President’s Welcome Welcome to Colorado College! I am thrilled to join CC at the same time as you, and at this promising moment – as we emerge from the pandemic and imagine new possibilities. You are joining a dynamic faculty and dedicated academic community that puts students first. You were chosen from an outstanding pool of applicants who are committed to student learning and scholarly work. Your passion for teaching stood out, and because of it you will fit in beautifully. We are celebrating 50 years of Colorado College’s immersive Block

Plan, and I invite you to think boldly about the contributions you will make and the opportunities ahead. The Block Plan provides an excellent laboratory for creative and inventive teaching. You have a unique opportunity to impact talented and curious young people, at an institution where faculty-student engagement is highly valued. Your faculty colleagues will offer a rich variety of pedagogical styles and scholarly interests from which you can learn, and you will be supported in your work by staff colleagues who are passionate about our mission. You are joining our community in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic and at a time when our region, nation, and world are now more attuned to the kind of antiracism work we started three years ago. Your charge to educate and mentor the next generation of leaders and changemakers is both timely and critical. As we look back at the past 50 years, there is no better time to look forward to the next 50, and consider the remarkable achievements we will make together. I am excited to engage with you in person to hear your questions and ideas. I am so pleased to welcome you this fall! Sincerely,

L. Song Richardson, President

Dean of the Faculty’s Welcome

Dear Colleagues, I’m very happy that you have joined the faculty at Colorado College. Your scholarly talents and commitment to teaching will greatly enrich a strong and vibrant community of teacher-scholars and creative practitioners. I and my colleagues in the Deans’ Office will do everything we can to help you thrive and build a satisfying career and life here. As the world and our college community emerge into a world shaped by COVID-19 and a new escalation in the struggle for social justice, our teaching, research, and service takes on a sense of urgency. The value of a liberal arts education is even higher at times like these: we are preparing our students to ask tough

questions of the world in which they live and will be composing meaningful lives and satisfying careers. We offer them a multidisciplinary approach to recognizing, understanding, and addressing the myriad of complicated forces and issues that shape our lived realities. As you well know, Colorado College has made a commitment to become an antiracist institution. We are in the midst of carefully examining all of our policies, practices, and assumptions to ensure that we offer our diverse community of students, faculty, and staff a respectful, welcoming, and supportive environment in which everyone can freely be themselves and do their best. I look forward to your perspectives and contributions to this commitment, which impacts every aspect of our academic and communal life. The college has many resources to support your development as a teacher and scholar, many of which are described in this guide. Please familiarize yourself with places such as the Crown Center, which supports faculty teaching, scholarship, and creative work through a rich array of programming, and the Center for Global Education and Field Study, which provides logistical support for class field trips and off-campus experiences. Get to know the wonderful staff at Tutt Library, especially your divisional librarian, who can be invaluable partners in your teaching and research projects. The director of faculty research support can customize assistance in going after external grants. These and other important offices, divisions, and programs are briefly described in these pages, along with useful links. Your colleagues both within and outside of your department are also crucial sources of support and advice. In this teaching-centered college, lively conversations about pedagogy are on-going and useful at every stage of your career. Among our faculty there is a spirit of generosity in sharing successful strategies, cautionary tales, and ideas to enhance our students’ intellectual experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Please take advantage of the collective wisdom and culture of experimentation that characterizes faculty life at CC by reaching out to colleagues in different circles. As Dean of Faculty and Acting Provost, I am here to support and represent every member of our lively, diverse and top-notch faculty. I invite you to feel free to come to me with your questions and observations. Welcome to CC! Claire Oberon Garcia Professor of English Dean of the Faculty/Acting Provost

Helpful Facts Academic Calendar

The academic year starts on Monday, August 30, 2021, with faculty academic programming during the New Student Orientation week. There is a Fall Break around the week of Thanksgiving. The college does not close, and classes continue on federal holidays that fall within a block (e.g., Labor Day). The academic year ends with Commencement on Sunday, May 22, 2022. A Summer Session with three blocks provides opportunities for taking and teaching additional summer courses. View and download the academic calendar.

