A vision of students today

They [digital natives] have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones and all the other toys and tools of the digital age…

It is now clear that as a result of this ubiquitous environment and the sheer volume of their interaction with it, today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors.

Digital natives & digital immigrants

Text your message to 0416906973 or visit http://tinyurl.com/nextlife107

Digital Immigrants find it hard to believe their students can learn successfully while watching TV or listening to music, because they (the Immigrants) can’t.

Digital Natives think randomly, are able to multi-task, and concentrate in shorter and more intensive bursts.

Natives are always ‘on the move’

The digital divide

Text your message to 0416906973 or visit http://tinyurl.com/nextlife107

… our teachers who are digital immigrants see the technology as a series of ‘programs’ or ‘things’ or – in linguistic terms – nouns.

Today’s students, if they are ‘native speakers’ of digital technology view it in a very different way. They see technology as the means of getting things done: of communicating, of sharing, of presenting, etc. In linguistic terms our students see technology as verbs.

Marc Prensky

Net natives

Assumptions underlying Prensky’s view on students:

● All (young) students are ‘Digital Natives’.

● These ‘Digital Natives’ are an homogenous group.

● These ‘Digital Natives’ are more adept with technology than their teachers.

● Everyday skills with technology will easily translate into beneficial technology-based learning.

I have five or more friends who I met on the ‘net. I check my email first thing in the morning. When going out in town I check the web for suggestions/directions. I share my digital photos online for friends and family to see. I post comments on other people’s blogs. I have my own blog that I update regularly. I am a member of at least one social networking site. I often chat with friends/colleagues via instant messaging software. I often share amusing websites/videos with friends and family. I don’t watch live TV, but record it and watch it when I like. I met my partner online

Well, I started out rough, but I was also totally off-kilter. And then, within the first two minutes, I started hearing rumblings. And then laughter. The sounds were completely irrelevant to what I was saying and I was devastated. I immediately knew that I had lost the audience. Rather than getting into flow and becoming an entertainer, I retreated into myself. I basically decided to read the entire speech instead of deliver it. I counted for the time when I could get off stage. I was reading aloud while thinking all sorts of terrible thoughts about myself and my failures. I wasn’t even interested in my talk. All I wanted was to get it over with. I didn’t know what was going on but I kept hearing sounds that made it very clear that something was happening behind me that was the focus of everyone’s attention.

The digital divide is not just about access.

It is about also about participation.

The digital divide?

The digital divide?

Text your message to 0416906973 or visit http://tinyurl.com/nextlife107

The digital divide is less about access to technology and more about the difference between those who know how and those who don’t know how.
