From the Principal . . . .

Greetings Bulldog Parents!

The end of the school year is just around the corner! With thankfulness for my teachers and staff,

and students and parents, I can look back on this school year and say we have a lot of successes to

celebrate! Teachers and students have been working hard to make the most of their learning op-

portunities and experiences. We hope despite the busyness of spring schedules you’ll continue to

partner with us as you encourage your student to stay focused and finish strong!

Here are a few specifics to celebrate…We’re proud to announce that 7th grader Coren Paige won

the EACS Digital Literacy Contest for all EACS middle school students. She did a terrific job

with a video centered around EACS’s ―Dream It. Do It‖ slogan. Seventh grader Leon Byerly won

the EACS Art Contest for all middle school students in the district. His creation will be on display

in the administration building for years to come! We ended the third quarter with 357 students

qualifying for the final Striving For Excellence celebration. March’s Family Fun Night was well

attended by over 100 families and we plan to make it an annual tradition. And I hope you have

taken note of the improvements in the appearance of the school--The Art Club and parent volun-

teers have partnered together to make numerous aesthetic changes. The 8th grade field trip to Jun-

ior Achievement’s Finance Park was a huge success. Students had a great time and also got a dose

of the real world for students as they experienced hands-on the financial decisions adults make

daily.

As summer approaches, please note that Jump Start, a two-week summer school offering remedia-

tion in language arts and math, will be offered to select students. We have about 90 spots availa-

ble for this summer school program. If your student is eligible, you should have received a mailing

earlier this month. Please make sure your application is completed and returned by May 23rd to

take advantage of this opportunity.

and gave their best effort on ISTEP will participate in their choice of basketball, kickball, movie

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS

I would like to thank the New Haven Middle School Student Council for another successful year. We’ve had a great time working together. The stu-dents worked very hard on many projects this year. Some of our representatives helped at the New Ha-ven Parks Dept. Breakfast with Santa. Student Coun-cil made loom bracelets to sell during Christmas time. We were able to give the money we raised to Charis House. Student Council also participated in Cover the City, where they collected coats and blan-kets to pass out to those in our community. Our Val-entine’s Day Dance was a huge success and A LOT OF FUN! We rented a photo booth for kids to have their pictures taken together as groups, etc. The stu-dents LOVED it! We’ve had two book fair so far this year and our BUY ONE GET ONE FREE book fair starts Monday, May 12 – Friday, May 16. Our book fairs this year were very successful, and we are look-ing forward to another great book fair with it being a buy one get one free!!! --Thank you all for your sup-port! Student Council also had the opportunity to participate in Paper Gator Recycling to help enrich the community by giving back. Our Talent Show is on the last day of school, June 4th. This is always a fun time and enjoyed by many. 2014-2015

Athletic information for 2014-2015 has not been finalized. Please check our web site frequently for

information regarding summer conditioning and tryouts in August for: football (7th & 8th graders), vol-

leyball (7th & 8th graders), and cross country (6th, 7th, & 8th graders). Eligibility to participate in

NHMS sports includes a review of 2013/2014 4th quarter grades (for current 6th & 7th graders)

and a completed physical form for all athletes. Students with 2 or more F’s in 4th quarter

classes will not be eligible to participate in football, volleyball or cross country next fall.

Cheerleader Tryouts Cheerleading practices will be held May 19th, 20th, and 21st. There will

be a one day tryouts on May 22nd. Practices and tryouts will be from

3:00—5:30 p.m. in the west gym. You

will need to have a current physical on file in order to practice and tryout.

There will be a parent meeting for

those who make the squad on May 28th at 6:00 p.m in the cafeteria.

College Preparation

People who pursue postsecondary education are likely to earn more and be more

fulfilled in their career choices than those whose learning ends with a high school

diploma.

The recent recession reinforced the reasons your child should plan for postsec-

ondary education. According to the Wall Street Journal, college graduates were

less likely to be laid off during the recession. Those who were laid off were hired

back more quickly than people without a college degree.

It’s never too early to start talking to your children about their plans for the future. So why not include college in that

conversation, even for kindergarteners? The earlier those children are exposed to college as a viable option for them, the

more likely they are to factor college into their own plans. Many college graduates share that ―it was never an option for

me NOT to go to college. . . it was an expectation of my parents that I would go.‖

Conversations about college with young children can be as simple as mentioning the different things that people with

college degrees can do. By middle school, eligible children should be encouraged to sign up to be Twenty-First Centu-

ry Scholars http://www.in.gov/21stcenturyscholars and parents can begin to explore college-prep courses.

The Web is filled with college-readiness resources that can help you spark your young child’s interest in college and

vocational education. Encourage your middle-school child to think about careers and help your high schooler find the

right fit and apply for admission.

You want to do whatever you can to make sure your child succeeds in school and in life. And you know that means getting involved in his/her school. But where do you start? We can help with that. Here is a place to start:

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 2014-2015 SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The Indiana State Department of Health is requiring the following additional immunizations for school attendance:

NEW for the 2014-2015 School Year

Two (2) doses of Hepatitis A is required for Kindergarten.

Two (2) doses of MCV4 (Meningococcal conjugate) is required for 12th grade.

Other immunizations that must be current prior to the school year

Two (2) doses of Varicella (chickenpox), or evidence of immunity, for all students in grades Kindergarten through

12TH grade.

One (1) dose of MCV4 is required for 6th grade.

One (1) dose of Tdap (Tetanus & Pertussis) is required for 6th grade.

See your physician for needed immunizations or you may go to:

The Allen County Department of Health, located at 4813 New Haven Avenue, at the corner of

New Haven and Meyer Road. Children under age 18 need to be accompanied by a parent or legal

guardian (with appropriate consent). Children eligible under the Vaccines for Children program

may qualify for free vaccine. For all others, there is a $9 administration fee per vaccine in addi-

tion to the cost of the vaccine. Cash, debit or credit cards accepted. Call 449-7514 to schedule an

appointment or for additional information.

Super Shot also offers immunizations at various locations throughout Allen County. There is an

$8 fee per shot; Medicaid is accepted. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. Your

child’s shot record is required and he/she must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
