*** Newsletter *** Hilda Walker Intermediate School – October, 2011
Letter From the Principal
Dear Walker Parents/Guardians,
Walker students are now settled in the routine of a new school
year, focusing on improving academically and participating in a
variety of after-school activities. They have taken the first of
three NWEA assessments to help us monitor academic growth in
reading, math and language. Our teachers will use this
information and also student performance on last year’s 2011
ISAT to plan lessons and activities to help our students keep
growing!
Last year our Walker fifth and sixth graders met the high
expectations set for them by their teachers and parents by
performing so well on the 2011 ISAT. Overall 90% of our
students met or exceeded Adequate Yearly Progress. This is
phenomenal! Congratulations to all Walker staff members,
Walker parents and Walker students for working together to help
our students grow and perform so well! Individual student ISAT
results were sent home with Walker students on Friday,
September 30th
.
Progress Reports (grades): Since grades were posted on
Power School through at least September 26th
, you are able to
take a look at your child’s academic progress and performance in
all classes for the first half of this grading period. The grading
period ends on October 19th
. Conference Days are scheduled for
November 7th
and 8th
. Please call your child’s teacher to set up a
conference in November if you have not already done so. If you
have immediate concerns, we invite you to call your child’s
teacher right now to discuss options and suggestions for a
more successful second half of this grading period.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jan Zevkovich, Principal
Mr. Jeff Libowitz, Assistant Principal

PBIS News
To start the new school year all students were introduced to “The
Walker Way”. Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe are
the guidelines that students follow every day. An assembly was
held for the students and staff to kick off the start of the year
following “The Walker Way”. After the assembly students
learned the expectations for all areas of the school and created
posters to remind others how to be respectful, responsible, and
safe in those areas.
Students are acknowledged for following “The Walker Way” by
receiving PAWS from teachers and staff. These PAWS are
collected by students and can be used at PAW Mart to purchase
various items. PAW Mart will open starting in October 6th
and
will be open every Thursday thereafter. Homerooms are also
acknowledged for their behavior by earning class PAW tickets.
At the end of the quarter the homeroom with the most PAWS will
receive a pizza party during lunch.

The October 26, 2011 School Board Meeting
will be at Walker Intermediate School
at 7:00 p.m.
A Good Idea…….
Since some students don’t take activity buses often, there is
sometimes confusion when they need to. To put your child at ease,
a good idea would be to go over the Activity Bus list with your
son/daughter ahead of time and decide which activity bus your
child should take and what stop is closest to your home. Put the
information on a note card and place it in a small, zipped area of
his/her backpack. This way he/she will always have the
information on hand. This would also work well for work and cell
numbers. _________________________________________
ELL NEWS
Welcome to a new school year. I wanted to introduce myself to
you. My name is Ms. Soch and I’m the ELL teacher at Summit
Hill Junior High and at Hilda Walker Schools. I teach 5th to 8
th
grade ELL students. ELL stands for English Language Learner.
My job is help support students who speak a second language so
that there isn’t a language barrier preventing their academic
success. Please help your child by encouraging them to speak and
read in your first language as much as possible so they can build a
firm foundation in that language. The transition to English will
then become easier. I will be communicating with classroom
teachers in order to determine areas in which each student needs
support. This often includes pre-teaching and review of material.
I’m looking forward to the new school year and to work with your
child to become successful in school.
Thank you for your support!
Ms. Soch, ELL Teacher
Thank You to Hilda Walker SCO!!!
We would like to thank the HWSCO volunteers for sharing their
time and talents in order to organize so many activities throughout
each school year. Through their good works and the support of
parents and teachers, the HWSCO was able to help support our
“PBIS” program. Furthermore, our HWSCO has committed to
funding educational assemblies and activities already this year.
HWSCO FUNDRAISERS
The SCO board would sincerely like to thank all families who
participated in our World’s Finest Chocolate/Pasta fundraiser.
Congratulations to the winners: Trevor Baker – Grade 5 and
Alexis Heneisen – Grade 6.
Thank you for all your support!

Math Club News
The Math Club at Hilda Walker started on September 7th and will
continue through November 21st on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The Math Club is an open program for grades five and six. It is
made available to all levels of students who are interested in
working on math activities. The Club features games and activities
designed so students can practice their problem-solving strategies,
mathematical, and critical thinking skills while having fun with
Math.
Some activities involve students in real-world situations including
patterns, visual thinking, and decision making. The students
become independent problem solvers as they use calendars,
measurement, money, and other mathematical concepts to solve
problems. One of the projects covered will be constructing a three
dimensional geometric figure using algebra and geometry. Such
activities carry curiosity, competition, and excitement for the
students involved in the Math Club.

