Welcome to all new High Legh residents and readers of this Newsletter. Building friendships and combating loneliness is a very important component in developing our sense of well being. Living in a small village can provide a very real sense of neighbourliness, but how can you start getting to know your neighbours? This Newsletter aims to bring together information about the many different activities that are going on in High Legh – that are there for you to explore, and I hope, enjoy at least some of them!

So, take the plunge – come and have a coffee or a glass of wine. You could enjoy a BBQ, an exercise class, make a scarecrow, help serve teas and cakes – in our Village Hall. We try to encourage events for people of all ages and different interests.

The Big High Legh Weekend on 13th/14th May offers a great opportunity to invite you and your friends and family, perhaps from further afield, to come and sample some of the great activities we enjoy in High Legh. You can very easily become an active participant, and maybe even an award winner, if you create a scarecrow!

There are lots of sport, dance and exercise opportunities in High Legh. Our village hall is building a great reputation as THE place for dance and exercise classes with a comfortable airy hall, spotlessly clean wooden floor, comfortable chairs (when you need a rest) good access for music systems, free parking, nice toilets and the kitchen for refreshments. So do make use of the opportunities, and encourage more classes to come to and flourish in High Legh.

You can always be an event organiser yourself – perhaps hire the Village Hall for a family party, or work with your friends to create some fun events that you can open to the whole community! Our Community Association is a registered charity which works with others to create events for residents of all ages. We operate and improve the Village Hall, to provide a facility for organisations and families to use as your meeting place, dance, party, training or sales event venue.

Please send me stories about High Legh people, activities and local events that High Legh residents might find interesting. This could be celebrations, congratulations, thanks or memories.

This Newsletter is written, published and delivered to High Legh homes, through the voluntary efforts of members of the High Legh Community. It can also be downloaded from www.highlegh.org.uk . It aims to keep residents informed about the breadth of activities that take place within our village. If you have information about a local social event or news that may be of interest to High Legh people, and you would like it to go onto that website, or this Newsletter email [email protected] or ring me.

The deadline for the Summer Newsletter is: Sunday 25th June, 2017

Village Hall Management CommitteeWe have made further progress in the kitchen with the fitting of glass splashbacks. Not only do they look good but it also makes cleaning so much easier and the worktop area more hygienic. Improvements will continue to be made as required and if you have any suggestions I would be pleased to hear them.

All regular Hall users have now signed the standard agreement forms and have been issued with terms and conditions of hire. New Sunday Teas people will also be as asked to sign an agreement form as a condition of their participation.

We arranged for a fixed wiring test to be carried as part of our efforts to ensure that the Village Hall meets all health and safety requirements. We have contracted the painting of the outside to a local painter and decorator. Work will start this year but may not be concluded until next year.

We have acquired a portable projector for the use of all Village Hall user groups. There will be certain changes taking place over the next few months. We are aware that the chairs and tables take up a lot of space in the Side Hall and are difficult to stack and manoeuvre. We will sample new chairs and tables as part of a test marketing exercise and to make life easier for those people who have to handle them.

And finally…Contact Helen Wright on 07703 194052 or drop an email to [email protected] (please note the change of email address) and arrange to have a look round and see how the Village Hall can meet your needs. You may be pleasantly surprised. Special rates are available for High Legh residents and charities.Mike WalkerChair of Village Hall Management Committee ([email protected])

High Legh Pre-SchoolThis year we celebrated our 45th anniversary with afternoon tea at the Village hall, which was the original building for the Primary School and Preschool Nursery. Nursery started as a private enterprise in 1971 by Mary Turner. After 4 years Mary was struggling to fund it, and there was concern that High Legh would lose this facility. The Community Association

appointed Mike Hosker and the late Keith Knowlton to purchase the business from Mary. Money was borrowed and the loan was guaranteed by Joyce Brow, Martin West and the late Jim Margison. Angela Bradley took over the running of the Nursery School and gradually the Pre-school evolved into the charity format that we have today.

Preschool was only open mornings from 9 until 12 and there was no government funding in those days. There were about 60 children on roll and they typically attended from 3 years of age. Mary Ballantyne worked at Preschool in the 70s and told me that her husband, as Village Hall Treasurer, helped create the room above the kitchen that became the Preschool room. Some days there were so many children that the hall, the side room and the upstairs room were all used!