The Campus Colorado College was founded in 1874, covers about 90 acres, and is located just north of downtown. People often use cardinal directions; Pikes Peak, the unmissable landmark, is to the west of the campus. The campus is very compact, and buildings and venues are located within minutes of each other by foot or bicycle. View the campus map, the campus webcam, a historic walking tour of the campus, and our campus master plan here.

The Block Plan 2020 was the 50th year of the Block Plan. Curious about how it came to be? Watch our documentary about the past, present and future of the Block Plan.

Our Students CC has approximately 2,200 students. Chosen from a pool of 10,969 applicants, the Class of 2025 will arrive in mid-August, and 690 students will begin their studies. For the eighth year in a row, more than a quarter of the incoming class self-identify as a Black, Indigenous or person of color (BIPOC) (28%) and 7% are international students. In the last decade, the population of BIPOC and international students has increased by more than 60% while 10% of our incoming class are the first in their families to attend college.

People and Resources During new faculty orientation and your first year, you will meet colleagues from academic division offices and from other offices who will be helpful resources and collaborators for your work at Colorado College. Here is a starter list of people with whom you are most likely to interact as you start at CC.

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty The Office of the Dean of the Faculty oversees the academic affairs at the college and supports faculty and students. Feel free to drop by our office on the second floor of Armstrong Hall or email us to ask questions or just to say “hello.”

Visit our website for the full scope of the office’s work and the people in the office.

The Information for New Faculty page might be especially useful.

Faculty Handbook: The fundamental governance document for the college is the Faculty Handbook. This year it is undergoing a review called for by our Antiracism Initiative to make sure that it consistently expresses our values and aligns with our attention to equity and inclusion. Every faculty voice is important in the endeavor, and we invite you to a series of discussions of the revision that will be held throughout the year. Familiarize yourself with the Faculty Handbook here.

Accessibility Resources Disability is an important aspect of diversity at Colorado College, so contributing to the college’s antiracism commitment is at the very core of our work. In addition to broadly supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across campus, Accessibility Resources provides access to academic and co-curricular experiences for a diverse group of students with disabilities through a range of accommodations and services. We also support faculty by consulting on classroom accommodations, discussing individual student concerns, and helping to craft disability-related syllabus statements.

Contact: Jan Edwards or Sara Rotunno Please visit the Accessibility Resources website.

Bookstore Book orders are due no later than 5 weeks prior to the start of each block. Please see the Colorado College Bookstore website for information on how to order books.

Center for Global Education and Field Study The Center for Global Education & Field Study (CGE&FS) consists of three teams which engage in three primary missions related to mobility, off-campus study, and internationalization. The Field Study team supports faculty professional training, pedagogy, and curricular development related to field research and teaching, and coordinates and facilitates domestic field trips, including support for courses making use of CC’s Baca Campus. The Education Away team coordinates both faculty-led off-campus programs (Block or semester) as well as partner programs through external providers and universities. Education Away also provides budgetary oversight of off-campus programs, administers need-based aid for study away programming, and offers risk and emergency management support. Finally, CGE&FS is home to the college’s International Student &

Scholars Services team, which offers a wide range of support to the college’s population of visa-holding students and faculty, including immigration assistance, documentation, reporting, and compliance functions. Please visit the Center for Global Education and Field Study website.

Colket Center for Academic Excellence With the goal of fostering an inclusive and antiracist campus where all students can be successful, the Colket Center supports student learning, cultivates academic skills, and promotes intellectual discussion. The Colket Center brings an assets-based approach to our work, offering students opportunities for collaborative learning and peer teaching. They also contribute to faculty development and to the scholarship of teaching and learning on the campus. The Colket Center includes the Quantitative Reasoning Center, the Ruth Barton Writing Center, a Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Education Specialist, and a Thesis Writing specialist. They have a staff of eight professionals, two administrative support staff, and ninety student tutors. More than 75% of CC students use services offered by Colket each year. Professional staff in the center work with students one-on-one, teach workshops inside and outside of classes, as well as adjunct and block courses, and consult with faculty on issues related to learning and teaching. Please visit the Colket Center for Academic Excellence website.

