Message from our new RI President Kalyan Banerjee

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in

Rotary,

All of us in Rotary are looking to

change the world – why else would

we be Rotarians? We believe our

world can be happier, healthier and

more peaceful and that we can

create that better world through our

service.

In 2011-12 I will ask Rotarians

to Reach Within to Embrace

Humanity. I will ask you to search

first within yourselves, to

understand that all of us everywhere

have the same dream, the same

hopes, the same aspirations and

similar dilemmas. When we

understand, and truly feel that

others needs are the same as our

own, we begin to understand how

important our work is, In the year

ahead we have three emphases in

our Rotary service.

Our first emphasis in this year will

be the family. The family and the

home are the core of our work- all

our service begins here. And

through the family we approach all

of our community and indeed, all of

humanity, as an extended family, in

which all members care for

eachother. In times of joy and in

times of need, no one is ever alone.

Our second emphasis will be

continuity – finding the things we do

well and taking them to the next

level. We must build on our

successes, expand on them, and

strive to do even more. Of course,

our greatest obligation is to

PolioPlus, where success is now so

close.

Our third emphasis will be change.

We must

understand

that true

change can

only begin

with each of

us, and start

within us. We

cannot share

peace with

others if we do

not have it to give. We

cannot look after the

whole world without first

looking after those closest

to us: our families, our

clubs and our

communities.

Mohandas K. Gandhi said

“You must be the change

you wish to see in the

world.” In Rotary we

endeavour to live ethically and

honestly, to share friendship and

fellowship, to see equal worth in

every human being. We are not

interested in the lowest common

denominator, for Rotary is anything

but common. Instead, we work to

elevate ourselves, elevate others, and

thereby elevate the world.

Together, we will Reach Within to

Embrace Humanity’ and in

peace, harmony and friendship, we

will bring change – and a more

joyful world.

Kalyan Banerjee

President, Rotary International

Above is the inaugural message from

our new President. Kalyan talks

about family, our obligation to

Service and to change. When

Chartered 2 ½ years ago, these were

the very foundations the Club was

started on. We strove to have a

family oriented, child friendly Club, a

Club which was active in community

and international projects and huge

changes were embraced. Members

decided that local trappings and

traditions, including a meal, would

be dispensed with, however, the core

things which constitute a Rotary Club

were retained, as per our Charter,

Constitution and Bylaws. Many a

conversation has passed between

Kalyan, Binota, Ken and Di over the

years as to the strengths and

weaknesses of Rotary and the

changes required for the betterment

of the organisation. The RC of

Freshwater Bay was a prototype for

this, not interested in the lowest

common denominator, as RIP Kalyan

says ‘Rotary is anything but

common”.

RI Changemaker Award

RI Pres. Kalyan Banerjee will

introduce a new recognition, the

Changemaker Award, to accompany

the Presidential Citation. The

Enhancing Rotary’s Vocational Service What is National Skills Week.

This year, National Skills Week 1-

8th October, will also coincide with

Rotary Vocational Service Month, to

promote the value of vocational

service and activities which focus an

ethical consciousness and

community awareness. As a result,

Rotary Down Under will be

partnering with National Skills Week

as a major collaborator in promotion

of vocational skills, activities and

events nationwide.

According to the recent

report Apprenticeships for the 21st

Century from January 2011;

NEW HORIZONS

Page 5: New Horizons Vol 4 Issue 5

Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, District 9455

“Australian Apprenticeships,

especially traditional trades are an

undervalued career choice and often

described in negative terms.”

One of the main aims of National

Skills Week will be exactly that: to

dispel the myth that a university

education is the only path to success,

and to raise the status of vocational

education amongst parents, teachers,

students, careers counsellors and the

wider community in general. Many

Rotarians have their own businesses

and are deeply involved in the

community – encouraging skills and

taking on apprentices are such

important factors in the continuing

development of our nation.

National Skills Week will encourage

the participation of all Rotarians in

various activities and events around

the country with the aim of

showcasing skills and trades. For

example, Rotary Clubs could stage

formal lunches for local businesses

and community members which is

hosted and catered for by hospitality

students and apprentices. Or Rotary

Clubs could look at enlisting the help

of local horticulture and landscaping

students to brighten up a local

landmark or memorial. Such

functions will considerably enhance

Rotary’s public image in

communities around Australia.

[[email protected]] or

telephone (02) 8080 0111 to find out

more and to get those activities

happening.
