UK spy chiefs emerge from shadows to blast Edward Snowden

London, 8 Nov — Britain’s intelligence chiefs used their first ever joint public appearance to complain that documents leaked by former US intel-ligence operative Edward Snowden had put secret operations at risk and were being “lapped up” by al-Qaeda. In an unprecedented evidence session before parliamentarians that local media likened to a scene from a James Bond film, the heads of Britain’s three main intelligence agencies said Snowden’s disclosures about mass surveillance had prompted them to consider being more open about what they do.

But they said parts of their work had to remain secret for national security reasons and that the data leaks, which detailed Brit-ain’s close cooperation with the US National Security Agency (NSA), had caused huge damage.” They’ve put our operations at risk,” John Sawers, the head of MI6, Britain’s foreign intel-ligence service, told a par-liamentary committee.”It’s clear that our adversaries are rubbing their hands with glee, al-Qaeda is lapping it up.” The robust nature of his comments underlined how angry intelligence chiefs are about Snowden and what they believe is

the irresponsible way some newspapers published his information despite warn-ings not to do so.

Civil liberties groups, parts of the media and law-makers from all parties have argued that Snowden’s dis-closures about the scale of government monitoring shows it needs to be reined in and security agencies put under greater oversight. Iain Lobban, the director of GCHQ, Britain’s electronic eavesdropping agency, told lawmakers that intelligence chiefs were “actively con-sidering” whether more information should now be shared with the public.

Singapore Prime Minister’s Office web page hacked

Singapore, 8 Nov —The official website of the Prime Minister’s Office of Singapore was hacked late Thursday by apparent members of international hacker group Anonymous, the Infocomm Develop-ment Authority of Singa-pore said on Friday. The attack came after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong vowed to hunt down cul-prits who launched cyber-attacks on Singapore.

The Infocomm Devel-opment Authority said ear-ly Friday that “a subpage for search on the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) website was reported to be compromised” at 11:17 pm on Thursday. “A vulner-ability in that subpage was exploited to display pages from other sources. This

vulnerability is known as cross-site scripting,” it said. The subpage of the website once showed a mocking headline “It’s great to be Singaporean today” next to a Guy Fawkes mask, a sym-bol of anti-establishment de-fiance. The main website of the Prime Minister’s Office is still working, the author-ity said.

It added that it is work-ing to restore the page that has been compromised and that investigation is ongo-ing. Apparent members of Anonymous recently uploaded a video message threatening to attack the information infrastructure of the Singapore govern-ment, urging it to reconsider a regulatory framework that requires influential news portals to be licensed. The

websites of local daily Straits Times and a second-ary airport were hacked. Lee said on Wednesday that Singapore authorities will “spare no effort” to track down culprits who launch cyber-attacks even though they think they can hide behind the Internet’s veil of anonymity. “It is not a laughing matter. It’s not just anything goes, and you’re anonymous, there-fore there’s no responsibil-ity. You may think you are anonymous.

We will make that ex-tra effort to find out who you are,” he said.Lee ac-knowledged that no cyber security precautions are perfect, but the govern-ment is making efforts to boost the systems to reduce vulnerability. — Xinhua

US Secretary of State John Kerry

Kerry warns of violence if peace talks fail

amman, 8 Nov — US Secretary of State John Kerry said here on Thurs-day that talks between the Palestinians and Israelis have been difficult so far, warning that if they fail there will be violence in the region.

Speaking at a Press conference in Amman, Jordan, Kerry told report-ers there is no alternative

to peace between the Pal-estinians and the Israelis, stressing that the alternative to peace will be more con-flict in the region.” Pales-tinians and Israelis need to take peace talks seriously... In spite of obstacles, talks have been difficult but also productive,” said the US of-ficial, who is charged with mediating between the two sides.

On Syria, Kerry said the US administration was working closely with Rus-sia to end the crisis in the country. Kerry said he seeks to address

the crisis during the Geneva II conference, which will be held within the com-ing days, stressing that the situation in Syria has seri-ous consequences on the entire Middle East region. Jordanian Foreign Minis-ter Nasser Judeh, who met with Kerry on Thursday, said that commitment to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative will help ensure security for all including Israel.

The Jordanian official added the international community should expedite efforts to hold the Geneva II conference, calling for in-

creased aid to Jordan so it could more effectively

deal with the large number of Syrian refugees who fled their country into the Kingdom.

