Understanding The Biblical

Lessons of Holy Week By Pastor Terry Sharpe

Holy Week is the period of time before Easter

when Christians become reacquainted with the

most pivotal events in Jesus’ life. It begins the

Sunday prior to Resurrection Sunday (Easter)

with Jesus’ Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem on

Palm Sunday. This event marks the occasion when

Jerusalem welcomed Jesus into the city and

proclaimed him as the entering Messiah.

Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m., Hatcher Church will

celebrate in the festivities and events surrounding

this special day with the Palm Sunday

Processional Service. Our church family will

relive this most joyful occasion that marks the

beginning of Holy Week. Everyone is encouraged

to arrive early to receive palm leaves and branches.

Wednesday, April 17, at 6 p.m., we will be using

a special Holy Week Study Guide which will

provide an understanding of the life and events

Jesus experienced each day during the last week of

His life. Each day, through the eyes of Jesus, we

will see where he went, watch what he did, and

listen to the last lessons He taught His disciples.

We will see the crowds as they came near to hear

His final teachings, as well as view the significant

and personal care He gave to those in great need.

The Study Guide may also be used as a personal

and daily devotional resource for the entire week.

Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m., Hatcher will have

the opportunity to experience the symbolic Jewish

Passover Seder Meal. This will be served in the

Fellowship Hall and everyone will have the

opportunity to experience the tastes, textures, and

fragrances of the foods and enjoy the elements and

meanings of the original Passover Experience.

Baptist know this as the Maundy Thursday

Service, the service for Christians where Jesus

offers the Bread and Cup of the New Covenant.

Everyone is encouraged to have their dinner meal

prior to the Seder Meal, as it is a mere sampling of

the Jewish Foods used in the Seder.

Friday, April 19, at Noon, the Tenebrae Service

or the Service of Darkness (Baptist usually know

this as Good Friday Service) will take place. The

last words and sentences Jesus spoke from the

cross will be read in sequential order, interspersed

with hymns, scripture, prayer, and the service will

conclude with the symbolic sealing of the tomb.

A Seven-Candle Menorah is used in this worship

service and, when each of the seven last words that

Jesus spoke from the cross are read, the candles

will be extinguished one by one until the sanctuary

is void of all candle light. The service is then

concluded by the Pastor slamming the heavy Pulpit

Bible shut with force enough that the sound can

echo through the sanctuary, which is symbolic of

the sound of the Sealing of Jesus' Tomb.

Pastor Search Update Wayne Duke, Committee Chairperson

Your Pastor Search Committee has spent the past

few weeks arranging Sunday visits to our

narrowed candidate pool. The visits have ranged

from places that are local to distances that are five

hours away. These visits have been primarily

unannounced, and the search team tried to remain

as inconspicuous as possible, so as not to draw any

attention.

We will hold our next meeting on Sunday, April 7,

to discuss these visits, how we viewed the

prospective candidates in their present churches,

and what are the next steps concerning these

individuals. Divine discernment is desperately

needed as we consider whether any of these

candidates are the right one for Hatcher. Please

continue your prayers for this group as we

meet. My thanks to the committee members who

willingly made trips to these places to hear the

candidates.

Pastor Sharpe wants you to know that he cares

deeply for each one of you. He will be keeping

regular office hours (except for the occasional

emergency) to assist you with whatever is on

your heart. He will be in the office Mondays

through Thursdays, but the hours may change

each week. Be sure to watch the weekly

bulletin for hours for the coming week. You

may also call the church office at

804-266–9696 to make an appointment.

2019 Easter Offering Project to Refurbish Sanctuary Windows

The annual Easter offering provides an opportunity for

us to undertake a special project for which funds are

not budgeted. In 2018, we were able to install new

windows in the East Wing.

For 2019 the, Finance Committee and Buildings

& Grounds Team have selected to focus on the

exterior of the stained glass windows in our sanctuary.

You may have noticed the peeling paint on the trim.

We propose to remove the Plexiglas from the 10

windows to reglaze, scrape, and paint all wood

surfaces. We will then re-install the Plexiglas.

The total cost for the 10 windows will be

approximately $7,500 or $750 each. Easter offerings

may be placed in the offering plates on Sunday or may

be mailed to the church office at 2300 Dumbarton

Road, Henrico, VA 23328. Be sure to put the words

“Easter Offering” in the note section of the check.

Donations Needed for CDC

Teacher Appreciation Dinner

The CDC Teacher Appreciation Dinner is an

annual event held to honor our Child Development

Center teachers for their dedicated service. This

year’s event will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2018,

at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

As in the past, the CDC Committee is asking for

the church’s assistance in providing side dishes for

the banquet. Needed items include: bread, two-liter

soft drinks, pasta dishes, baked beans, meatballs,

vegetable dishes, and potato and other salads.

Desserts are not needed, as parents provide those.

Small cash contributions are helpful towards

providing other necessary items.

Please email Sharon Vecchione at