We have had three events so far and as they are proving very popular we have decided to continue. We have to change to a Wednesday as there is a new regular user on Thursday mornings now. Dates are: 26 April, 24 May, 28 June and 26 July. 10.30 – 12.00 at the Village Hall.

Thank you to all the helpers and bakers. It’s great to see so many people there. We are always wanting cakes so if you are able to make a cake please let us know. We will pay £2 per cake.

Our Friendship mornings are free as are the cake, coffee and tea But we’ve heard some people say that they would like to pay

If that is what you’d like to do, then there will be a donations cup for you But most important of all is that you join us at the Village Hall

Thank you to High Legh Community Association for funding these events and to Jeff Evans from High Legh Community Transport for providing transport. If you would like transport, please contact Doreen.

Hilary Kenyon, Sue Young, Penny Cory and Dorothy Swann were all staff at the preschool during this time. Alicia Elbourne was one of the first members of teaching staff and remained at the preschool until 2003, some 30 years! Dorothy Swann was a teacher at the Preschool who played the piano at Preschool concerts. Dorothy left to have a child and Andrea Hosker joined as Deputy Supervisor. Andrea originally came just to help out, but stayed for 18 years!

Angela Bradley ran the Preschool for 21 years until a bad back prevented her from carrying on, and Ruth Walton took on the role of Supervisor. During this time the Preschool had the support of Sue Minaeian, Jackie Baguley, Marilyn Ridler, Caroline Braddock, Carol Goodwin, Eileen Knowlton, Jan Littler, Penny Cory, Denise Growney, Deborah Dillon, Rachel McKee and Jo Cammack.

In 2005 after teaching the children for 10 years, Ruth Walton handed the Supervisors role to Yvonne Edwardson. Pre-school numbers were decreasing and action was needed to keep it running effectively. The decision was taken to allow the children to stay longer have their lunch, and stay for some afternoons. At this time the logo was created by Sally Harrison and the first of our annual balls took place to help raise funds. Staff members who supported the children during this time were Melissa Marshall, Peta Green, Abigail Smith, Sarah McClean, Michelle Samsa and Sarah Gregory. Penny Cory continued to work at the preschool until 2008, 18 years.

In 2006 Pre-school moved to High Legh Primary school which provided the children with far more opportunities. The staff enjoyed not having to set up and put away equipment every day. Sue Corden became the deputy and alongside Sarah McClean, Michelle Samsa, Gill Lippiat and Penny Cory Preschool continued to flourish for another 10 years. Nichola Watson, Becky Harris, Jean McGowan, Becca Ernill, Jo Ward, Sam Saunders and Kirsty Wilson joined the team over this period.

Now 45 years on, Yvonne Edwardson continues to run the Preschool with Sue Corden and Jean McGowan. Becca Ernill, Lisa Hughes, Becky Harris, Samantha Tennant, Emma Greenwood and Jo Ward also make up our fantastic team. Our recent Ofsted inspection in March awarded us an OUTSTANDING grading. A huge achievement and a lovely recognition of all the hard work the committment the staff make to ensure that High Legh is such a happy place to work and play for staff and children alike.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the many parents that have served on the committee over the years. I am sure we have raised many thousands of pounds to ensure the Preschool continues to meet it’s running costs. We are reliant on these funds to remain open, and we are very grateful for the time and effort that each of you have given to help us achieve that goal.

And finally, thank you to the children. Past, present and future. Each of you is unique and fabulous in your own way. We hope we have created some lovely memories at High Legh.

Yvonne Edwardson 01925 751584 [email protected] www.highleghpreschoolnursery.co.uk

High Legh Primary School

We have had many highlights over the past few months Our soccer team won the local small school football competition; we then went through to the county finals and won the shield. Wow-a fantastic achievement. Our team then made the long trek to Northumberland and played admirably. They came fourth –what a team!

Our children have a wide range of experiences to enhance their learning; trips to Chester Zoo, a sleepover in an observatory, a community breakfast for all, a grandparents assembly, a Creepie Crawlie show, a trip to Delamere forest to find Stickman as well as a fun packed world book day.

