For many years, our world has seen wonderful pieces of work from great
writers who still remain in our hearts for their contribution towards literature.
There are many who even now, thrill us with their work. Shakespeare,
the British poet and playwright had set people's minds in a whirl by writing
plays and poems which fascinated the human mind. He had once stated
that 'Life is a stage in a theatre'. Rabindranath Tagore, was a story writer,
poet and playwright. He has written a number of fantastic stories and plays on
human stages and character. He wrote over 3,000 poems and built the
famous Vishwa Bharathi University. There were other authors like
Charles Dickens, who has written classics like 'Great Expectations' and
'Oliver Twist'. Jane Austen wrote the bittersweet tale of 'Pride and Prejudice'.
Mark Twain wrote the great 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'. One of the
children's favourites – Enid Blyton will always be remembered for her
contribution towards children's books like – 'The Famous Five', 'The Secret
Seven', 'Malory Towers' and 'St Clare's'. Coming to the authors of today,
J K Rowling, another children's favourite has given us the 'Harry Potter'

All of them have opened a window to another world in our minds, thanks to the
magic created by them. So, open a book and escape into another world.
HUNGAMA 2016 - NURSERY, LKG, UKG
In today's world of technology, mobiles, laptops and
smartphones hardly any time is spent with the family. Gone
are the days of family picnics, outings and family
get-togethers. We at NHPS Pre-Primary, presented
HUNGAMA 2016 - a bonding experience that
encouraged parents and grand-parents to forget their
busy corporate life, their daily schedule and just enjoy
spending quality time with their little ones. A variety of
performances - music, dance, skit, magic show were put
up by the parents, grandparents and children. Pride and joy
twinkled in our little children's eyes, when they went up on
stage with their family in front of their school teachers and
friends. Overall, an overwhelming and enthusiastic
participation by the Nursery, LKG and UKG families!
The Pre-Primary children of UKG put together the
Janmashtami programme, which showcased the different
incidents in Lord Krishna's life - starting from his birth,
through the mischievous antics of Krishna, his power and
glory seen through his interaction with the fruit seller
and Raas-Leela. The highlight was the pot-breaking or
Dahi-Handi episodes. This year, the parents of our UKG
children were invited to watch this show and the feelings
and emotion that they returned home with, were that of
pride, amazement, happiness and nostalgia. 'Hardwork
pays' this was rightly proved by the remarkable show put
up which kept the audience enthralled through the entire
duration of the show. Kudos to the UKG children.

AND THAT IS WHY I HATE BUS JOURNEYS
It was that time of the year again,
when we had to visit our extended
family in a remote vil lage in
Tamil Nadu. We usually take a flight to
Chennai and drive to Ramapattinam.
The flight was delayed by two hours
and we reached Chennai at six o'clock.
The car was not waiting for us at the
airport. It was very hot and I was
sweating a lot. My mother was
screaming into the phone. We could
not get another car for the next five
hours. We had no other choice but to
travel by bus. I never travel by bus.
The mere sight of a bus terrifies me. I
suffer from motion sickness and
obsessive compulsive disorder. I
cannot stand dirty places.
I threw a big tantrum, but in the end,
my mother won. I reluctantly entered
the blue colour bus which looked like
it would break down any minute. The
first thing I noticed was the smell. The
whole bus smelled of sweat and fish.
Ramapattinam earned its living by
exporting fish. Hence, the bus reeked
of fish. I wanted a seat in the front, as
it helped my motion sickness, but there
was someone already sitting there. I
was not going to sit at the back, so
my mother had to politely request the
lady sitting there to move. There was
How ironic! They spent the rest
of the journey talking to themselves
and only spoke to me to relate some
incident which they thought was
cute. I wanted to jump out of the
moving bus when the baby sitting
next to me started crying. I wanted
to go back and sit next to my
mother, but someone was already
sitting there. I had already used that
newspaper to clean my hair. There
was no way I would sit there without
protection. The ride was never
ending, and now that I was awake I
could feel every little jolt. When I
thought I could bear this no longer,
we reached our destination. I got up
with renewed enthusiasm and
climbed down the stairs. 'Splash' I
had steeped right into sludge. I
sighed. This was the worst bus ride
ever.

