WHO August Brunch a Theatrical Success

A little bit of theatre came to Heritage Oaks on August 20 as The Hourglass Players presented two short plays at the Women of Heritage Oaks Brunch. The plays, All I Want is the Recipe, which featured Tamara Friedman and HO resident Jo Rake, and Gin and Tonic, which featured Tamara and HO resident Geoff Rake, generated much laughter and enthusiastic applause.

The 68 ladies in attendance enjoyed a brunch of quiches, cucumbers and tomatoes, fruit compote, and muffins prepared by the brunch committee chaired by Sharon Fowler and Jo Rake. A surprise addition of wine was available for those who desired. “Best Actress” awards of rose bouquets were awarded to five lucky door prize winners as a conclusion to the program. Jo Rake, as Marge, is giving a recipe to Tamara

Friedman (on phone) as Sue in All I Want is the Recipe at the August WHO brunch

Rules for Seniors (First in a 3-part series)

Some of us have reached our golden years, and some of us have not. But these suggestions should be read by everyone. They have been collected from many a senior, each with his or her own piece of advice. Some you know, some may surprise you, and some will remind you of what’s important. So read well, share with your loved ones, and have a great day and a great life!

1. It's time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don't just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard earned capital. Warning: This is also a bad time for an investment, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries and this is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

2. Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don't feel bad spending your money on yourself. You've taken care of them for many years, and you've taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs, they have to earn their own money.

3. Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor; get tested even when you're feeling well. Stay informed.

4. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together.

5. Don't stress over the little things. You've already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don't let the past drag you down and don't let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.

6. Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: "A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection."

7. Be proud, both inside and out. Don't stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

(To be continued . . .) A Little Reminder Are your shrubs, bushes and tree limbs growing out onto the street creating a line-of-site issue? Please remind your lawn care provider to cut back any shrub, bush and tree limb that may be causing a line-of-site concern. Special attention is noted at intersections and driveways. Nothing should be growing over the curb and into the street. Fall is a great time to cut and trim back.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON POKEROn Friday, between the hours of noon and 3:00 p.m., the clubhouse ballroom transforms into the "Golden Nugget Casino" of Heritage Oaks, but only the poker room will be visual when entering the main room of the clubhouse. Ah, yes, the social entertainment that happens around a poker table lives on forever, and for us living in this "Active Adult Community" the thought of turning $5.00 into $10.00 during a 3-hour span is much too inviting. This same scenario has happened during the past 5+ years in our clubhouse.

When you can sit at a table with "The Bully" or "Whatever" or "Omaha 8 Only" or "Bet A Nickel" or "Why Does Everyone Pick On Me" or "27 Earl's Way" or "27 Gary's Way - The Right Way" or "Only Deal 5 Stud - Any Low" or "7 Card - Any Low - Roll'em" or "10 Card" or with any of the other 10+ players that show up to play their game of poker each week, you have a tremendous social event for 3 hours. Currently, there are 19 Heritage Oaks residents that are on the active attendance and email address list: Terry Blackburn, Mike Bogan, Ernie Bolles, Jim Chaille, Bob Fadely, Bill Froude, Chuck Helmka, Reiko Hensley, Gary Herzik, Earl Heuszel, Jerry Journey, Ron Landgraf, Bob McCormick, Don Prifogle, David Rock, Wayne Schravrda, Tom Sopko, Jerry Weide and Frank Zazula.

Over the last five years (260 Fridays) it is interesting to note that Ernie Bolles has played for 227 weeks, Bob McCormick for 202 weeks, Jim Chaille for 199 weeks and Earl Heuszel for 198. In addition to those four, Terry Blackburn, Mike Bogan, Bob Fadely, Bill Froude, Gary Herzik, Jerry Journey, Tom Sopko and Frank Zazula are also part of the initial group.

Usually the tables and chips are ready between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m., so the first five to sign in start the initial poker game. When the attendance gets to 10 players, the second table is ready to start with the last five players to sign in. So, if you were worried about being on time, don't. You are never late; you dictate when you want to get started, as you are assigned a table when you show up and sign in. Five dollars is the starting amount to sign in and to take a seat. There are a variety of games played, so there is no boredom during the afternoon. The cards speak for themselves, so if you are in it to the last, lay your cards down and the whole table will make your best poker hand(s) – in a very friendly atmosphere. No "wild" cards nor the jokers are played and the games are kept simple for all to enjoy. The last poker hand is dealt prior to 3:00 p.m. After the counting of chips, the payout to each player, and finally, putting the clubhouse back to its original layout, the group is ready to leave by 3:15 p.m. All that’s left is the celebrating and for one player (who wins quite often) that means taking his wife to Dos Salsas to celebrate.

