sharehis story with all of New England andbeyond; to 500,000 radio listeners.
“Dr. Mayer called me and just asked if Iwould do it with him, go on air, and I said,‘I’d do it in a heartbeat. Absolutely,’ ” saidAnnaldo.
On WEEI, during the Dale Arnold-Michael Holley mid-day show, Annaldo toldlisteners, “‘I’m here. I’m alive because ofDana Farber. I’m doing really well and Ican’t say enough about it. [When I was diag-nosed] It was a shock. I was set back by it.
But I tell you, one of the things that I realizedafter I left Dr. Mayer’s office, was that I wasreally comfortable and I wasn’t afraid any-more. I felt like I was in the best hands that Icould be in and I never worried about it.”
Get a ColonoscopyMayer of Dana-Farber added, “Yes, Frank
was found to have colorectal cancerin May of 2007. It’s a very commoncancer in the United States, and it’sthe second most common cause ofcancer death. And the most impor-tant message is: It is really preventa-ble. Colonoscopy identifies pre-can-cerous lesion polyps. You removethem, you don’t get cancer.
“And, over the last 20 years, thenumber of people in this countrywho died of colon cancer hasdropped by 13 percent,” said Mayer.“That’s a big number and that is real-ly a step forward. In addition, treat-ment has become much more effec-tive.
“Frank made it a little challenging for us,because he wasn’t straightforward. He hadhis original operation. And then, had to havea second operation because we found dis-ease had found its way to another part of hisbody. And that was all taken care of. He’shad a lot of chemotherapy, and I must say, he
looks pretty well. And tolerated it amazing-ly.”
Annaldo’s family tolerated it amazinglytoo.
“It does affect you, and the one thing itreally affects is my family. More than itaffected me, I think it affects the families ofpeople who have cancer,” he said.
Annaldo has some advice for fellow con-struction workers — do your own digging, starting at age 50.
“Definitely have a colonoscopy whenyou’re told to. It’s really quick, it’s easy andit could save your life.”
He doesn’t think he’d be alive without it. “I think 10 years ago, I might not have
gotten through it. They’ve made tremendousstrides over the years,” said Annaldo.

BOSTON (AP) The state has asked the hundreds of pri-vate snow plow drivers it hires every winter to keep thestate’s highways clear to upgrade their equipment, but thecontractors are balking, saying the changes are too expen-sive.
State transportation officials want the contractors to investin side-wing plows that clear more snow, and more efficientsalt spreading devices.
Matthew Frazier, president of the Massachusetts Snowand Ice Contractors Association, told The Boston Globe theupgrades could cost as much as $20,000 per vehicle. He saidthe contractors don’t trust the state’s promise to make up forcost of the new equipment by paying a higher hourly rate.
State highway administrator Luisa Paiewonsky said thechanges are intended to save taxpayers’ money.

Cloud Logging & Trucking Embraces New Opportunities By Debbie L. HolmerSPECIAL TO CEG
A winding country road, rolling meadows, an old millstream, a historic cemetery: the little town of Reading, Vt., inWindsor County is a quiet little neighborhood in the GreenMountain State. The population was 707 at the 2000 census.
Even with his dog Boo along for the ride, surviving a dog-eat-dog economy in uneasy times is a difficult task for JimCloud, owner and operator of Cloud Logging & TruckingLLC. But with his wife Kim doing the books, his new Bandit3590 chipper in the woods, and trusty Boo by his side, Jimand Cloud Logging & Trucking are in it for the long haul.
Cloud has seen his fair share of ups and downs in the log-ging business. After his three-year stint in the service, he didsome cable logging and then in 1990 he bought a truck.
“In the late ’90s, I went more towards the trucking and outof the cable logging businessuntil 2005 when I decided togo back into logging. I knewthe chainsaw cable thingwasn’t going to work, so Idecided to do some mecha-nized logging,” Cloud said.
After purchasing a fellerbuncher and other equip-ment, he decided to purchasea chipper from A. LewisEquipment LLC inMiddlesex, Vt.
Cloud first purchased aseries of smaller chippersfrom a competitive manu-facturer.
“They were real nice chip-pers, which I kept for awhile— until I went to the show inBangor, Maine,” said Cloud, referring to the NortheasternForest Products EquipmentExpo. There, he purchasedthe Bandit Model 3590, a 30in. (76 cm) diameter capaci-ty machine with 700 hp (522kW).
“Our Bandit 3590 is verywell built, and the quality ismuch better than our oldchipper,” said Cloud. “Whilethe feed rate is a little slower than our old chipper, we can puta lot more material into it. The hole size is just incredible. Weused to have to take most of the short blocks back in thewoods because I was afraid they would get stuck betweenthe feed wheels and the throat on our old chipper and we’dhave to climb inside and draw them back out. However, withour Bandit 3590’s feed wheels positioned right next to thedrum, there is no chance of that, which makes life much eas-ier on the landing.”
The ability to chip virtually any wood thrown its waysaves Cloud time and money.
“Sometimes it’s hard to justify this machine for theamount of wood I’m doing right now,” said Cloud. “But Ifigure that if I can pay for it without wearing it out, I’m nothurting anything.”
Cloud noted that he’s done more than 60 loads on the
same set of knives.“I’ve touched them up two or three times and am not
ready to take them out yet.”The 3590 can handle whole trees and extremely limby
material up to 3 ft. (.9 m) in diameter.Cloud also is pleased with the fuel consumption he’s get-
ting out of his Bandit 3590.“We’re running right around 15 to 20 minutes to a 45 ft.
box and about 10 gallons per box — or eight gallons on theaverage,” Cloud reported. “I’ve done a 45 ft. box in less than15 minutes. We don’t fool around. It’s got a huge openingand I can put a lot of pieces in that hole.”
With the currently oppressed markets, Cloud hauls any-where from 15 to 20 loads a week.
His nephew, who used to work full time for him, now justworks two to three days a week, laying wood down. Histrucker helps out, too.
“When we are going fulltime, sometimes we can go25 to 30 loads a week, butright now we’re only totaling anywhere from 15 to 20 loadsa week between the chips, round wood pulp and the logs.”
What does the future hold for Cloud Logging? At themoment it’s a wait-and-see game.
“It was weird how the light switch went out this spring,”said Cloud. “All last year the mills in Ryegate, Vt., told methere were only 14 weeks they could run at full capacitybecause they couldn’t get enough wood — and now there istoo much. The round wood and paper markets were the mainreason, and the round wood market just dried up so everyonestarted chipping more. If we can get the paper markets backup, that will mean more round wood out of the tree — therewon’t be as much wood to chip.”
The Bandit Model 3590features a gaping 30 by48 in. (76 by 122 cm)opening that will acceptthe toughest materialsaround.
