The Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road section of the 2014 SEMA Show was dedicated to products engineered to tackle life’s harsh-est, and most exciting, terrain. For buyers who understand their customer’s passionate desire to shift into four-wheel drive, exhibitors unveiled hundreds of new SKUs with items

ranging from tonneau covers and bedliners to toolboxes, trailer hitches and suspensions.

The truck segment showed significant growth at the 2014 SEMA Show. The ’14/’15 Chevrolet Silverado was named the Show’s Hottest Truck in the annual SEMA Awards, which honor vehicles most often featured by exhibitors in their booths. Once again, the Jeep Wrangler also reigned supreme as the Show’s Hottest 4x4-SUV. In the New Products Showcase, the trophy for Best New Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive Product went to Bubba Rope for its new Gator-Jaw Soft Shackle. Runner-Ups included Factor 55 for the ProLink Bridle and Omix-ADA/Rugged Ridge for the Exo Top soft top and cargo rack system.

We at Truckers Toy Store had a good year in 2014 and are looking for-ward to a great year in 2015. We are seeing more customers coming in and

educating themselves before they even buy their trucks. However, leveling kits are by far one of our hottest products. This purchase then leads to other add-ons such as rims, tires, fender flares and interior floor protection. We find that a lot of customers accessorize in stages.

Most SUV consumers are buying floor protection, vent visors, hood shields and window tint. Work-truck owners want toolboxes along with a spray-in bedlin-ers, mud flaps and vent visors. Leisure street truckers trend toward functional tonneau covers and also usually purchase floor protection and some kind of bed protection. The off-road guys go for lifts, rims, tires and pocket flares.

With the Internet and so many companies out there, competition has become increasingly difficult. Some shops are producing their own, untested and uncertified products with no prod-uct insurance. This is a serious issue, and all of us need to be aware of the danger and liability that exists. That is why we educate our customers about our prod-ucts. We care, and safety matters.

and benefits. Bed protection, cargo pro-tection, security, improved aerodynam-ics, fuel mileage and improved vehicle aesthetics are all benefits that consumers report as reasons they purchased a ton-neau cover.

Successful retailers who specialize in light-truck accessories have made sure that they are the “experts” in their field, are leaders in customer service and prop-erly display the products they offer. There are great no- to low-cost market-ing methods available today. Dealers who have not already done so need to become, hire or contract social-media experts to properly execute marketing programs using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Foursquare.

The Pro Touring look—older body frame with new performance-product fea-tures—allows consumers to really customize their vehicles, breaking all the

year/make/model standards. The pickup market tends to be young,

working males looking for performance products with a little bit of styling acces-sories. Full families usually own SUVs and are looking for accessories and gad-gets to entertain the passengers and make things easy to transport.

In the off-road segment, younger people want to increase wheel and tire size, lift the truck and put an exhaust on it. These guys want to learn how to off-road and tend to visit local shops that specialize in it.

We are seeing more and more parts dealers hold meets and open houses to engage the community and bring people with like interests together. We are see-ing a new type of social engagement, with hashtags designed for easy search to find market-segmented trends consum-ers want to follow.

We are worried about the ability to off-road due to legislative restrictions. This is limiting the ability to have safe and fun four-wheel rallies that are annual events in some areas. We are also concerned about new CARB laws and restrictions that most aftermarket companies are not ready for.

LED light bars are hot across the board. In both street trucks and SUVs, the trend is toward low center of gravity lift and leveling kits. Being able to

use your truck and SUV in a day-to-day world is the key.

Off-roaders want items that function as well as look cool, such as the Daystar Cam Cans that look great but also hold gear for long trips. Overlanding trips are in now. They let people get out in the world but in less extreme conditions.

Retailers should get back to basics and sell to the customer. Some dealers have become order takers instead of sales people. They know what products would be best for the customers, so giving them that input is the key to success. New products come out every month, and learning about these products will help the dealer and the customer.

People are changing. Most 16-year-olds do not even want driver’s licenses. The advent of everyone being connected is creating a much smaller world. But that does not mean that young people will never drive, and we all need to lis-ten to our new customers to offer the products they want and that fit into their world.

We have some great new platforms to improve on in the next year. The new F-150, the Colorado and the upcoming Titan and Super Duty are great new

trucks for us to put our products on and enhance the performance of.

I personally love the fact that diesel engines are making their way into smaller platforms. I own a diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it! And I like that trend for the Ram 1500 and Colorado in the coming year. I think that these vehicles having diesel engines will allow us even more opportunities to up-fit.

In off-roading, the trend is anything Jeep! Jeep has made a great platform for aftermarket folks to put their parts on, and you don’t see any Jeep going down the road stock.

Technology and land-usage issues will continue to be at the top of the chal-lenges that we face as an industry. It isn’t sexy, but I’d encourage everyone to get involved with ORBA and the SEMA government affairs office as well as stay connected with the vehicle technology team at SEMA.

The latest SEMA pickup market study just came out. It’s a good resource for trends on products as well as buying channels. I’d encourage all SEMA- member dealers to download it.