I tried to sleep through the journey.
I forgot that the windows of the bus
had no grills. As I leaned against the
frame of the bus, my hair was
outside the window. When I woke
up, I was shaking. My mother shook
me awake! I was about to give her a
piece of my mind, when I felt
something wet on my hair. I was too
scared to even ask what it was. I
threw a fit when I realized that it
was pigeon excreta. The bus driver
waited as I washed it out of my hair.
The newspaper crackled under my
weight. It was uncomfortable but it
was much better than sitting on that
green thing. A boy came and sat in
front of me. Immediately, the bus
smelled of mud and dirt. He had
much on his nails and fingers. I
gagged reflexively. My mother
whacked my hand and told me to
keep quiet. I ignored her as I
plugged the earphones into my ears.
It seemed that all the forces of
nature were conspiring against me
on that day. The men sitting at the
back started singing their folk songs.
Normally, I would have enjoyed this
around a bonfire with hot chocolate,
but under these circumstances, it
was just irritating. I tried to drown
out the noise by increasing the
volume on my phone. The idea failed
miserably. It sounded l ike a
cacophony of horrible sounds.
We were only five miles away from
Ramapattinam. I was seriously
considering walking till there, until I
spotted a familiar face chatting with
my mother.
something green on the seat. I almost
gagged. My mother asked the bus
driver to wait as I purchased a
newspaper from the nearest shop.
It was Ram, my best friend in the
village. I promptly pulled him away
and began talking to him, until he
introduced me to his 'best friend' Sita

THE POPULARS Another note. I sighed while opening it. 'You are so ugly that the juniors of our school start crying when they see you.' This was one of the many notesthat I had received during my first week in this new school. The most logical thing would be to not open them, but it was something my body did inspite of my brain warning it not to. I threw the note in the dustbin and headed to the cafeteria. Groupism was prevalent here like in any other school. At the entrance sat the populars and behind them the unpopulars. I could feel the populars' eyes boring into me as I walked towards an empty seat. One of them snickered as they saw my clothes. I sighed and sat with the unpopulars. They also ignored me. As I went past the populars' table, I tripped and fell flat on my face. The whole cafeteria was laughing. Another classic stunt. Thank God they didn't do that when I got back with my food.
Another week passed by and I was still ignored. Well, not completely ignored
you know, but called once in a while to be the butt of the populars' jokes.
They 'accidentally' spilt paint on my clothes and threw my books in the
dustbin. When the teacher gave out worksheets, they 'accidentally' tore mine.
And the notes. They never stopped. The one today said, 'Did you pick out
your clothes from the ‘Lost and Found’?
Apart from these 'accidental' occurrence, I was completely ignored. Not a single soul spoke to me. Not even when we were assigned to be partners for a group project. In this way a month passed. Then two. But the notes never stopped. The only thought that ran through my mind when I saw them was who had the time to write them.
One day I came to school extremely
early and hid behind the cupboard in
the class. Enough of waiting. Time to
actually use the tactics taught to me
by Trixie Belden. Someone came into
the class and stopped at my place. I
stiffened. The person was none other
than Josh, one of the populars!
“It is a custom you know, to welcome every new student with these notes. I
too was once a new student. They sent me notes too. I was brave enough to
tell them on their face that I was not affected. That impressed them and
they let me join their gang.” “So all this is just a trick to get into the popular
gang?”
“Hey, Lara.” So he knew my name. “Who you call the populars, were actually
the ones being bullied. Who you call the unpopulars were the bullies. The
people being bullied decided that they had enough, and formed a gang, to
put everybody through the same torture they had faced.” I just walked away
from there.
Our English teacher asked me to submit an original essay on a social problem.
I picked bullying.
“We often think that bullies are insecure, but we do not realize that the bullied
feel insecure too. Sometimes, so insecure that they forget who they
are. They ape the people who they want to be. They become bullies. They
put others through the same torture that they have faced. We are all equal.
We face the same problems. If we all realize this, then no one will be put
through the same torture as me.”
WHY IS THE SEA BLUE?
However dissatisfied with this explanation, Raman decided to investigate on
his own.
The scattering of sunlight by air molecules explains the blue colour of the sky.
Using this phenomenon, Raman proved why the sea is blue.
When white light from the sun is incident on tiny particles, blue light gets
scattered the most and red light the least. This makes both the sea and the
sky appear blue.
Today we also know that water selectively absorbs red light and reflects blue,
thus adding blue appearance.
Raman Effect:
Raman continued to study light
scattered by various liquids and
solids. He found that when coloured
light entered a liquid, some of the
scattered light was of different
colours than the original light. The
colour of the scattered light depended
on the liquid. This discovery is
known as "Raman Effect".
From here, Raman continued his explorations on scattering of light.
Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 in Physics for his discoveries.
Erum FathimaB.ed Student
While on a sea voyage in 1921,
C. V. Raman became fascinated by
the sea's stunning blue colour. In the
1870’s the English physicist Rayleigh
had reasoned that the colour of the
sea was just the reflection of the
blue sky.
I experienced a sudden burst of courage as I walked up to him, pulled him by his
collar, and slapped him hard. So hard, that his cheek turned red. “Do you know
what you have put me through? Do you know that I cry myself to sleep
everyday? It is bad enough that I am ignored by everybody. But these notes?
They are the limit” I sobbed. Josh's face turned red. Was Josh, the popular,
actually feeling guilty?
'MASSACRE'
The monotonous ringing of the fire alarm which startled Lisa at first, now
irritated her. There was chaos all around the room, with 'doctors' trying
their best to revive their 'patients'. The room was filled with smoke and the
water sprinklers that had automatically switched on due to the apparent
fire was making the ground all wet and slippery.
Lisa couldn't handle this anymore. The operation was now compromised.
Being the head of the team, she felt like she had failed the mission. She had
no choice. All she could do was to call a professional for help and hope the
task at hand would be completed today. She ran to the telephone to call her
aunt Elizabeth, a retired personnel from this field with expert training and
skills. After the call ended, Lisa ran back to the scene.
As she scanned the room, she assessed the casualities. Due to lack of
organization and constriction of space, everything had gone wrong. Towards
her right lay little ones, all in bits and pieces, beyond repair. It broke her
heart. As she moved on, she noticed that a few of them were drowning in
their own dark red fluid. The scene was so ghastly that she had to turn
away before her insides turned upside down. The red fluid was all over the
floor and she did not even want to imagine what it was. There were 'bodies'
everywhere. She almost lost her faith in the mission when she saw the bigger
ones, the ones she trusted the most, burnt in the fiery box of fire beyond
reckoning. There were stains all over the walls. Just when Lisa was about to
give up, she heard a gasp behind her. It was her Aunt. “My, oh my!”, she
exclaimed. It looked like the scene had taken away the words from her
mouth. After she got her bearings she continued, “What a mess! Look at
what you've done to my kitchen. Switch off those fire alarms. They are very
annoying.” Lisa switched them off immediately. “Ah, that's better.”, she said.
Elizabeth continued, “Oh, look at those cupcakes fallen to the ground and
those jelly filled jelly doughnuts with all its raspberry filling coming out. Look
at all the cranberry sauce you've spilt on the floor. It's surely going to leave a
stain”. Lisa's aunt rattled on about all the mess Lisa and her friends had
made for a few more minutes. After that, she went to the fiery box – the
oven, and opened it.
A huge cloud of smoke rose and as it
cleared, Elizabeth looked into the
oven and said, “Gosh! All of you are
such amateurs. It looks as if an
explosion occurred in here.” There
was no denying that fact. The cake
batter had spilt from the tray and the excess heating had splattered the cake
mix everywhere. We were baking all these goodies for a bake sale to raise
money for charity but till now, nothing looked great. After analyzing
everything at hand, Elizabeth said, “You've got to start all over with those
cupcakes Lisa. Hurry up, I'll help you now”. As Lisa wiped off the dough from
her tiresome looking face, she replied, “Thanks Aunt Elizabeth. This whole
day has just been a massacre – a massacre of all these wonderful
goodies.”