Crown Faculty Center The Crown Faculty Center supports faculty across the three pillars of teaching, research, and service, in addition to faculty well-being. During the academic year, Crown offers a variety of professional development opportunities including workshops targeted to faculty based upon career stage, book clubs, communities of practice, teaching and learning circles, and year-long seminars. Summer offerings include retreats and intensive, multi-day workshops.

Contact Manya Whitaker for more information. Please visit the Crown Faculty Center website.

Department and Program Administrative Assistants The Academic Administrative Assistants for departments and programs are an invaluable asset. They have a wealth of knowledge about the college and departmental resources. They can be a resource for getting you started with keys, ID card, office space and supplies, printer access, business expenses and research accounts among many other things.

Faculty Research Grants The Director of Faculty Research Support, Tess Powers, provides comprehensive support for faculty seeking external funding for their scholarly and creative work. New faculty are particularly encouraged to participate in the one-hour “Grants Orientation” session – ideally in their first year at the college. (More information on programming and how to register is available here.) The Grant Orientation session provides an overview of the services Tess's office provides and near-term recommendations for becoming prepared for the process. (While applying for external funding may make sense only rarely over the course of an individual’s career, it’s important for faculty to become aware of their target funders well in advance, so that they are positioned for success when the time is right.) The Orientation

session also includes an overview of internal funding sources, including the SEGway program, which provides seed funding to support strategic activities that will help make future external grant proposals more competitive. After the Grants Orientation, Tess meets with faculty one-on-one in order to develop a five-year External Grants Plan that documents key funders and next steps.

For more information, please contact Tess Powers.

Office of Academic Programs The Office of Academic Programs (OAP) promotes engaged teaching and learning, academic innovation, student success, and research in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The OAP houses central academic programs at Colorado College: the First-Year Program, the Common Read, and the Independently Designed Major (IDM). The OAP administers the first-year curriculum (CC100 & CC120) and partners with the Crown Faculty Center to offer a range of workshops, learning circles, and individual consultations regarding inquiry-driven, experiential, and transitions pedagogies.

Contact Aaron Stoller for more information. The Office of Academic Programs website can be accessed here.

Student Opportunities and Advising Hub (The Hub) The Advising Hub (often just called "The Hub") staff advisors partner with students to help them transition to and through Colorado College, so they can gain the most from their CC experience. Each incoming student is paired with a faculty and Hub staff advisor. Hub advisors help students navigate campus policies and procedures and also connect them to campus resources and opportunities. The Student Opportunities Manager supports students who apply for Venture Grants or National Fellowships and works with students interested in partnering with faculty on research opportunities. Students interested in taking time away from campus or taking a block off, need to contact the Hub to discuss possible ramifications (academically and financially) as well as to complete appropriate forms.

Summer Session Faculty may choose to teach courses in the Summer Session. In addition to courses for undergraduate students, faculty can also propose teaching a 2 ½ week course in the Pre-College Program for high school students. Faculty can earn extra salary or have their summer teaching block count towards their regular teaching load.

Contact Jim Burke with any questions regarding Summer Session. The Summer Session website can be accessed here.

The Butler Center The Butler Center, named for one of the earliest African American alums who invested in the future of CC, serves as the student center for antiracism, diversity, equity & inclusion. The Butler Center is committed to the cultivation of an antiracist campus through education, advocacy and celebration. Key support and outreach happens through coalition building, identity development, advising, facilitated dialogues, educational workshops and one on one mentoring. We invite you to take advantage of the important opportunities we provide for inclusive student support and engagement.
