President’s message

As you all know our attendance in the Dana Point Whale Parade was canceled because the weatherman predicted rain. Once again he was wrong again, it did not rain only overcast in the morning. Seeing we had already canceled we did not attend. However to fill in the March gap, the club had one of the first BBQ’s of the year. Your board decided to have a multi meeting which included a Bar B Que, tech session, mini swap meet and a general meeting all rolled into one. Some of the things we asked at the board meeting how to get more members involved. So we came up with the idea that we hold the meeting at Pete DePaola’s house and make it a BBQ with the club providing the main course and all the fixing. The result was a great success almost thirty members showed up. Everything went perfect and we all had a great time plus filling their tummy's. We are going to plan more of this type of event again. The fourth of July parade has been set and Peggy Mione volunteered her back yard for the after parade for a Bar B Que gathering for all of the members. Of course it will include a traditional feast of hamburgers and hotdogs, plus drinks and all the fixings for you to enjoy the event. We will be asking for members to bring some yummy side dishes to share. IAs a reminder you do not have to be in the parade to attend the Bar B Que. You can come alone. With a spouse of a guest. Editorial For three days now I have been racking my brain to come up with something for an editorial article. I thought of writing something about the past event, the Bar-B-Que, but I was not there. Well maybe in sprit but living so far away I can only rely on those who still living in the Southern California area.

Living in Texas is just a bit too far to attend meetings. Relying on those members that do attend can be trying. Seeing I have two or three members who take pictures for me and one or two who are willing to write just went down, I can show the rest of the members who for some reason or not could not make it

It seems I can always entice someone to do my bidding. For example I get some members who say “I didn’t take any pictures because I did not bring a camera”. That is when I remind them they have a smart phone that takes excellent pictures.

So as you can see on the March event it all turned out well.

Welcome to the Sunshine Corner!

I have heard some news about some of our club members other than what I reported last month, I was told:

Lois Kniza is still receiving physical therapy for her broken wrist and is making progress. Dave Walsh is improving also and is now able to walk stairs. We are looking forward to him participating in the club's events in the future. Rita DePaola pulled a muscle & pinched a nerve in her back unpacking boxes from the recent move.

We wish all of our members a speedy recovery and a healthy year. If I have missed anyone, please give me a call and let me know how you are doing or if you have any planned surgeries.

Please don’t forget to keep me in the loop once you hear of anyone who is ill or is having or had surgery. We wish everyone good health, and stay safe! Until next month:

Irene Zaleski Sunshine Chairperson: Phone: 714-544-6698 Email: [email protected]

It turned out to be a little chilly but a bright sunny day and lots of food brought out about thirty of our members showed up to this event which was a combination of a board meeting, a get to know each other again, a tech session. We had several of our new members plus many old members all mixing it in. Fross brought a picture scrap book of the old old club which we all enjoyed viewing. After very little time went by we all got hunger pains for the great display of food that was brought by the members (pot luck) adding to that the club provided hotdogs and the fixing sodas water chips and chairs. What the board got from this was “WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DO THIS AGAIN?” We loved it was the parting words, so we have to do more of this type of events.

Take a Deep Breath and Focus! You may have heard of mindfulness after all, it has been around for thousands of years. But what exactly is mindfulness and why should you learn more about it? Mindfulness helps you to learn to calm your body to help you to cope with illness, pain and stress. Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) is a program that teaches mindfulness techniques to help you manage your stress. Highly stressed people are at the greatest risk for many health conditions. Mindfulness can provide you with tools for living with greater joy, depth, resilience and balance. A mindfulness practice helps you to focus only on things happening at the moment. It is being present for the moments of our lives, without striving or judging. By training your mind to focus on the current moment, you learn to let go of regrets from the past and worries about the future. Below are some compelling reasons from the Huffington Post why you might want to consider mindfulness.

It lowers stress.

It lets you know your true self.

It can make your grades better.

It protects against mental illness.

It helps the brain to have better control over processing pain and emotions.

It helps you to be a better person.

It could help the elderly feel less lonely.

It lowers depression.

It supports your weight loss goals.

