Introduction This new release of Architectural Desktop (ADT) 2006 brings an array of new tools, features and a better way of producing documents. Besides the cool new colors, fonts and updated Autodesk logo, you will be very impressed by this release of ADT. If you are familiar with ADT you will appreciate the new features. If you are new to ADT or exploring it as an option you will be impressed by the powerful tasks ADT can perform.

New Features - making your life better Get Formatted The DWG drawing file format has been left unchanged to be compatible with 2004. So there is no need to save back to earlier versions if your consultants and clients are using 2004 or 2005 version products. If you do need to save to an earlier version you can save back to R12 DXF.

Get the Big picture A picture is worth a thousand words. A great new visual feature that has been added to pulldown menus are Icon images.

Who has the CD’s? No more multiple CD’s - Installing the application takes a couple minutes, but you don’t have to switch CD’s, everything now fits on one DVD CD. If your computer cannot read a DVD CD, you can request a non DVD CD’s from your Autodesk reseller.

Custom UI Since ADT is built upon AutoCAD, any new features within AutoCAD can be taken advantage of in ADT. Which is exactly what we can do here… The new “Customize User Interface” allows you to control how the application looks, feels and behaves. Even though this is outside the scope of this class, I suggest you take a look into this feature, because of the great benefits of controlling the applications environment to suite your needs.

Get it Right…click Want to quickly access previous commands. Right click in the drawing area and select “Recent Input” to display a list of recently used commands.

Override Display Display Overrides quickly from the cursor. Access setting from the CAD Manager pulldown | AEC Project Standards | Show Display Overrides.

Tool Catalog Generator Generate tools from a group of drawings automatically and organize them to your requirements. This feature is accessed from the CAD Manager pulldown | Tool Catalog Generator. In this dialog box we have the option to add or create new Catalogs from a Content Source. The source could be either a drawing folder or a specific drawing. Also specific how you want the Tools to be organized: by source drawing, object type and if you want to create Tools in Categories or in Palettes. Select or unselect what styles the tools should be created from a complete list of styles available in the source file.

The scale list settings are controlled under Options | User Preferences - “Edit Scale List” button. Add to the list and type in a name for the new scale. Set the Paper and Drawing units. You have now created a custom scale.

Add it up with calculator No more 3rd party add on calculators or having to buy those expensive scientific, solar powered high tech hand held calculators. A great multi-function calculator is now built in and it is a separate Palette. The calculator can be displayed in a basic mode, see below left example. Or it can be used in an expanded mode by clicking on the circle arrow button to display number pad, scientific equations and units converter. See below, middle and right example.

Change the second column labeled Type from Text to Property. This will change the basic text in our object selection to property type where we can select in the columns to the right what actual property set to be associated with our tag. Publish to 3D DWF Use this to create a 3D DWF of your drawing. Your client or consultants will be able to view your file without the need to have ADT installed on their computer. They just need to down load the FREE 3D DWF Viewer from Autodesk’s website. And now with ability to view the files in 3D there is a greater level of understanding of your project. Also Property Set Data can be included with the DWF, so information pertinent to object can be shared as well.

Curtain Walls - Direct Edit

In earlier releases, creating curtain walls were a bit of a chore. But, we now have the ability to modify and edit a curtain wall, door and window assemblies directly on the screen using grips. We can also add doors and windows to a curtain wall directly and assign overrides to certain cells.

Additional apply curtain walls to the face of mass models. Right click on the curtain wall command and select “Apply Too Properties to” option. A flyout will appear, select “Faces”.

Summary How can something be the same but different and better? Here is how… Some of the tools we have become accustom to using in previous releases of ADT, have been advanced, providing us with more options to complete our projects in a shorter timeframe and with less headaches. This overall allows us to produce a more, fully coordinated set of documents to our clients.