Garden Club News
Garden Club members, under the direction of Mrs. Pfeiffer, with
assistance from parent volunteers, Karen Stevens, Ed Pajeau, and
RexAnne Coad, are planting milkweed plant species on the school
property in order to establish a monarch butterfly garden. We
received flats of plants from Julie Arvia, Park District Supervisor,
and have transplanted them in a garden area just outside the bus
doors. Our hope is to give Monarch Butterflies who have been
released from Mrs. Pfeiffer’s classroom – and other Monarch
butterflies who happen to pass by – a place to lay eggs and
continue the cycle of life for their species.
Further, Garden Club members are learning about ladybugs and
beetles that resemble ladybugs, and the importance of the same in
our environment. Look for artistic representations of the same,
created by Garden Club members, in the Horticulture Room in the
next week.
Walker Physical Education Newsletter Fall 2011
We are off to a great start in Physical Education classes this school
year. The Physical Education staff would like to thank you for
your support and take you through the first quarter and also inform
you on what we are planning for the rest of the semester.
The Physical Education staff appreciates your continued support
of our program. We are always collecting Box Tops and
Campbell’s Soup letters in order to purchase new equipment for
students. Please collect and cut out any Box Tops or Campbell’s
soup labels you have at home, and send them in with your child.
We will take as many as possible. Thank you for your support!
After four weeks of Physical Education, students have participated
in team building activities in order to get to know one another and
to work on problem solving and decision-making together. After a
fun week of team-building, we began fitness stations to prepare
students for the Fitness Gram testing. The fitness stations worked
very well; students received a great workout while traveling
throughout the gym listening to upbeat music.
The Fitness Gram ran smoothly. Thank you to all who sent in the
height and weight form in order to give us a better idea as to how
your child is doing in regards to physical activity and health. We
appreciate your cooperation. Students performed very well and we
think they have a great foundation as to what we are measuring
and why we measure them using the following tests: push-ups,
curl-ups, sit and reach, trunk lift, and the Pacer. Once we have all
of the results logged in, you will receive a letter from us in the
mail regarding your child’s results from the Fitness Gram.
We are finishing up Fitness Gram testing this week (9/16), and
will begin several team sports units consisting of football and
soccer.
Thanks again for your continued cooperation and support of our
Physical Education program. Please let the Physical Education
staff know if you have any questions.

[email protected] Cross Country
This season the Hilda Walker Cross Country Team has been
training hard and demonstrating The Walker Way at all meets.
Most of the students on the team run a 1 mile race but some
students have taken on the challenge of running 2 miles with the
junior high. As the season comes to an end some of the Walker
runners will be counted on to compete at the junior high level.
Good luck to the team the rest of the way and GO WILDCATS!

VIDEO CLUB
The Walker Video Club’s first meeting was after school on Sept.
9, 2011 with 34 members and 6 sixth grade helpers from last year:
Sarah West, Vicky Soliz, Alex Lipp, Xavier Sevcik, Andres
Gutierrez de Velasco, and Tyler Orloff. In our first two meetings,
students have learned how to make a photo name card, save it as a
picture, start a project in MovieMaker, import pictures and add
titles. During future training sessions, they will learn how to use a
video camera and edit their recorded video, as well as, add
transitions, effects, music and narration to their movie. Our last
training session will be on November 4th
, but we will continue to
meet throughout the year to work on special video projects. Video
club members can volunteer to film and edit various school
events, such as the Veteran’s Day Assembly, the Walker School
play, our Talent Show, plus other classroom activities. They will
also update our “Step-Up Day” movie about Walker School,
which is shown to the fourth graders and their parents in the
spring.

REMINDER FROM TINLEY PARK POLICE DEPT.
Effective January 1, 2010:
A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at
any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a School
Speed Zone, or on a highway in a Construction Zone or
Maintenance Speed Zone.
The Tinley Park Police Department will be enforcing this law.
The safety and well-being of all our students is of primary
importance. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact
the Police Department.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Reminders…..
Buses:
In order to provide safe transportation for all of our students,
children must ride the same bus to and from school each day. They
will not be able to switch buses without written permission from
the school office. Permission will only be granted for emergencies,
which do not include babysitting arrangements or going to a
friend’s house. Students also need to use their designated bus stop
for boarding and drop off each day.
Car riders:
Please remember that the building is not open for students until
8:00 am each day. Please do not drop off your child before this
time. Our primary concern is the safety of your child.
All student pick-ups are in the front of the building at the main
entrance only. All drivers picking up students must enter the parking lot using the
east entrance that is nearest the baseball field. Please follow the
driveway along the outside of the parking lot. Vehicles are to form
a single file line stopping at the sidewalk in front of the main
entrance to the school. Your student(s) may not cross the parking
lot to get into a vehicle. All vehicles must exit the parking lot
using the west exit. Vehicles are not to drive across the parking lot
to use the east exit for departure (as it is designated a one-way
entrance during school hours). If a driver needs to enter the
building to pick up their student(s), please park in the middle of the
lot and walk towards the main entrance. During pick-up times,
students are not permitted to cross the parking lot without an adult.
Drivers picking up students (or absent work from the office) are
asked not to park in the spaces adjacent to the sidewalks. Parking
in these spaces poses a danger for a collision during this time. If
your student is not outside when your vehicle is the lead one, the
driver will need to pull around and go back through the pick-up line
of cars.
Visitors:
For the safety of our students and staff, all visitors must sign in at
the main office. This includes before, during, and after school
hours. Please have a picture ID available when you check in. We
understand that you will periodically need to talk with your child’s
teacher. You are always welcome to do, but we do ask that you
arrange for a date and time in advance with your child’s teacher.
This will ensure that they are available to talk with you when you
arrive.
Cell Phone Use:
The use of cell phones at school is detrimental to the academic
climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and
creates disciplinary problems. Students’ cell phones should be
turned off and NOT JUST SILENCED while inside the building
before, during, and after the school day. Cell phones must be
stored in backpacks and not in student possession during the
school day. Students who violate this policy will have the cell
phone confiscated and will receive disciplinary consequences.
Dress Code reminder….
With cooler weather upon us, please remind your child(ren) of the
appearance code as stated in the handbook.
Students’ dress for school must be appropriate.
Pants with excessive shredding or holes are not
appropriate.
Skirts and shorts must be to the fingertips regardless of
additional leg wear underneath.
Necklines must be 3” from the collarbone area.
Pajama pants (blanket fleece and flannel pants
included) may only be worn on designated spirit days.
Outerwear, such as coats, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, hats
and other head coverings may not be worn during the
school day unless the student is directly entering or
leaving the building. Fingerless gloves are not permitted
while in the school building.
You may consider sending your child with a sweatshirt or sweater
to keep at school in case they get cold during the school day.
