Letter from the PresidentThis week we enter “Literacy Month”, the designation given by Rotary International to March.

March is an extremely busy month. We'll have 5 meetings in March, and we'll have 2 speakers focusing on literacy, as well as a youth segment and a fascinating vocational guest speaker.

March is also the month when the President Elects Training Seminar (PETS) is held, on March 12th & 13th. With the recent resignation by Rob Rohrlach, at this point in time we do not have a President Elect attending PETS, which is a little troubling, as an incoming President must have attended a PETS to be able to take office. If we are unable to confirm a new President Elect by then, we will need to select someone who has served as a Rotary Club President previously, whether in our club or another.

I will be attending PETS as an incoming Assistant Governor, so will hear about DGE Liz Westoby's plans for our district in 2011-12, but that will not assist our club

establish its own goals during the time alloted for that purpose. If anyone is willing to serve as President in 2011-12, please let me know urgently, as DGE Liz is trying to finalise numbers for PETS.

Claire Forsdyke and Bill Hassell are organizing a club forum to discuss our club's future, currently scheduled for Sunday 20th March at 10 am at Bill and Sue's home in Nedlands. It is vital that as many members as possible attend.

The District Conference is also coming up at the end of March, and I am not aware of anyone from our club aside from Marcos and myself having registered. It would be wonderful to have some more members from our club attending, even for part of the conference, as there is a great programfocusing on some very important areas, especially youth and science.

Yours in Rotary,Simone

Last Week's MeetingWe celebrated Rotary's 106th birthday with a special guest, John Shephard, the Dean of

Perth. John is a member of the Rotary Club of Perth, and spoke a b o u t R o t a r y ' s achievements over the y e a r s , including the funding of the UWA Medical School by the WA Rotary Clubs, as well a s w h a t Rotary meant t o h i m personally.

It was lovely to have many other guests join us that evening, with most staying on to share some cake and have a c h a t a f t e r w a rd s . Thank to you all of you who did invite others to celebrate with us.

This Week's MeetingWe're opening Literacy Month with our first literacy speaker, the much anticipated Ms Rebecca Cody, Principal

of Methodist Ladies College.

We would like to cement a great working relationship with MLC, and are very much looking forward to meeting Ms Cody.

our proposed community-based Interact club was a huge success, with 16 prospective members, several parents, 5 members from our club, the District Interact Chairperson and a couple of other guests in attendance, filling the entire classroom granted to us by Christchurch Grammar School.

Although many of the students were from MLC, there were several different schools represented by students in years 7 – 12. We already have sufficient students to charter a new club (a minimum of 15 is needed), however we plan to hold 2 more interest meetings to gather more students and give them time to elect their initial board before submitting the paperwork to Rotary International to charter the club.

Hamish Mackie has kindly agreed to be our Interact co-ordinator.

The next Interact meeting will be held on Thursday 10th March at 7:00pm, at the same venue. The District Interact Chair has promised to supply pizza, so Hamish needs to know numbers in advance.

A big thank you to Ken Collins for all his hard work in organizing the initial meeting and liaising with the schools and individual parents to gather so many students for the club.

RYPENThe Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) camp for students aged 14-17 is coming up in May, and nominations are now open.

The board has agreed to fund the full cost of 2 participants; if parents are willing to meet part of the cost, we can sponsor more.

First preference will be given to our Interactors, particularly those who are in the upper age bracket who will not have the opportunity to apply again.

Club FoundationIf anyone would like to make a tax deductible donation to our Club Foundation, the bank details are:

Club ChangeoverOur Club Changeover Night has been booked for Thursday 30th June at the Nedlands Golf Club.

More details to follow.

Vale Maurice HillLabels and Badges badge maker PDG Maurice Hill passed away this morning after his 2 ½ year battle with bowel cancer.

Maurice was very generous when supplying our badges, not passing on the cost of GST or postage, and often replacing badges at no charge.

New Zealand EarthquakeShelterBox already has response team personnel and equipment in Christchurch. They have arranged commercial freight of 100 ShelterBoxes (5.5 tonnes) and a further 200 family size disaster relief tents be air freighted to New Zealand.

A further 140 ShelterBoxes are currently available in Melbourne, and ShelterBox are seeking assistance from the Australian government to transport them on government aircraft as they did for the Solomon Island tsunami.

Georgia Rotary Student ProgramThe Rotarians of Georgia, USA, Districts 6900, 69l0 and 6920 extend to you their warmest greetings and friendship. We request the cooperation of your Club in a project designed to further

international peace and understanding through acquaintanceship with international students. To further the International Service object of Rotary, we invite your Club to submit to us the name of a suitable student candidate(s) from your community to be considered for an award of a scholarship under the Georgia Rotary Student Program. This is not an exchange program and your Club will not be obligated to accept a student from our country. The scholarship covers one scholastic year, from August to May, and is for study ONLY in colleges and universities in the State of Georgia, USA. The school to be attended in Georgia will be selected by the Rotary Club and processed for admission by the Georgia Rotary Student Program. The Scholarship pays all scholastic costs including tuition, book allowance, campus housing, and food. The student must provide transportation to and from the U.S., medical insurance, spending money and any income taxes imposed on the scholarship by the US Treasury. Applicants must be at least 18 but not 25 years of age by August 1 of the year they begin class. Applicants cannot be married, and those persons who have previously studied in the U.S. for a period exceeding four months cannot be considered. In addition, we cannot grant scholarships to students in the medical, dental or nursing fields. There will be no exceptions to these r e q u i r e m e n t s ! O n l y a p p l i c a t i o n s f o r undergraduate students will be accepted. It is permissible, but not necessary, that a candidate for one of the scholarships be a son or daughter of a Rotarian. It is of primary importance to select someone who would be a good "Ambassador" of your country. We request that you give the program all the necessary publicity needed to secure acceptable candidates.

Applications must be received by October 1 each year to be considered for the following academic year that begins in August. Please visit our website www.grsp.org where you will find our application which must be filled in and submitted online along with a digital picture.
