Even bibles need to be examined before choosing which to use or buy. For example, the bible I was given at my ordination had commentary in it that undermined all of the supernatural claims of the bible. People have actually taken the time to produce bibles that will, in effect, make sure that you don’t believe what your bible says. As it has been said, people are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. With all of this biased presentation of information, we may be tempted to think that we can’t know truth or trust anything. I don’t believe that is true. We certainly may have a hard time finding the truth on certain current affairs because they have taken place during a time when people aren’t careful with the truth. However, this has not al- ways been the case. And there are, indeed, people who are still careful with the truth even today. It gets easier to believe that we can apprehend truth, particularly about historical issues, when we realize that the undermining of truth is a relatively recent development. It began in academic circles, generally universities, where the Post- Modern worldview sought to push out the Modern worldview, which itself had pushed out the traditional biblical worldview.

I have developed a strange new habit lately. As many of you know, I am a night person. I stay up late to read, watch tv, build models, or play video games. Recently I have been watching Netflix while scrolling through Pinterest looking at posts of random facts and “did you knows?” I have always enjoyed trivia, and this pastime truly is trivial. I have “learned” some very interesting things. I say “learned” because I am not sure that much of

it is actually true. I am sure that some of it is, but there are times when I see things that I know aren’t true listed as facts, so then it calls into question the veracity of the rest of these supposed nuggets of knowledge. Many of the various posts share some of the same facts, but the details are different, which makes them feel more like urban legends than anything else.

As I have gone through so many of these posts of random and surprising facts, I have thought about other sources of “information” which are available to us. We have a crisis of reliable news and information in America. Cable news channels and the major network broadcasts consistently show themselves to be pushing an agenda. The information is filtered in such a way as to make you interpret it in light of what they want to accomplish by sharing it in the first place. This has helped give rise to alternative news outlets, generally on the internet. These alternative sources of news are hard to verify, and also seem to be written either by hardcore conservative or liberal writers.

When I was young, encyclopedia salesmen still traveled door to door with Encyclopedia Britannica or Compton’s Encyclopedia. These resources were usually more concerned with general information than with biased commentary. Now we have the internet, and the standard encyclopedia is akin to the rotary phone- young people don’t even believe it existed. Instead of encyclopedias, the popular resource is Wikipedia. Again, this is not a trustworthy source of information. Anyone can edit and add information or remove things which they disagree with. While there are some restrictions, and the changes are reviewed by Wikipedia employees, they can’t be expected to know everything about everything to catch blatant falsehoods. While I haven’t done a thorough search of topics on Wikipedia (though my brother and I have edited some pages by adding jokes), the information posted about most Christian topics is information that comes from skeptical sources, with the traditional view- the one accepted for the better part of 2000 years- being completely left off.

However, this has not al-ways been the case. And there are, indeed, people who are still careful with the truth even today. Giving to the Spreading of the Gospel In 2012, New Life Anglican Church invested in a commitment to support the MossyFoot Project in Ethiopia. Now five years later, we as a church, continue that commitment through prayer and financial support. In the Spring of 2017, the church was able to donate $978.00 towards treatment kits desperately needed for those suffering from MossyFoot. These treatment kits consist of some basic items easily acquired here in the states, but far out of reach in Ethiopia for those living in poverty.

When a person suffering from MossyFoot visits a clinic, they are given basic medical treatment and then receive a small kit consisting of bleach, soap and anti-fungal ointment to take with them. Every time the patient returns to the clinic, they not only receive healing treatment for their feet, but also spiritual healing. The MF staff gives them hope through their sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The patients then go back to their village retelling others about God’s grace and sharing with them what a difference he has made in their lives.

As 2017 comes to a close, please consider making a financial donation to the MF Project through New Life Church. In January 2018, we will then divide the total donations and as a church body begin a monthly distribution to the Project in effect showing our continual support throughout the year.