Mrs Forshaw (our Class 3 teacher) worked with a group of parents and set up an Innovation Competition. The competition was to design a cleaning implement that would clean hospitals. The children were amazed by Mrs Booth who both parent and a scientist she inspired their designs by showing them how modern technology will change in the future. The children came up with fabulous designs and prototypes. The British company gtech kindly supplied our school with 2 amazing cordless vacuum cleaners as first prizes and our wonderful PTA supplied prizes of robots and electronic games.

The winners of the county trophy for small schools soccer.

Well Done High Legh!

Recently we were informed that the trees outside the school gates belonged to school. We had a tree survey to look at the 25 trees in question as no one had any idea they belonged to us until I got in touch with land registry. Many of the trees in question had self-seeded over 20 years ago and were fighting for light; others were in poor condition. We ended up having half of the trees cut down; fortunately many of the oaks still stand and the lane still retains its peaceful charm. Thank you to the local residents who had to put up with the noise of a chainsaw for three days.

School Funding I hope you have been made aware of the New National Funding Formula consultation that has been undertaken by the DFE. The purpose of the new formula is to ensure that all children across England get a fair amount of money for their education. However under this new formula Cheshire East goes from being in the 40 worse funded authorities to the 4th bottom (out of 150) This means our school will lose £65,000 out of its budget every year from 2018-19. Our governors, staff and parents have been fantastic in opposing the formula. For us it means that our pupils will have £4,179 a year spent on their education and pupils in nearby authorities will have £6,483 spent on them over the year. The formula becomes a postcode lottery. If the formula goes ahead in its current format it not only has implications for education in Cheshire East but will affect businesses and prosperity in the area. Recently I met with a group of head teachers and our MP George Osbourne and he is rallying members in parliament to stop the formula and to make changes which will be more favourable and fair. If you would like to find out more and to sign a petition please go to www.schoolcuts.org.uk.

We are currently looking for a mid- day assistant. This would be someone who would help supervise children during lunch times in the hall; as well as supporting play time outside. The hours would be 11.50am -1pm every day. If you are interested please give our school a ring or e-mail [email protected]

We are always happy for volunteers to listen to readers or support our gardening. If you have any time and would like to help please do get in touch.

Something for everyone at Lymm Festival Summer 2017!The line-up for this year’s Summer Festival has been announced and promises something for everyone. Running from Thursday 22nd June to Sunday 2nd July, the Festival is packed with music, comedy, arts, spoken word, outdoor events and plenty for children and families.

Headlining the programme is Gyles Brandreth, broadcaster and author, who will be presenting his one-man show and the comedy continues with stand-up comedian Alex Boardman at Festival Comedy Club. Local-born humanitarian, author Terry Waite will be talking about his new book and there will be poems, storytelling and more.

As always, there will be lots of music at the Festival, kicking off with that “Festival Favourite” the 60s Tribute Night starring David John Dee, this year with “Not Fade Away”. Throughout the Festival there will be all types of music so there must be something there for every taste.

The ever-popular LymmFest on Saturday 24th June features music at four venues around the village all for one wristband entry. There will be blues, rock, folk and indie on offer so make sure that you take in some of each during the evening. There will also be some Popular Opera featuring baritone Jacob Phillips and lots more choral and orchestral music throughout the eleven day Festival period.

The Festival opens, as usual, with the FoodFest and Street Fun right in the heart of the village on Thursday 22nd June – and let’s hope that the weather is better than last year! Other favourites include a family garden party at Lymm Hall, Historic Transport Day, Open Gardens and Lymm Artists’ Exhibition.

There are some new events as well. Lymm Oughtrington Park Cricket Club is the venue for “Murder on the Terrace”, an open-air “whodunnit?” and there will be a children’s fun day with workshops and storytelling. Plus an adult author event and a children’s author event and workshop and…..and....the list goes on and on!

Full details will be appearing over the coming weeks on the Festival website at lymmfestival.org.uk as well as on Facebook – search @LymmFestival. Sign up for the newsletter at the website and you will be among the first to hear about all the events as well as details of when tickets will be going on sale.