The big screen TV is tuned to the weekly golf tourna-ment and whether it is a LPGA, PGA or USGA event does not matter. If you have a "special" sporting event to watch, let us know.

Come out and watch the games played for a couple of weeks, if that makes you more comfortable before laying down the “big bucks.” For more information, please contact Gary Herzik at: [email protected] or (512)863-2418 or ask a neighbor who plays poker each week.

Some of the Friday Poker players ready for the next game.

Attention: Crafters and Artisans!

We are looking for more vendors for our annual Heritage Oaks Craft Fair to be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015. Shoppers like a variety of handcrafted items and art mediums. Please call Sheila Tomschin at 512-943-4652 or Jane Gainder at 512-943-4840 if you have any interest or questions in selling your unique creations.

With charge cards in hand, the ladies of Needle and Thread enjoyed a morning of shopping at Poppy’s Quilt Shop and Sheep at the Wheel, a new yarn shop located next door to Poppy’s on Williams Drive. The ladies were impressed with the quality of merchandise and friendliness of employees at both stores. Of course, the sale section was the most popular area in each shop as several ladies took advantage of the special pricing on fabric and yarn. Each store had several project samples that inspired everyone to buy the required yarn or fabric in hopes of squeezing just one more project into their already busy schedules.

After shopping, the ladies went to Longhorn Steak House for a leisurely lunch and discussed upcoming events in Needle and Thread. Enjoying the outing were Jane Hackley, Jo Rake, Debbie Cox, Marilyn Richards, Sharon Hedrick, Sandy Cox, Glenda Deal and Sherrill McCullough.

In September the group will work on quilts for the Linus Connection, a local charity that helps children and women in crisis. Pre-packaged fabric kits will be available at the meeting on Monday, September 14, for anyone wanting to make a small quilt for this worthy cause.

In October the group will make final preparations for their annual Arts and Crafts Show that will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Anyone interested in being a vendor at the show should contact Jane Gainder (512-943-4840) or Shelia Tomschin (512-943-4652) for details.

The Knitting/Crochet group met and learned how to knit a new pattern called Cantaloop, an easy pattern just perfect for the changing Texas weather. The patterns used by the group are quick, easy, patterns that make nice gifts for the upcoming holidays. If anyone is interested in knitting or crocheting, please join them on the 4th Thursday of each month at the Clubhouse from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas Brunch is Underway!

It is hard to believe we are thinking of Thanksgiving and Christmas in August! Thanksgiving is only 95 days away. The Holiday Season planning is underway at Heritage Oaks of Georgetown. A committee has been formed to begin planning the Third Consecutive Thanksgiving Dinner for the residents of Heritage Oaks, and they welcome you to join them. If you are interested in participating in the planning process please contact Linda Zazula at [email protected] or Helen Klenz at [email protected].

On November 26th, a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner is planned and participants will be asked to bring side dishes and salads. The turkey, pork roast, dressing, potatoes and gravy will be prepared by volunteers. A donation of $4.00 per person will cover the cost of the main course and dessert.

The second annual Christmas Brunch will be held on Christmas Day at 10:00 a.m. It will also be a shared meal with all participants providing the menu items. Suggestions are breakfast casseroles, seasonal breads and rolls, quiche and fruit. You are welcome to share your family’s traditional one-dish breakfast favorite as well.

Updates and pertinent information will follow in future Nutshell editions, via email memos, postings at the mail boxes and announcements at Heritage Oaks events. Please contact Linda Zazula or Helen Klenz at the email addresses above if you have questions or would like to volunteer.

HOGGS Play for Charityby Bob Drewitt

On Monday, August 3rd, eight of the Heritage Oaks Golf Gaggle (aka HOGGS) participated in the World's Largest Golf Outing benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project at the ColoVista Country Club in Bastrop. For some of the HOGGS, this is the third straight year they have played since ColoVista re-opened.

The World’s Largest Golf Outing (WLGO) was created in 2011 when Peter Hill, CEO of Billy Casper Golf, said, "You know what would be really cool? Having all of our golf courses hold a golf outing on the same day." He then said, "You know what would be even cooler? Having this event make a difference." And so WLGO was born by combining two of the company’s passions – playing golf and giving back. The Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) was then chosen as the event’s charitable partner for their tireless efforts and work to support our injured service men and women who come back from war. For this event held in August $760,000 was raised. Since 2011, WLGO and its participants have raised over $2 million for WWP and are still counting!