The State Depart-ment will soon make the announcement of his trip, which may also include stops in Beijing and Tokyo.

It would be King’s sec-ond visit to the region in less than three months. In late August, amid King’s visit to Northeast Asia, the State Department an-nounced his plan to visit North Korea to secure the freedom of Kenneth Bae, a

Korean-American Christian missionary arrested in No-vember 2012.

However, Pyongyang then abruptly withdrew the invitation. King’s im-pending visit to South Ko-rea has prompted specula-tion that he may again try to visit the North to secure Bae’s release on the oc-casion of Thanksgiving, which falls on 28 Novem-ber this year.

But the source said it remains unclear whether King will get an invita-tion from North Korea this time, the report said.

Bae was arrested after arriving as a tourist in the port city of Rason, near North Korea’s borders with Russia and China, and ac-cused of “hostile acts.” He was sentenced in April to 15 years of hard labour.

Astronomers find first asteroid with six comet-like tails

Washington, 8 Nov — US and German astrono-mers said on Thursday they have found for the first time an asteroid with six comet-like tails of dust in solar system’s asteroid belt. Unlike all other known asteroids, which appear simply as tiny points of light in space telescope, this asteroid, designated P/ 2013 P5, resembles a rotat-ing lawn sprinkler, accord-ing to astronomers who are puzzled over the space rock’s unusual appear-ance.” We were literally dumbfounded when we saw it,” lead investigator David Jewitt of the University of California at Los Angeles, said in a statement. “Even more amazing, its tail struc-tures change dramatically in just 13 days as it belches out dust. That also caught us by surprise. It’s hard to believe we’re looking at an asteroid.”

P/2013 P5 has been ejecting dust periodically for at least five months. Astronomers said that it is possible the asteroid’s rotation rate increased to the point where its surface started flying apart and the tails are unlikely to be the result of an impact with

another asteroid because they have not seen a large quantity of dust blasted into space all at once. Scientists using the Pan-STARRS survey telescope in Hawaii announced their discovery of the asteroid on 27 Au-gust.

The multiple tails were discovered when Hubble was used to take a more de-tailed image on 10 Septem-ber. When Hubble looked at the asteroid again on 23 September, its appear-ance had totally changed. It looked as if the entire struc-ture had swung around. “We were completely knocked out,” Jewitt said.

Careful modeling by researchers in Germany showed that the tails could have been formed by a se-ries of impulsive dust- ejec-tion events. They calculated that dust-ejection events oc-curred on 15 April , 18 July , 24 July , 8 August, 26 Au-gust and 4 September and that radiation pressure from the Sun stretched the dust into streamers.

So far, only about 100 to 1,000 tons of dust, a small fraction of P/2013 P5’s main mass, has been lost, the researchers said.

Trove of Adobe user data found on Web after breach: security firm

neW York, 8 Nov —A computer security firm has uncovered data it says be-longs to some 152 million Adobe Systems Inc user accounts, suggesting that a breach reported a month ago is far bigger than Adobe has so far disclosed and is one of the largest on record. LastPass, a pass-word security firm, said on Thursday that it has found email addresses, encrypted passwords and password hints stored in clear text from Adobe user accounts on an underground website frequented by cyber crimi-nals.

Adobe said last week

that attackers had stolen data on more than 38 mil-lion customer accounts, on top of the theft of informa-tion on nearly 3 million accounts that it disclosed nearly a month earlier. The maker of Photoshop and Acrobat software con-firmed that LastPass had found records stolen from its data center, but down-played the significance of the security firm’s findings. While the new findings from LastPass indicate that the Adobe breach is far big-ger than previously known, company spokeswoman Heather Edell said it was not accurate to say 152 mil-

lion customer accounts had been compromised because the database attacked was a backup system about to be decommissioned. She said

Scientists say new dinosaur found in Utah is relative of T. rex

neW York, 8 Nov — Scientists in Utah say they have discovered Ty-rannosaurus rex’s “great-uncle,” a massive predator with a thick skull and large teeth dubbed the “king of gore.” Bones of the 24-foot (7.3-meter) -long dinosaur, slightly smaller than T rex and older by about 10 mil-lion years, were unveiled at the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, and an announcement of the species discovery was published in the scientific journal Plos One. Scien-tists hope the find will help them better understand the ecosystem where the preda-tor roamed. Discovered by workers for the Federal Bu-reau of Land Management in eastern Utah in 2009, scientists named the ani-mal Lythronax argestes, or “king of gore,” for its large teeth and apparent domi-nance as a predator.