As you consider your donation, please remember that through this lonely and painful disease, God is using it for good. Thousands of people have come to Christ though this project and despite various setbacks, the MF staff has been able to persevere and press on in their mission with God’s continual help.

Thank you in advance for your continued support in helping to spread the Gospel for those who have yet to hear it.

Modernism stated that the only truth we can know for sure is that truth which can be derived from scientific study. This was a reaction to theology and philosophy as legitimate sources of information. For the modernist, religious truth isn’t truth at all, and philosophy is little more than ivory-tower theorizing with no practical implication. Thus, modernists decided that information which could be observed by science and/or verified by the senses was all that we could determine to be true.

Post-Modernism responded to Modernism’s assault on truth by denying that scientific truth is really truth as well. So, we went from a biblical worldview that asserted all types of knowable truth (and affirmed that all truth- whether scientific, theological, or philosophical- is God’s truth), to Modernism, which said that only certain truths could ever be known, to Post-Modernism, which said that nothing can be known for sure. That is the day in which we live. Examples of the impact of Post-Modernism are the following: news isn’t reported. Instead, one person gives the basic information, and then two parties argue for their biased interpretation. The implication being that each one has the right to their own interpretation, as if there is no true interpretation of information. From a scientific standpoint, we have returned to homeopathic or ancient remedies and cures for illness and conditions because our faith in the scientific work (and the motives) of the pharmaceutical companies has been undermined by Post-Modernity. Interestingly, if all of these natural remedies actually worked, then we would have never had need of the pharmaceutical industry. And the fact that we have treatments and cures for so many things that used to kill people, combined with a significantly longer lifespan, attests to the fact that modern medicine has actually accomplished that which the natural remedies never could- successful treatment for diseases.

We don’t even realize that we have been affected by, or have been brought up within these skeptical worldviews. This will undermine our ability to even find truth in the pages of scripture which are supposed to be God’s holy word. For many, they believe that any interpretation is fine because we can’t know the meaning, which is the typical Post-Modern view.

However, most of Christian history has not been marked by such skepticism. People didn’t spend their time writing books full of falsehoods to undermine our trust in truth. Truth was handled carefully and even when there were disagreements, there was a belief that some view was in fact true (whereas Post-Modernism would question whether any view is really true). The people who passed down the scriptures to us were careful with the bible as truth. They didn’t alter it to suit their biases; but they sought to have their own views altered by the apprehension of God’s word and his truth.

History was done the same way. Today, people write about history to give their view of the events; their interpretation of it. In the past, history was an attempt to adequately record what was actually true. While mistakes were certainly made, the intention of accurately retelling events meant that the events were generally reflected with accuracy. When we look at the books of Luke/Acts in the bible, Luke, the author, was intending to relay historical information to his audience. This is obvious by the amount of details he provides in those books for the purpose of placing them into known history. Luke didn’t see himself as passing on an interpretation of history. He saw himself as gathering reliable information and then passing that information on so that others could know things that are true.

All of this is to say that, while our current cultural climate makes us skeptical of truth claims, historically, people valued truth and handled it carefully. Thus, when we use historical data and resources that come from those points in time, we can get a clearer picture of what is true. I would rather trust the notes and commentary on scripture, for example, that is based on historical documents and records written by people who believed in truth, than use the commentary written by modern critical scholars whose only intention seems to be to convince us that we can’t really know any truth about history or the bible at all.

I know this is a long article (Tracey asked me to fill space), but my goal is to encourage you that we can know what is true. God hasn’t just left us to guess and figure things out. God is a God of truth, and thus, this current age of skepticism is actually evidence of mankind’s rebellion and rejection of God. God has given us the bible with significant reason to believe that it is true. He has given us faithful witnesses throughout the ages who have passed on events faithfully so that we can know and learn from the past. And he has given us his Spirit of Truth so that we will seek truth, and so that we can find it, because, as I said earlier, all truth is God’s truth.