The eight HOGGS who played were Don Prifogle, Ward McCarly, Fred Disch, Ray Nelson, Ralph Hall, Joe Pope, Bob Drewitt (Head HOGG) and Tom Fowler. This is an annual event, so watch emails around this time next year if you have an interest in both playing golf AND supporting America's Wounded Warriors.

Do you neeD to license your pet?As reported recently in the Georgetown View, all dogs and cats living in Georgetown are required to be licensed each year through Animal Services. You can get a ticket and be fined for failing to license your dogs and cats. The following is an excerpt directly from the City of Georgetown Animal Shelter Site to support the need for licensing:

Licensing is not the same thing as a Rabies Vaccination tag, but a separate tag and certificate. Since Animal Services does not have access to the records of Veterinarians, licensing is the only practical way for Animal Services to enforce Rabies Vaccination requirements which are necessary to keep the deadly disease of Rabies under control.

One of the many benefits of a pet license tag on the collar of your cat or dog is twenty four hour a day, seven day a week identification of the pet in case it is picked up by Animal Services, especially if the pet has been seriously injured. Hit by a car, for example. It can easily mean the difference between life and death for the pet if Animal Services personnel can quickly locate the pet’s owner.

Another benefit, City Code requires identified pets to be held at the Animal Shelter for 7 days for the owner to claim the pet. After only 72 hours, an unidentified pet can be placed into a new home or humanely killed. Finally, a pet license is a “Free Ride Home”. A pet is given one free ride during the year the license is valid. This may be an actual ride to be delivered home by an Animal Control Officer if this is practical, or it may simply mean that no impoundment fees will be charged to the owner when the owner claims their pet from the Animal Shelter.

Most local Veterinary offices sell City Pet Licenses. The major requirement for getting a pet licensed is to have proof of a current Rabies Vaccination. Spayed or neutered pets, pets that have been altered so that they cannot reproduce, are licensed at a discounted rate of $5 per year. Unaltered dogs and cats are licensed at a rate of $20 per year.

Seniors (age 65 and older) can receive one free pet license for a cat or dog that has been altered so that it cannot reproduce. Licenses can be purchased or renewed through the mail, at most local Veterinary Clinics and at the Animal Shelter at 110 W L Walden Drive.

At Home and Abroad

Patsy Blackburn recently toured through Alaska with some of her grandchildren and segwayed in Austin with Terry, their son and his children.

Dean and Anna Lowary with their grown children, Fred Burris and Nikki Koski, took a “selfie” while they were underway moving Dean’s new boat. They picked the boat up in Racine, Wisconsin, traversing Lake Michigan to the Calumet Harbor in Chicago, then traveling down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers to St. Louis. The boat will reside there for the next year. Oh, the stories that will be told!

This is just one of many old castles Dennis and Helen Klenz saw on their trip to Ireland. It is easy to see why it is called the Emerald Isle as it rained nearly every day. Ireland is truly a trip back in time.

Fern and Ollie Ragan are at Lauritzen Gardens "Gone Wild" exhibit of wildlife sculptor Dan Ostermiller which features 30 bronze works throughout the gardens and conservatory in Omaha, Nebraska. It was an outstanding art exhibit along with permanent works and flowers, plants, an outside small gauge railroad and much more!

The primary method of communicating information to and between homeowners at Heritage Oaks is through the internet. This is the quickest and most economical way. Homeowners are encouraged to use the internet, but basic information is available on the bulletin board in the clubhouse and coming events are posted at the mail box kiosks.

“in a Nutshell”

The newsletter is published monthly, both electronically and printed. The current issue of the "in a Nutshell" will be emailed to every Heritage Oaks homeowner as soon as it is complete. Archived issues can be found by choosing "Information" and selecting "in a Nutshell”. Black and white printed copies are available to a small number of homeowners who do not have access to a computer and can be found in the Hobby/Game/Library room. Please drop 50 cents into the can provided to help cover printing costs.

Also, those homeowners who do not have access to a computer can have copies delivered to their homes for an annual fee for printing. Contact: Anna Lowary, 943-9684, or at [email protected].

Every resident is encouraged to write articles and provide photos that would be of interest to the community. Please submit your materials by the 23rd of the month to: [email protected]..

Bulletin Boards

The Official Bulletin Board is in the hallway leading to the Hobby/Game/Library room in the clubhouse. It includes Heritage Oaks Homeowner Association notices and postings, monthly calendar, list of activities and contacts, and a collection of announcements of coming events. There are also bulletin boards at each mail box kiosk that include the coming events. Events chairpersons will post the mailbox messages. If you have an announcement to be placed on the bulletin board in the clubhouse, place it in the wooden mailbox in the office.