TH70 INDEPENDENCE DAY EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP
The Department of Biology organized
an educational field trip to Mysore for
the students of II PU on the th17 of August, 2016. The teachers
organized a visit to CSRTI, a pioneer
research institution in the field of
t r op i ca l s e r i cu l t u re and the
Regional Natural History Museum; a
museum with exhibits of plants,
animals and geology of the southern region of India. Approximately 100
students took part in this memorable event.
The objective of the trip was to improve our scientific knowledge. The visit
to CSRTI proved to be a once in a lifetime learning opportunity. We learnt
that a single cocoon is capable of producing upto 1300 metres of silk thread.
The entire process from acquiring raw material to the production of finished
product was vividly shown. The process of rearing of silk worms, collection
of cocoons, reeling of silk thread, spinning of silk yarn, creation of silk cloth,
dyeing and ironing were shown to us. After the tour, we watched an
informative video describing the entire life cycle of a silk worm, which was
quite informative.
We headed to the Regional Natural
History Museum. This particular visit
proved to be a unique opportunity to
learn about nature through a
judicious mix of models, specimens,
charts and thematic exhibits. The
museum has an impressive gallery with
different sections such as Biological diversity, life through the ages and a
discovery center. Each section held a plethora of knowledge to satisfy our
inquisitive minds. We learnt a lot about the biodiversity of Southern India
and the intricacies of nature's work.
Both the visits succeeded in instilling knowledge in us. Athira KrishnanII PUC S4