It helps you sleep better. Walking A 15-minute walk after eating can lower your blood sugar level for hours, and significantly reduce your risk of diabetes. More important, taking a short walk after meals can be much more effective at preventing blood sugar spikes than taking one 45-minute walk daily. What better way to get started than National Walking Day on April 2? Stretching exercises Everyone is busy these days. Sometimes we barely have enough time to stop and eat. Studies show, however, that taking a short time to stretch everyday can improve your health. Stretching exercises, done properly, have many benefits, not just with athletes, but with everyone’s daily routine. Drink plenty of water You probably know the human body is about 66% water. But did you know that our muscles are 70-75% water? Our lungs are 90% water? And our brains are actually 95% water? It’s easy to see why water and hydration play such a crucial role in a healthful lifestyle. Water carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body, helps convert food into energy, protects and cushions vital organs, lubricates joints, regulates body temperature, moistens oxygen for breathing. The body can last up to six weeks without food, but only one week with-out water. Dry, itchy skin or headaches may be signs of dehydration. When you’re asleep you lose as much or more water as when you’re awake. You need as much water in cold weather as in warm weather. Many people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them. Whether it is mountain spring purified water, flavored water or even carbonized water 99% of bottle water sold today has removed one mineral that is essential to good health. In the 1950’s the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed recommendations for water

fluoridation. Then again in 1999 and again in 2007 reports show fluoridation of water is the best way to ward off tooth decay. Unfortunately bottled water does not have fluoride in it. As a matter of fact bottled water is NOT FDA approved. Recently the American Association of Dentist’s have indicated the rise of tooth decay in younger people due to the lack of fluoridation. One last note on water, drinking soda is actually counterproductive. Any caffeinated beverage is dehydrating Limit Alcohol Alcohol affects every organ in the body. Take a minute to rethink your drink. Know your limits. Drinking in moderation is

defined as having no more than 1 alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day for men.

Choose nonalcoholic beverages if you: o Are recovering from alcoholism or are unable

to control the amount you drink o May become pregnant or are pregnant o Plan to drive, operate machinery, or take part

in other activities that require attention, skill, alertness, and coordination

o Are taking prescription or over-the-counter medications that can interact with alcohol

o Have certain medical conditions o Are younger than 21

Garden Safely Gardening can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get physical activity, beautify the community, and grow nutritious fruits and vegetables. Take a few minutes to help stay safe and healthy while gardening. Put on protective gear as needed, including safety

goggles, sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, insect repellent, and sun screen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher.

If you’re outside in hot weather for most of the day you’ll need to make an effort to drink more fluids.

Make sure your tetanus/diphtheria (TD) vaccination is up-to-date. If it’s not, call your health provider to make an appointment to get it.

ASTHMA Under Control Nearly 25 million Americans suffer from Asthma, and it is the most common chronic condition affecting our children. The prevalence of asthma in the U.S. has been increasing since the early 1980s. Every day in America, children miss school, adults miss work and many visit the emergency room due to asthma. There is no cure for asthma, but it can be managed with proper prevention and treatment. Asthma is a disease that you are born with. Your airways are inflamed and very sensitive. Triggers cause changes that narrow the airways until breathing becomes difficult and stressful. Allergic (extrinsic) asthma is the most common form of asthma. It is triggered by inhaled allergens such as dust mite allergens, pollen, pet dander, mold, etc. Non-allergic (intrinsic) asthma is triggered by factors such as anxiety, stress, exercise, cold air, dry air, smoke, viruses or other irritants that are not related to allergies. Many of the symptoms for both allergic and non-allergic asthma are the same. Symptoms can include coughing wheezing, shortness of breath, rapid breathing and chest tightness. People with asthma react differently to triggers making each case of asthma unique. It is important for those with asthma to keep track of the factors that trigger asthma episodes to help you and your doctor develop an asthma management plan that is right for you. For people with asthma, having an asthma management plan will help you to be active and sleep without asthma symptoms, attend school or work regularly, and reduce visits to the hospital. The four parts of an asthma management plan are listed below. 1. Identify and minimize contact with asthma triggers.

2. Take medications as prescribed. 3. Monitor asthma and recognize early signs that it may be worsening. 4. Know what to do when asthma is worsening. Having an asthma management plans the best strategy for those with asthma to prevent symptoms. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America administers the asthma and allergy friendly Certification Program to help consumer’s make informed decisions when choosing allergen avoidance products. Look for the certified label to identify asthma and allergy friendly products. You can learn more about asthma, and find downloadable tools for patients and parents at www.aafa.org.