St John’s Church (www.stjohnshighlegh.org.uk)As I write this the sun is shining, gardens are full of spring colour and the music of birdsong is everywhere. At church, as will be the case for many of you, we have been having a good spring clear out, both in the garden and in the church. Margaret and Brian Green worked very hard in the garden, clearing weeds, thinning out bushes, cutting back trees and shrubs and burning old wood and debris. The result is magnificent! So now, the spring bulbs can be clearly seen snowdrops, hellebores and muscari provide a long season of spring flowers.

We are very fortunate at St John’s. Visitors for occasional services such as funerals baptisms and weddings all comment on how beautiful the parish church is, how attractive the garden and how wonderful the setting with its open views to the west. There are two benches on which you can rest and enjoy the sunset. You are all very welcome to come and enjoy the view and some quiet time to reflect. In the front garden we also have our Memory Tree where the names of those whom we have loved but no longer see are left from year to year after the service of Thanksgiving. If you would like somewhere more private, we have a quiet garden which is available for parishioners to come and sit quietly; to reflect on current events in your own life or across the nation and the world; to remember those whom we have loved who are with no more on earth; to pray or to simply appreciate the quiet environment. We hope that you will enjoy the church and its surrounding gardens. However we have to protect the church building and keep the grounds safe for visitors so activities such as football or dog-walking are not allowed within the church grounds.

As well as welcoming those who come to church, we try to meet High Legh residents at social events. Recently we had a quiz night, very ably created and led by Nick Gerrard, supported by live music from Nicola, Corrie and Hannah: “Thank you” to you all. Next, we are looking forward to participating in the High Legh Big Weekend on 14th May and we hope that we will see you at church to admire our scarecrows and enjoy our refreshments.

We hope that you will join us at one of our services. We celebrate Holy Communion weekly. Once a month on the second Sunday of each month, we have a less formal service which sometimes involves Café Church, when we have breakfast together as we listen to readings and discuss the implications of various topics, events and issues. We also have a new service on each second Sunday - Story-telling; come and listen to stories about Jesus, enjoy

Our Thursday talks so far this year have been both fascinating and well attended. In January Dr Sarah Crowther talked about the NASA Genesis mission to gather samples from the Solar wind. In February Prof. Rob Jeffries unravelled the mysteries of gravitational waves , the new hot topic in astronomy, how they were predicted and discovered recently using the LIGO detectors in the USA. For our March talk, Prof. Mike Bode gave a fascinating talk on the fully robotic Liverpool telescope which is on La Palma in the Canaries. This is used not only for astronomical research, but also by the National Schools Observatory scheme.

On 6th April Brian Feast will be talking about his trip to northern Norway to see the Northern Lights and showing some of the excellent photographs and footage he obtained. (Note this is the first Thursday of the month).

Then in May we have Prof. Ian Morison whose talk is “The art of astro-photography” on which he is an acknowledged expert.

In June, we have Dr Colin Steele whose talk will be about the role of the Amateur and Professional Astronomer. These talks will be at St John’s Church Room starting at 7:30. Admission £3 under 18’s free. Please do come along, all are welcome.

If skies are clear the observatory is open on Friday nights from about 8PM. Admission is free – donations welcome. Also we have a text alert scheme to give short notice that the observatory will be open to take advantage of clear skies. Let us have your mobile number via our website and we will add you to the list.

If it is sunny on High Legh Big Weekend Saturday 13th May and Sunday 14th from 2 to 4:30 PM we will set up our special telescopes to view the Sun safely and our solar projection telescope as well to look for sun spots. If it is cloudy but dry you are very welcome to come and look around including our display of photographs.

BBC Stargazing live is on 28,29 & 30th March and the observatory will be open on those evenings, clear skies permitting. The observatory is also open during Abbey Leys Farmers Markets on the first Sunday of each month. Do call in and have a look round. Road Safety - Following a meeting of the Cheshire East Highways Committee on 15 March you will be pleased to hear Cheshire East will, over the next 4-6 weeks, undertake a traffic management investigation report for West Lane. This will include accessing existing traffic data, accident data from the previous 5 years and officer recommendations regarding a Speed Management Strategy for the road. High Legh Parish Council will continue to push for better road safety across the whole Parish. We hope that, given that the new A556 road is now fully open, the report will be conducted in a balanced manner and provide a meaningful result. In addition to the issues experienced along West Lane, as a Parish Council we are also continuing to push enforcement authorities on a number of highways issues across the Parish and ensuring road safety remains a key priority. Please do continue to provide us with feedback of issues and problems as they occur.

