GCPC President’s MessageI hear Tina presented a fine program last month as always. Thank you Tina. Thanks also to Lee Hoar for covering for me while I attended an insurance convention in Seattle and to Bruce Dart for doing the critique. I did a side trip for two days to Vancouver, BC. What a beautiful place. There are lots of things to photograph. I bet I took 40 photos of fruits, vegetables, and flowers at the market at Granville Island, BC, and Pike Market in Seattle. Then there was Mount Rainer and Mount St. Helens. Thank goodness for digital. I can’t imagine how many rolls of film that would be. This was my second time visiting this area. In 1990 I attended my first insurance convention in Seattle and visited the other places, too. Mount St. Helens is of course the most changed. Nice to see the beautiful shimmering trees again. They don’t call it the “Evergreen State” for nothing.

We certainly are a group of travelers. Ann is just back from Switzerland. Jan Keck is ready to leave us to tour again in her home on wheels. Sam, Nancy, Judith, Bill, Karen and Ken have been away. I was also sorry to hear that Yvonne Lloyd is leaving us to move to Idaho. Best wishes, Yvonne. We’ll miss you.

This past Saturday I went to the Canyon to see the immature eagle they had there. A man from Williamsport has it. The bird has a permanent injury. It was a wonderful opportunity to see an eagle very close and get some great shots.

I am hoping we can go on a fall walk soon, but even if we can’t get a group together, be sure to get out there and snap some color.

I’m looking forward to Gary’s program and as always to being amazed at the variety we get on a critique subject.

    Keep Shooting.

Vice President Lee Hoar called the meeting to order. There was no new business or old business.

Lee introduced Tina Tolins and her topic “Alaska – Land of Contrasts.”

Bruce Dart ran the critique in the absence of Sam and Nancy McCaughey.

Critique ThoughtsPast its Prime is this month’s critique topic. Sam volunteered to be a model for this one, but I countered with my usual, “try to get beyond the obvious.” The topic is open for interpretation in any area: animal, vegetable, or mineral. Dissipation or decay can be a fascinating photographic subject. As you prepare your image think about the icon we use in the critiques. Sharpness, contrast, color, brightness, crop, and defects are the elements that get your ideas across as you compose in the frame or suggest tweaks to improve your image in post capture.

Last month’s Mystery Macro (image below, left) is part of a bird bath (full image below, right). No one correctly guessed the mystery. Check out this month’s macro and send your guesses to [email protected].

I invite you to send me your macros (the more mysterious the better) for publication using the format for the digital critique.