We’ve seen increases in sales of hard tonneau cov-ers. People who own street trucks are always looking for more storage, and secu-rity is a concern for every-

body. Being able to lock the cover either with a key or through an interlock with the tailgate is a great feature.

SUVs seem to have turned into a soccer-mom market, and those buyers don’t trick them out as much as others have in the past. On the other hand, LED lighting is very big right now in the off-road market. People also seem to be getting back into larger lift kits that allow tires taller than 35 in.

One of the biggest challenges we have in the coming years is motivating the next generation and getting them more involved with automobiles. We also need to be aware of all of the restrictions that the government is putting on our indus-try. And I’m concerned about the grow-ing emphasis on vehicles that think for themselves. This could create a challenge when designing new accessories and how much we can do to our cars and trucks.

With the rebound in the economy and the excitement generated by the new trucks that are coming out, retailers need to think about up-selling. Don’t just take orders; sell to your customers.

While style is a per-sonal choice, functional products are a mainstay in today’s market. Floor-pro-tection products continue to be a strong category,

and lighting has picked up steam, with a number of choices and price points. Lighting offers an off-road element with enthusiasts as well as a safety aspect for a better overall driving experience.

Downsize SUVs and CUVs are a hot market right now. The smaller vehicles are easier to maneuver but still have a stronger look and feel. Plus Baby Boom-ers get more room but don’t see the stigma of a minivan (no disrespect to the minivan customer and market, which has its own strong value.)

Lifting and leveling kits are doing extremely well at the off-road shops I call on. Customers can address the rake of the vehicle and get a slight increase in height but don’t have to worry about what oversize tires can do to the factory ride or have the hassle of getting into a much taller vehicle.

There is increased need for viable margins for the brick-and-motor retail-ers. Allowing partners to cut price is a strategy that has doomed many pre-mier manufacturers. The market is big enough for all of us, and we need to work to maintain a strong business climate.

Coming from the off-road racing and lifted-truck arena, Rigid has always depended on light bars, racks, rollbars and the like for mounting light systems,

so our focus on street trucks involved OE-mountable options such as fog lights, under-car lights and reverse lights in stock bumper locations. That led to a new concept for us: the aftermarket grille with LED lighting, which allowed us to stretch into new territory. If your shop caters to a budget-minded clientele, make sure you have the choices they expect, but also offer some higher quality and price options. If your shop caters to the high-end consumer, the sky is the limit for performance, suspension, lighting, stereo, wheel/tire packages and the entire installation needed to do it right. Retailers should always listen to consumers. They ask for what they want.

In our sector, we see an abundance of Chinese copies, IP knockoffs and even some counterfeits. Quite a few companies and individuals want to capitalize on someone else’s success, but it’s not good for the market in the long run. That said, consumers are becoming more aware of it.

For a while, the younger generation all wanted lifted trucks, but I am starting to get some of the younger kids coming back for the 5- to 7-in. drop kits and

asking about air ride. Most of them are looking for something that is clean and rides like a stock truck.

With gas prices down, we are also seeing full suspension lift kits making a huge comeback. We are doing a lot of the basic 6- and 7-in. kits, but I am getting a large increase in interest in the 8- to 10-in. and even 9- to 11-in. kits. LED light bars with roof mounts are also huge sellers right now. We can’t seem to keep the curved bars in stock.

Our biggest challenge is the threat of deserts and national parks being closed. If our customers don’t have anywhere to go, they won’t need to invest in their vehicles. Off-road events such as the Lucas Oil Regional Race series are a great way for us to get our name in front of new and existing customers. We will always support events in any way we can.

Truck caps and LED lights will continue their growth in 2015 for off-road enthusiasts. The A.R.E. team has taken advantage of those trends

The pickup truck market is ripe right now, with many new products such as the ’15 redesigned Ford F-150 and the ’15 redesigned GM Colorado/Canyon hitting the streets. The Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Titan are also coming down the pipe for the ’16 model year. North American pickup sales grew in 2014, and that growth trend is expected to remain into 2015 and 2016.

The introductions of diesel engines into light-duty truck platforms is very exciting for us here at XDP. Our current mar-ket is a niche focusing on

3/4-ton and 1-ton diesel pickups. While we love to be in a position to help HD pickup truck owners make big power, pull heavier loads, increase fuel economy and stylize their rides to their individual specs, we also look forward to seeing what the ½-ton diesel owners will want to do.

What’s also exciting is the sheer num-bers of possible blank canvases with which to work, as the ½-ton segment makes up the bulk of overall pickup-truck sales. The Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year (TOTY) for 2013 and 2014. This year’s TOTY is the Chevy Colorado, and while it’s not a diesel yet, we hear that it may be soon. Nissan unveiled its Cummins-powered Titan recently as well, and the Toyota Tundra is supposedly next.

Statistically, the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck. While it does not yet offer a diesel version, I would still welcome the owner of a gas version into my showroom. I’m sure I could help him get his truck where he longs for it to be.
