Background
ThisyearBosniaandHerzegovinaAssociationforCognitiveandBehavioralTherapymarksits10th
yearsofitsexistenceandworkinpromotingCBTinBosniaandHerzegovinaandtheregion.Wesee
thisconferenceasanopportunitytomarkourworkinthefield.
OneofTheEuropeanAssociationforBehaviouralandCognitiveTherapies(EABCT)ApprovedPro-
jectApplicationsfor2012isourInternationalCognitiveBehaviouralTherapyConferenceinBosnia
andHerzegovina.
Socio-economicsituationinWesternBalkanisdifficultanditisnotsurprisingthatmanypsycho-
therapistscannotaffordtogoabroadtoconferencesandtrainings.Travelandaccommodationcosts
requiredtoattendinternationalcongressesareveryhighforourstandard.Forexample,monthly
salaryofUniversityProfessorsis750euros,psychotherapistsisaround500eurosandsoon…Many
psychotherapistsfromWesternBalkancountries,nomatterhowmotivated,aredeprivedofmeeting
withcolleagues,exchangeofexperienceandexpertise.
ThemajorityofprofessionalsfromBosniaandHerzegovinahasbeentrained(orarecurrentlyin
training)inthetheoreticalknowledgeandtherapeuticskillsofBeck’sand/orEllis’approach,aswell
asinspecifictreatmentstrategiesforanxietyanddepressivedisorders.However,manypsychothera-
pistsfromWesternBalkancountriesfeelthatwewouldbenefitfromworkshopsonothereffective
psychologicalapproachesbasedonscientificprinciplesandresearch.ExamplesincludeAcceptance
andCommitmentTherapy,MetacognitiveTherapy,CompassionFocusedTherapy,BehavioralActi-
vation,DialecticalBehaviourTherapy,Mindfulness-BasedCognitiveTherapy...Wealsofeelthatwe
wouldbenefitfromworkshopsontreatmentstrategiesforspecificclinicalproblems(e.g.Psychosis,
AddictionProblems,EatingDisorders,Obesity,IntellectualandDevelopmentalDisabilities,Trau-
ma,BipolarDisorders,ChronicIllness,ChronicPain,IdentityProblems,etc).

BanjaLuka,aswellasnumerousstateandentityinstitutionsofBosniaandHerzegovina.Thecity
liesontheVrbasriverandiswellknowninthecountriesoftheFormerYugoslaviaforbeingfullof
tree-linedavenues,boulevards,gardens,andparks.BanjaLukahasalsoanumberofspringsclose
by.TheareaaroundBanjaLukaismostlywoodland.ThecityitselfisbuiltintheBanjaLukavalley,
whichislocatedatthetransitionbetweenhighandlowmountainareas.
BanjaLukahasacontinentalclimate,withharshwintersandwarmsummers.Thewarmestmonth
oftheyearisJuly,withanaveragetemperatureof21.3°C(70.3°F).
HistoryThehistoryofinhabitationoftheareaofBanjaLukadatesbacktoancienttimes.Thereisasub-
stantialevidenceoftheRomanpresenceintheregionduringthefirstfewcenturiesA.D.,including
anoldfort“Kastel”inthecentreofthecity.SlavssettledintheBalkansinthe6thcentury.During
theOttomanruleinBosnia,BanjaLukawastheseatoftheBosnianpashaluk,andthelordsofthe
regionbuiltwhatisnowadaysthemainstreetofthecityandover200projectsrangingfromartisan
andsalesshopstowheatwarehouses,bathsandmosques.Amongmoreimportantconstructions
weretheFerhadijaandArnaudijamosques.
In1688,thecitywasburneddownbytheAustrianarmy,butitquicklyrecovered.Laterperiodicin-
trusionsbytheAustrianarmystimulatedmilitarydevelopmentsinBanjaLuka,whichmadeitintoa
strategicmilitarycentre.OrthodoxchurchesandmonasteriesnearBanjaLukawerebuiltinthe19th
century.Also,SephardicJewsandTrappistsmigratedtothecityinthe19thcenturyandcontributed
totheearlyindustrializationoftheregionbybuildingmills,breweries,brickfactories,textilefacto-
riesandotherimportantstructures.
Forallitsleadershiptotheregionhowever,BanjaLukaasacitywasnotmoderniseduntilAustro-
Hungarianoccupationinthelate19thcenturythatbroughtwesternisationtoBanjaLuka.Railroads,
schools,factories,andinfrastructureappeared,andweredeveloped,whichledtoamoderncity.A
RomanCatholicFranciscanmonasterywasbuiltinthe20thcentury.
AfterWorldWarI,thetownbecamethecapitaloftheVrbasBanovina,aprovinceoftheKingdom
ofYugoslavia.TheprovincialcapitaloweditsrapidprogresstothefirstBanSvetislavMilosavljević.
Duringthattime,theBanskidvoranditstwinsister,theAdministrationbuilding,theSerbianOr-
thodoxChurchoftheHolyTrinity,atheatreandamuseumwerebuilt.

CultureDuetoitslonghistory,BanjaLukaisrichinculture.BanjaLukaisthehomeofseveralmuseums,
thenationaltheatreandlibrary,bothdatingfromthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury,andofnumerous
othertheatres.
Fortress“Kastel”isoneofBanjaLuka’smainattractions.LocatedontheleftbankoftheVrbasriver,
itgivesaspecificcharmtothecity.Duringthesummer,musicconcertstakeplaceinthefortress.In
thesummer,therearemanyfestivals,withlivebandsplayingattheoutdoorvenues.
TourismThecityandthenaturalbeautiesofthesurroundingareaboastanumberofpopulartouristattrac-
tions.Amongthemostfamousarethepools,thermalsprings,andspasintheregion.Duetoits
parksandover10000treesBanjaLukawasoncenicknamedthe“GreenCity”.Theareaispopular
amongnaturelovers,whilethecitycentreisattractivetotouristsduetoitshistoricalstructures
andmanyrestaurants.OtherattractionsofBanjaLukaaretheBanjHillandawaterfalloftheVrbas
rivernearKrupa.
The Vrbas River was home to the 2005 European Whitewater Rafting Championships and World Championship 2009. The Vrbas Canyon is an ideal place for water adventures like kayaking and rafting.
RaftingontheVrbasriveriscurrentlybecomingpopularamongthetourists.Thecanyonwallsare
hometohawks,eaglesandfalconsaswell.Thehighlandsaredottedwithmanyoldvillagesthatof-
ferastarkcontrasttothebeatoftheBanjaLukacitycenter.