RAG TOP CARE

By Bob DePaola

A convertible top is a very costly item to replace. That is why you should take extra care if we want it to last. You can double or triple its life expediency by following a few simply rules. Fragile fabric tops were used on convertibles until the ‘50s. I think of these as raincoats made to be in the rain. When the sun is shining, you don’t leave your raincoat outdoors. You put it on a coat hanger in a dark closet. If it gets dirty you don’t put it in the washing machine or subject it to harsh detergents, you get it dry cleaned. Treat your fabric convertible to the same way you would an expensive rain coat. Keep your convertible top stored in a garage when not in use. Put a covering over the top to keep dust off of it. If you have a car cover, put a top covering under the car cover. Do everything possible to keep dust off

the top so you don’t have to clean it as often. When you do clean it, use a hand vacuum cleaner or soft bristle brush. If this doesn’t remove all the dirt, use an upholstery cleaner or rug cleaner. Such cleaners are sprayed on as a foam. If the top is not too dirty, you can later lift the dirt off by vacuuming again or use a damp (not wet) sponge. It in not necessary to use an auto upholstery or carpet cleaner. Products designed for household furniture will work just as well and they are cheaper. Carefully follow the directions on the can. If there are spots on the fabric, they should be removed with a dry-based spot remover after the top is cleaned. Try not to wash a top with detergents. They leave residues that will rot the fabric and the stitching. I have heard some say that detergents can be rinsed with a hose, but hose pressure is hard on the top. A top may get so much ground in dirt that you will want to wash it. Use a very mild detergent. There are some auto-top cleaners on the market that work well with water. If you water wash, do it infrequently. To save your top, never put it down, except in a show or the exercise the mechanism a few times a year. When you raise and lower it, you are wearing on the fabric. If you lower the top, be sure it is carefully folded so the bows do not pinch the fabric. Protect the lowered top with a cover and make sure it is clean before folding. Do not store a car cover with a top lowered for long periods. Raise the top when you put it back in the garage. Fabric tops were replaced by more durable vinyl tops. Vinyl is not easily damaged by detergents but the stitching can be. If you must wash a vinyl top, use a mild detergent and rinse toughly. The methods of keeping dust off fabric tops also applies on your vinyl top. Also use a vinyl protectant such as Formula A2001. If you have the opportunity to protect your convertible top—whether it's vinyl or fabric—do it the very first day you bring it home, before it has a chance to get dirty. Pay special attention to the stitching. Manufacturers use poly-cotton thread—

comparatively weak, and always the first thing to go. The stitching needs a UV sealant or protectant, if it's to hold things together for any amount of time. If you never did, now would be a good time to start. It is never too late to protect your convertible top.

When brushing tops, go in the direction of the seams to avoid breaking stiches. Clean a plastic rear window with a sponge saturated with cold water. If spots on the plastic won’t come off with a mild detergent and water, leave them. Rubbing with chemical-soaked rag may make it worse or ruin the entire window. Regardless if you’re top is attached or removable, once it is reclined or removed. We all experience the unmatched awareness of the outdoors, the rush of the wind, the warmth of the sun and find ourselves one with nature. So here to tops down to you!

Owners of Ford’s Thunderbird from around the world will be sharing their iconic cars with the public on “Thunderbird Appreciation Day” Sunday, May 20th, 2018. The three large Thunderbird clubs: International Thunderbird Club (ITC), Classic Thunderbird Club International (CTCI) and Vintage Thunderbird Club International (VTCI) are encouraging their members to take their Thunderbirds out, individually or in groups, to places for the general public to see, to learn more about and to just plain enjoy. With over 4 million Thunderbirds produced by Ford Motor Company from 1955 to 2005, it is still not common to see a Thunderbird on the road today, even later models. This is the reason that the three Thunderbird clubs have agreed on Sunday, May 20th as a day to share their Thunderbirds with the world. For a vehicle that has been out of production for over a decade, their presence is still felt worldwide. Thunderbird owners can be found all over North and South America as well as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and Europe. Thunderbird owners are asked to share pictures and stories that occur during Thunderbird Appreciation Day on ITC’s Facebook page. If you are not a Facebook page. If you are not a Facebook member, you can still share your pictures by emailing to ITC [email protected].
