This booklet contains the following panes printed by Cartor in litho. All phosphor bands are solid, non-gradated as expected with a litho printing.

Panes 1 & 4 have 2B phosphor; panes 2 & 3 have shaped phosphor.Pane 1 20p green x 4 + 54p brown x 2 + 62p red x 2 Machins +

A2B fluor; standard perfs C/L A2BMost of the Machin stamps from Panes 1 & 4 are new.

The 5p red brown is new, having been printed in litho previously by DLR.The 10p dull orange is new, having been printed previously in litho by both Questa & DLR.

The 20p light green is new, having been printed previously in litho by Questa. The 10p & 20p also use a new font with the 10p being slightly smaller and the "0" thicker,

and the 20p "0" also being slightly thicker - still the Matthews' font, but with a twist! The 22p olive brown has been printed by Cartor in litho previously in DP406 from

Treasures of the Archives PSB. However, this printing has a slightly deeper shade. The 54p chestnut is a new denomination and thus new.

The 62p rosine has been printed by Cartor in litho previously in DP406 fromTreasures of the Archives PSB. However, this printing is a much deeper shade.

Of particular note is the Garamond font used for some of these definitives as it does notconform to the Jeffrey Matthews Machins font. It is most striking on the 5p and 54p stamps.

Whether this is deliberate or a digital design accident remains to be seen. Our understanding of Royal Mail's policy was that the Matthews' font was sacrosanct.

Note the raised top to the "5", rather than the normal horizontal stroke, and the open topto the "4" rather than the normal closed top, and the spindly rather than thick figures.

The bottom of the "5" is also open rather than curved upwards. This can be seen from the following illustration from GSM, March 2010, page 39.

The Album Cover Commemoratives are also new as the sheet stamps are self adhesive, although they also appear in the minature sheet.

As with the Treasures of the Archives issue, they have been givenseparate catalogue status by Stanley Gibbons. Thus, they too are new.

Please note carefully that the M/S is designed to reflect a well kept yet aged albumcover. The discolouration, creases and rounded corners are part of the

printed design, so please not return these M/S as "damaged".

GB 2.2.10 Girl Guide Centenary M/SAdvice from the Machin Guru

GB Douglas Myall [Deegam] is tipping that the 5p ex the Album Covers PSB is likelyto be another ½p SBL. The 54p reappears in the next PSB making it less scarce.

The 5p is also a make-up value and has a low probability of reappearing. He is clearly speculating that the font changes were an accident and future Machin

fonts will revert to the normal Jeffrey Matthews designs. We agree, but time will tell.Canada 1.2.10 William Hall VCCanada 8.2.10 Roméo LeBlancGB 25.2.10 Olympic/Paralympics Retail Booklet No 2 (sa) W/G

Monarchs - House of Stewart (Scottish Kings) M/SGB New Booklet Codes

In what can only be described as a key philatelic find, UK dealer Norvic Philatelics has reported thediscovery by fellow UK dealer Alec Withell of new embedded codes in 5 self adhesive retail books.

The new code is MA10 and is in addition to the normal code which appears in the iridescent securitywavy overlay. The new code appears on the left of the Queen's profile just above her eyebrows

as can be clearly seen in the below Withell / Norvic scan. The normal code is to the right, as before. The books affected so far (as at 9.4.10), are:

6 x NVI 1st revised text "postcodes4free" (26.1.10) [codes MSIL / MA10]6 x NVI 1st - Olympics & Paralympics, book #2 (25.2.10) [codes MCIL / MA10]6 x NVI 1st - London 2010 Festival of Stamps (30.3.10) [codes MSIL / MA10]

12 x NVI 2nd new printing (??.?.10) [codes MTIL / MA10]12 x NVI 1st new printing (??.?.10) [codes MTIL / MA10]

All of this, of course, has been unannounced by Royal Mail and the last 2 books, which weresilently made available at Spring Stampex in cylinder booklet packs of 50, can not be expressly

ordered from Tallents House. This is very frustrating especially when they contain VISIBLE changes. We will endeavour to obtain some of the 2 unannounced versions in due course.

Myall {Deegam] will report on these in his June DGR and not issue a special report. In the interim, 2 self adhesive Machins with new codes are available:

Country DOI Description Band Print Perf No $ ¢The Garamond Typeface

GB Douglas Myall has now tracked down the reason for the incorrect "4" and "5" typefaceused in the Album Covers and The Royal Society PSBs earlier in the year.

Apparently the artwork sent to the printers for these 2 values was omitted in error.Without reference to Royal Mail, Cartor then attempted to match the Jeffrey Matthews'

typeface but picked the wrong one although they did manage to get the "p" right. So it was a Royal Mail error compounded by a Cartor error.

Myall reports that "processes" have been put in place to "ensure" this does not happen again. This strongly supports Myall's prediction of the 5p becoming another ½p SBL.

However, customers who wish to obtain further copies over and above their standing orderwith us, will have to buy the complete PSB.

Canada 12.2.10 Limited Edition Souvenir PackThis pack contains overprinted versions of the 3 M/S associated with the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Originally the M/S were available only from the gold, silver & bronze coins sets sold at C$49.95 each. Then CP decided to issue the 3 in a limited edition pack -- limit of 2 per customer + a $2 fee.

They were not supplied on standing order. When items are restricted or rationed, people find clever (but more costly) ways around this.We had to call in favours from some of our customers and Denese opened up a new account

and obtained her two, so we can now supply all our customers.CP has now decided to lift restrictions on a first-come first-served basis. Will these people never learn?

How would you feel as a passionate Canada STAMP collector if you decided to purchase thethree coin sets believing that this was the only way to obtain the o/p M/Ss?

And, as initially marketed, it was! Civility prevents us from publishing our feelings.Q2 10 DISPATCHGB Collectors

Unique Die CuttingA close examination of the kiss die cuts of Pane 4 reveals 2 interesting features:

The stamps are actually "attached" to the matrix, just like many self adhesiveSmilers stamps are "attached" to their labels.

This occurs on both the left and right of the "perforation" indent immediatelyabove the elliptical perforation. The indentation is not cut completely through.

You can see it with a 3x glass, but a 10x glass is better.Furthermore, the paper clip security cuts are new, being a mixture of the

previous types I & II.The top part of the security cut is closed, but the bottom half is broken at the bottom.

All stamps in the booklet are new.All commemorative stamps are new although they also appear in the miniature sheets.

As with previous PSB issues, they have been given separate catalogue statusby Stanley Gibbons as the PSB is the only source of the stamps.

[SG regards a M/S as a single unit and does not catalogue its contents; but bookletpanes apparently do contain stamps. Figure that one out!]

The NVI 1st scarlet London 2010 Festival of Stamps double head commemorativeis an exception as it is also available from sheets.

This has not been announced by Royal Mail, nor does it appear in any publicity -- yetanother clandestine issue. Why they persist with this stupidity is difficult to understand.
