Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 to 20 nationwide. In New Jersey, young drivers are also disproportionately involved in crashes. The term young driver in this report refers to drivers 17-20 years of age. The crash data used for this report was compiled from the crash record system maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT). The population data was obtained from the U.S Bureau of Census, 2006 population estimates.

In 2006, there were a total of 555,026 drivers involved in crashes in New Jersey. Of that number, 458,932 or 83 percent were reported with a known age. A total of 55,792 or 12 percent of those represented in a crash were young drivers. During the past five years, the num-ber of young drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes decreased by 5 percent from 58,681 in 2002 to 55,792 in 2006.

In 2006, there were 6 million licensed drivers in New Jersey. Young drivers accounted for 343,092 or 5 percent of the driving population. Graph 1 reveals the percent-age of licensed drivers and drivers involved in crashes by age group. In general, drivers under 36 years of age possessed the highest crash incident rate. The largest gap between the percent of involvement in crashes and licensed drivers was found to be drivers between 17-20 years of age.

Table 1 depicts the number of drivers involved in crashes by age group and the crash involvement rate per 100 licensed drivers. In 2006, for every 100 licensed drivers there were eight drivers on average involved in crashes. For every 100 young drivers that were licensed, 16 were involved in crashes or more than double the crash in-volvement rate. In addition, one out of six young drivers was involved in an automobile crash. By contrast, elder drivers over 70 years of age were at the lowest risk. For every 100 licensed drivers in this age group, five were involved in crashes.

The New Jersey map depicts young driver injury rates per 100 young populations by county. The statewide young driver injury rate is 14 per 100 population. The counties with the highest rates were: Ocean (20), Somerset (19), Cape May (18), Sussex (18), Monmouth (18), Warren

(16), Atlantic and Hunterdon (16). It should be noted that this rate doesn’t take into account an increased level of summer tourism in shore areas. By contrast, Hudson County had the lowest rate of 6 per 100 population.

with 2,929. During the five-year period, 22 percent of all young driver crashes occurred in this region. The first ten municipalities listed in Table 9 accounted for 33 per-cent of all young driver crashes in Region I.
