NESGFOA | 72nd Annual Conference

NESGFOA Members, Colleagues and Friends, Welcome to the 72

nd New England States Government Finance Officers Associations’ Fall Conference and Annual Meeting in Stowe, Vermont. Vermont is a four-season State that offers great skiing at several mountains, delicious maple syrup, amazing cheeses, tempting candy, many craft beers, delightful hiking, peak fall foliage and traditional farming. We are excited to host this year’s conference in the Town of Stowe which captures many of these Vermont qualities. To paraphrase Stowe’s website, “In autumn, fall’s color capital comes alive with vibrant colors scattered in the hills and countryside to enjoy by car, hiking, biking or kayaking”. The Vermont Host Committee has completed a diligent effort to provide educational sessions on relevant topics by quality presenters, to offer a taste of Vermont entertainment and food, and for an additional fee, to golf, paint and/or enjoy a Vermont craft beer tasting. Please refer to the timeline of events below and educational presentations later in this brochure. Please remember to attend all meals for which you signed up. Concurrent with registration beginning at noon on Sunday, there is golf scramble nearby at the Stowe Country Club. For non-golfers, registered participants can enjoy a Paint ‘n Sip option, creating a Vermont landscape while enjoying a local Vermont beer or glass of wine. Lastly, there is a Vermont craft beer tasting at the Whistle Pig Pavilion at Spruce Peak. The opening reception at the The Lodge at Spruce Peak kicks off the conference with music by Vermont’s Chris Peterman Jazz Quartet and is followed by Archer Mayor, a former detective, EMT, firefighter and ski patroller and currently a mystery writer. His 27 books follow the life of fiction character Detective Joe Gunther and are all set in Vermont. On Monday we will travel by bus to Trapp Family Lodge to enjoy a reception with a gorgeous view of Vermont. In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family settled in Stowe on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Music by Vermont’s Chad Hollister Acoustic Trio will enhance our evening. Bill Torrey, Vermont Storyteller will complete the evening. Bill is a sixth generation Vermonter whose kin were at Fort Ticonderoga with Ethan Allen in 1775. Our Tuesday evening is planned at The Base Camp at Spruce Peak with a reception and dinner. During the reception, we will be dazzled by Vermont’s magician Marko. Soul and Blues music by Vermont’s Dave Keller Trio will complement the evening. After dinner, Chad Hollister and his 10-piece band, along with guest musician Daby Toure, will rock the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center. All of these events are perfect opportunities to meet New England counterparts, network and have fun with everyone. I am excited to report that NESGFOA updated its website this past year to make it a more modern site for its members and supporters. This switch was the effort of a focused sub-committee that guided the Board through the successful RFP process. We are pleased with the future of how NESGFOA will conduct its communications with its members. You visited the new site at www.nesgfoa.org in order to register for this Fall Conference, but please pass along any feedback you may have to the Board as we finalize the transition by year-end. The Spring Conference held in April of 2019 was a successful effort and watch for the spring 2020 conference announcement on the website. During your time at the conference, thanking the sponsors and host committee members is encouraged. Without their efforts and sponsorships, this wouldn’t be the conference that it is. I look forward to seeing everyone at The Lodge at Spruce Peak ~ a fabulous Vermont resort location. If this will be your first conference, we hope it will not be your last. See you in Rhode Island in 2020! Cheryl A. Lindberg, President, New England States GFOA