North Drive/Pheasant Walk junction - Cllr Adams and Doreen Walker met with Balfour Beatty recently to discuss the damaged area around the willow tree as a result of the necessary gas works. Balfour Beatty have agreed to turf the area and to plant some bulbs later in the year. They would like to involve the school children in the bulb planting. They will organise a new road sign and hope to repair the grit bin. They have also committed to come back to make sure the grass seed has taken on the verges. Please note that Balfour Beatty informed us that they will be returning in the school summer holidays to finish the work at the top end of Pheasant Walk and West Lane. They will keep residents informed as soon as they know when work will start.

A556 - Our Chairman, Cllr Gail Coenen attended the Official Opening of the A556. She is pictured here with George Osborne MP, Borough Cllr Olivia Hunter and other local Parish Council Chairmen.

Letter from the Queen - In November we planted an oak tree to commemorate the 90th Birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II. We wrote to Her Majesty to tell her what we had done. We have received a thank you letter and card which says “The Queen is touched to know your community has marked Her Majesty’s special milestone by planting an oak tree in High Legh”.

The picture shows the Mayor of Cheshire East, Councillor Olivia Hunter, who is also our Ward Councillor, Lord and Lady Grey and Class 5 from High Legh School who helped to plant it. High Legh Parish Council are very grateful to Michael Hulton, a High Legh resident, who donated the tree and prepared the ground ready for planting.

Safety Central - Mark Shone, Centre Manager, Safety Central, gave a presentation to the PC on the new facility at Lymm. It will be an interactive life skills education centre with learning zones and activities to educate visitors about staying safe and keeping healthy. The first visits are in September and they are looking for volunteers to act as rangers to guide people around. The Fire Station has a separate entrance and will have a whole time watch with one fire engine and an aerial appliance. For further information about Safety Central, visit www.safetycentral.org.uk.

Manchester Airport are holding a Community Outreach session on Thursday, 11 May 12.30 17.30 at High Legh Garden Centre.

Policing - Our PCSO Gary Fulton can be contacted on 101 or [email protected]. Please report anything suspicious to the CAT team on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.

Subscribe to our email updates by emailing the clerk.Next Meeting: Monday, 3 April and then the AGM on 22 May - check the web calendar for updates.

HIGH LEGH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – UPDATEFollowing the survey of High Legh residents undertaken last summer we received 343 responses to the c.620 questionnaires delivered to households in the Parish. These responses represent over 900 people in High Legh (a summary of the results is available on the www.hlnp.org website).

This a very encouraging response to such a detailed survey. It provides a substantial body of evidence from which draft policies for the High Legh Neighbourhood Plan will be prepared and on which there will be a further consultation with residents before a Plan is finalised and voted on in a Parish-wide referendum.

WHAT IS CLEAR FROM THE SURVEY FINDINGS IS THAT:1. the majority of people want the character of High Legh to be maintained;2. there is an appetite for some limited form of housing development;3. there is an appetite to see if we can create more of a Village Centre

Work is now underway on preparing draft policies but there are two areas of the survey findings on which specific further work needs to be undertaken in order to get a more clear view from residents in relation to housing and how we can create more of a Village Centre in the context of the clear desire to maintain the character of High Legh and using grant funding the Steering Group has recently appointed a firm of master-planners, Land Studio. to undertake this work in consultation with High Legh residents.

Their work will include understanding how the Village works and people’s preferences more clearly before developing options on which your views will be sought. It is vital that as many people as possible take part in the consultations and more information will be published on the website, in this newsletter, and via the What’s On in High Legh bulletin and Parish Council emails.

In the meantime if you want to raise any questions please do not hesitate to contact Doreen Walker, Parish Clerk at [email protected].

High Legh Womens InstitutePresident Jean Evans opened the first meeting of the New Year to welcome speaker Karen Corcoran, the first mounted police lady in the north of England. Karen’s love of horses began at an early age. After a school careers visit she joined the Manchester & Salford Police Cadets. Her ambition to be a mounted police lady was difficult to achieve, but despite initial opposition, she achieved her goal.