evolution of the group that gives rise to T rex, which is something we didn’t un-derstand before,” said Mark Loewen, a geologist at the University of Utah, who led the dig for the new dino-saur. “Lythronax is like the great-uncle of T rex.” Pale-ontologists have thought that members of the group with characteristics like T rex — large bodies, tiny arms, thick skulls and for-

ward facing eyes — dated as far back as 70 million years, but the Lythronax shows signs of being at least 80 million years old. Cambodia records 973 critically endangered white-shoulder ibis

Phnom Penh, 8 Nov — Cambodia has recorded some 973 white-shoulder ibis in its wild, making the country the stronghold for this critically endangered species, the conservation-ists group said on Thursday. BirdLife International and its partners including Cam-bodian Forestry Adminis-tration, People Resources and Conservation Founda-tion, Wildlife Conservation Society and Worldwide Fund for Nature, imple-mented a coordinated sur-vey of 59 white-shouldered ibis roosts at sites across Cambodia.

The consortium launched four monthly cen-suses of this species over the wet season and the Sep-tember counts produced a staggering 973 individuals, the group said in a press re-lease. “These results once again confirm that Cam-bodia is the stronghold for the white-shouldered ibis and that it contains the most globally significant popula-tion of this critically endan-

gered species,” the release said. It added that the result followed nearly a decade’s conservation work by in-ternational and local NGOs and government agencies. “Conservation actions, such as nest protection to improve chick survival, may have contributed to this increasing number but the population increases observed are mainly due to increased survey effort and better knowledge of roost locations,” it said.

Many of the roost loca-tions are either outside of protected areas or in threat-ened protected areas and the future of this species is far from certain, said Hugh Wright, an expert on this species from the Univer-sity of Cambridge. “Many of these birds are at risk of losing their habitat from imminent changes in land use and currently more than 79 percent of the birds were censused on roosts outside the boundaries of legally protected areas,” he said. The counts have identified

western Siem Pang Pro-posed Protected Forest as the most important site for this species globally, with 451 individuals — equal to 41 percent of the global population — followed by Lomphat Wildlife Sanctu-ary with 298 individuals.

However, both of these sites are threatened by Eco-nomic Land Concessions which will destroy key nesting and foraging habi-tats for this species, he said.Other key sites in the na-tional census include Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctu-ary in Preah Vihear prov-ince, Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province and the Mekong Flooded Forest in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces.

FDA seeks to ban trans fats in processed foods due to health risks

Boston/Washington, 8 Nov — The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday proposed ban-ning artificial trans fats in processed food ranging from cookies to frozen piz-za, citing the risk of heart disease.

Partially hydrogenated oils, the primary dietary source of the fats, have been shown to raise “bad”

cholesterol. Reducing the use of trans fats could pre-vent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease a year, the FDA said.” While consumption of potentially harmful arti-ficial trans fat has declined over the last two decades in the United States, cur-rent intake remains a significant public health concern,” FDA Commis-

sioner Margaret Hamburg said. Public health advo-cates welcomed the move.”

Artificial trans fat is a uniquely powerful promoter of heart disease, and today’s announcement will hasten its eventual disappearance from the food supply,” said Michael Jacobson, execu-tive director of the advocacy group Centre for Science in the Public Interest.

The FDA’s proposal is not the first public effort to ban trans fats. New York City banned the use of trans fats in restaurants, includ-ing their use for deep-fry-ing foods, and many restau-rants and fast food chains, including McDonald’s Corp, have eliminated their use. Some European coun-tries have also taken steps. Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland regulate the sale of many foods containing trans fats.

Products that still con-tain trans fats include some varieties of crackers, refrig-erated dough, coffee cream-ers and ready-to-use frost-ing, among others. Some products will be harder to reformulate than others, FDA officials said.” We know that technically this is not an insoluble problem,” Hamburg told reporters on a conference call, adding that the use of trans fats has declined dramatically since 2006, when the agency re-quired that trans fat levels be disclosed on package la-bels.—Reuters

Honda’s Fit becomes Japan’s best-selling car in October

tokyo, 8 Nov — Hon-da Motor Co’s Fit compact car became the best-selling car in Japan in October for the first time in two and half years thanks to the popu-larity of its fuel-efficient hybrid version after it was fully updated in Septem-ber, industry bodies said on Thursday.