Karen shared with us tales of how she trained horses to cope with crowd control at football matches and other noisy and challenging events. One Christmas there was a request from a Lady Mayor for a police horse to be present at the Pensioners Party. The horse had to negotiate a marble staircase; a tricky manoeuvre for such a large animal. Knowing how tempting mints can be, Karen lured her horse in, to delight the pensioners. Karen led her Manchester colleagues in the “All the Queen’s Horses” pageant in Windsor Great Park as part of the Jubilee Celebration in which 1,000 horses took part. Throughout her career Karen attracted attention from the Press, especially after she appeared in a Granada TV documentary. She was awarded a long service medal and ended her talk with a short film of her retirement party. She was obviously held in great esteem by her GMP colleagues; their first lady Mountie had proved her worth and had overcome any opposition. Karen had become a much loved colleague and Britain’s longest serving female Mountie.

The February meeting fell on St. Valentine’s Day so what better than a talk that took us through the ages to delve into the history of romance. Derek Poulson gave an interesting and witty presentation entitled “Love Actually”. Derek, an actor with a rather good (and sonorous) voice surprised everyone when a male voice could be heard dominating our usual rendering of Jerusalem. We were told how so many of our customs relating to weddings come from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and from Pagan rituals. We learnt the rather unpleasant history of St. Valentine, the flirtatious language of fans and the not so romantic pagan history of mistletoe. The evening, interspersed with poetry and Shakespeare was a fun time, enjoyed by all.

It was a lively evening in March when the Thelwall Morris Dancers came to call. They danced from 7.30pm to 9.00pm, skilfully performing the varied styles of Morris Dancing.

There are many regional variations of the Morris Dance. Andrew White explained that the oldest record dates back to 1448. A tapestry was discovered in Norfolk depicting Morris Dancers from this period, though how it all began nobody knows.

During the presentation there was a demonstration by Ruth Bibby, a champion clog dancer. It turned out to be a very entertaining evening.

The Craft Group produced green heart badges for members to wear in support of the WI campaign for a greener Britain. Members have also been busy making bonnets for babies in intensive care. Book Club members have been reading “The Tea Planters Wife “by Dinah Jefferies. In February, the Walking Group met for a walk along High Legh lanes stopping for lunch at the Bears Paw and in March, the walkers dined at the Whipping Stocks after a walk around Peover Hall. Our Darts team didn’t win the WI county championship this time but played well, so better luck next time.

Members enjoyed the production of ”Handbagged “at the Garrick. A trip to see the ballet “Cinderella” at the Lowry was combined with a morning shopping trip and proved to be an enjoyable day out. A visit to see “Brassed Off “ at the Garrick is planned for April and a 5 day visit to West Sussex is on the agenda for September. The trip will include a visit to Arundel Castle and Chichester.

The Resolutions Evening will be held on May 9th.The meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in High Legh Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Visitors and newcomers are always welcome.

High Legh WalkThere are many attractive walks around the village. Please send me your suggestions about interesting walks, with a photo or two, to [email protected].

Circular walk from the Village Hall Car Park (WA16 6LR) (approx 2.6 miles)

Turn left into West Lane (B5159) and walk (footpath on the left) to the Avenue (2nd right). The Avenue bears left to bring you past St John’s Church, where there is a bench so you can rest and enjoy the garden. The huge boulder in front of the Church was deposited by the retreating glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. The Avenue continues downhill, turn right onto West Lane then 2nd right into Peacock Lane.

On your left you come to Abbey Leys Organic Farm with its very free range chickens, its Farm Shop and High Legh Community Observatory. HLCO is usually open for observing on Friday evenings when skies are clear. Peacock Lane goes by the Golf course (there is a right of way on your right which goes across the course to Wrenshot Lane). Alternatively, continue a short distance further and turn right at Broad Oak Lane. Turn right at the end into Wrenshot Lane past the Bath Pool, on your left.

This pool is managed for fishing by the Bay Malton Angling Club. At one time it was used by the residents of High Legh East Hall as their swimming pool, which is how it got the name Bath Pool. Look out for birds around this woodland and also around the pools on the Golf course. Swans and sparrowhawks have been seen. Moorhens often scuttle across Wrenshot Lane.

Cross Wrenshot Lane and take a short stroll through the woodland walk which is to the left of the school. The grass is full of wild celandines and bulbs in spring. You can stop by the seat, donated by her family in memory of Edna McKeown, who has recently celebrated her 100th Birthday. The information board describes birds that can be seen around the woodland. Turn back to go along Pheasant Walk, bear right and you can see the private St Mary’s Chapel on your left.

This was constructed in 1581 as the chapel for High Legh East Hall. Some bullet marks can be seen on the brickwork – they are from a Civil War skirmish between Cromwell’s forces marching from Warrington and retreating Royalists. High Legh is one of only 6 villages in Cheshire which is described as having a Church in the 1086 Doomsday Survey. The location of that early church is not known. Ancient yew trees often indicate a site that has been used for religious purposes.

Continue along Pheasant Walk, turn left into West Lane and return to the carpark. The Village Hall was opened in 1904 as High Legh Primary School. High Legh Bowling ClubIt may interest readers to know a little about the founding of the club, which started as an indoor club in 1986. It was decided soon after, to try to build an outside green. Lease negotiations, led by John Pimlott the then Club Chairman, started with the Cornwall Legh family, following which the Club set about building the green with a loan from Macclesfield Council and a local contractor and a £1000 gift from the High Legh Community Association. The green was opened by the Mayor of Macclesfield.

The Club is open for membership to all High Legh residents and people from surrounding areas. Current membership has reduced to around the 100 mark, with less than 50% High Legh resident membership, and the Club is now actively looking to increase membership which currently costs less than 70p per week ( plus a small charge when playing in a team). Please feel free to contact Jean Mason, Chairman, on 01925 753643 or Jack Stant, President, on 01925 757294.

Improvements have been made to the inside of the clubhouse, whilst on the playing front the Indoor Section has been very busy on Wednesday afternoons and evenings. We also field a team in the Cheshire Villages Indoor Bowling. As we go to press the Club is busy making sure that everything is in order for the start of the outdoor season. The green itself has been professionally prepared and recently 14 members turned out as a working party to make the whole site look spick and span.

This season, we shall be fielding nine teams playing in six leagues, five affiliated to the Cheshire County Crown Green Bowling Association and one to the Greater Manchester Crown Green Bowling Association. Congratulations to Dirk Broad’s “B” Team who will now be playing in Division 4 of the Knutsford Men’s League, having been promoted as Runners Up in Division 5 last season. We have is relaxed and enjoyable social bowling every Wednesday afternoon for those who just want to come along and play “without pressure”, with a few friendly matches against local sides.

The Annual General Meeting was attended by 45 members. At this meeting our President, Jack Stant, was confirmed as President for another three years. We are also delighted that two further members, Chris Ashton and John Rossiter, have volunteered to join the Management Committee. We look forward to their support and input in the years to come.

2017 – A Classic year for the 10th Anniversary High Legh Robert Moffat Memorial 10k RaceApril showers came early and torrentially for the 10th Anniversary High Legh 10K – but the Show went on! A mixture of 497 seasoned runners and first timers braved the very tough conditions while local residents cheered on from the safety of their umbrellas and waterproofs. The many volunteer Marshals gave unfailing cheerful encouragement, providing a great morale boost to flagging spirits.

The overall winner, for the second time, was James Wignall of Sale Harriers with a new course record of 32 minutes 35 seconds. The first woman home was fellow Sale Harrier Zoe Gmerek in 41minutes 37 seconds. While some runners managed to achieve new Personal Bests despite the mud and standing water, for many it was about ‘being a completer not a competer’ and there were some happy and emotional scenes at the finish line.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the organisation of the race under the Directorship of Nick Gerrard from both Lymm Runners and the High Legh Community, especially the Marshals, High Legh Primary School and PTA and of course, our generous sponsors. It is a wonderful community event and after 10 years it has become a firm fixture on the High Legh calendar. We now look forward to the next 10 years!

Our Sponsors are: The Mere Golf Resort and Spa, Abbey Leys Farm Shop, High Legh Garden Centre, High Legh Park Golf Club, Roberts Bakery, Costcutter, RMS Signage, Sheldons Dairy, Knutsford, Moto in the Community Trust, The Co-op, Lymm Gin and Champagne, The Bears Paw Country Inn and Restaurant, Room Forty Mobile Afternoon Tea, Samantha Foxall Sports Massage & Therapy.