The hybrid model of the Fit, which is Japan’s most fuel-efficient car in its class apart from plug-in hy-brids, sold 23,281 units, up 149.8 percent from a year earlier, as supply caught up with swelling orders after production initially lagged behind, said the Japan Au-tomobile Dealers Associa-tion and the Japan Mini Ve-hicles Association.

US probes electrical steel products from five foreign

countriesWashington, 8 Nov

— The US Commerce De-partment announced on Thursday that it initiated trade probes into imports of electrical steel products from five foreign countries. The products under investi-gation are cold-rolled and flat- rolled alloy steel prod-ucts used in electric power industry, whose technical name is non-oriented elec-trical steel, the department said in a statement. The in-vestigations are in response to a request from AK Steel Corporation, a steel pro-ducer based in the US state of Ohio.

It alleged that those electrical steel products from countries including Germany, Japan, the Re-public of Korea, China and Sweden were sold below the fair value of the prod-ucts in the US market at dumping margins ranging from 16 percent to 407.52 percent, and those from China and the Republic of Korea received improper government subsidies. The

department launched the anti-dumping duty inves-tigations against the prod-ucts from the above men-tioned five countries and countervailing duty inquir-ies against products from China and the Republic of Korea.

The International Trade Commission (ITC), the US trade authority, was scheduled to make its pre-liminary inquiry determina-tion around 6 December. The probes will continue if the ITC determines that the imports of electrical steel products from the five countries materially injure or threaten the domestic industry of the States. The Commerce Department will then make its determination of improper dumping or subsidies early next year. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has kept urging Washington to abide by its commitment against pro-tectionism and help main-tain a free, open and just international trade environ-ment. — Xinhua

Los angeLes, 8 Nov — Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) reported a 12 gain in profit that beat Wall Street expec-tations, lifted by higher vis-itor spending at US theme parks, increased consumer product sales and its sum-mer animated movie hit “Monsters University.” The media company on Thurs-day posted diluted earnings per share of 77 cents for the quarter ended in Septem-ber, edging the 76 cents av-erage estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reu-ters I/B/E/S. Net income for the quarter rose to $1.4 billion, a 12 percent gain a year earlier.

Shares of Disney, which have gained nearly

35 percent this year, slipped 1.8 percent in after-hours trading to $65.94, down from their earlier $67.15 close on the New York Stock Exchange. Inves-tors reacted negatively to a prediction from Disney Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo, on a post-earnings conference call, that capital expenditures will increase by $1 billion over 2013, said Needham & Co ana-lyst Laura Martin. Most of those funds will go toward increased investment in the Shanghai Disney Resort scheduled to open in late 2015, Rasulo said.

“The company had been saying that the capital expenditures were going

down,” said Martin, who rates Disney stock a “hold.” “Markets look ahead,” he added. For the just-ended quarter, operating income at Disney’s cable network unit, which includes its powerhouse ESPN sports channel, decreased by 7 percent to $1.3 billion in the quarter, the company said, citing the timing of some ESPN affiliate fee revenue. Despite taking an undisclosed writedown for its summer flop “The Lone Ranger,” Disney’s movie studio reported a 35 percent rise in earnings during the quarter, boosted by Pixar prequel “Monsters Univer-sity.” The film generated $743 million in worldwide ticket sales, according to the site Box Office Mojo.

Preterm children face greater risk of retinal detachment later in life

Washington, 8 Nov — Children born extremely prematurely face up to a 19 times greater risk of retinal detachment later in life than peers born at term, a study in the US journal Ophthal-mology said on Thursday. In the first large population-based, long-term investi-

gation of the association between preterm birth and later retinal detachment, researchers determined that birth before 32 weeks is associated with increased risks of retinal detachment in childhood, adolescence and young adult life.

The findings indicate

the need for ophthalmo-logic follow-up in children and adults born extremely and very prematurely, the researchers said. The re-searchers used Swedish na-tionwide population regis-tries of more than 3 million births from 1973 to 2008 to identify subjects born pre-

maturely, who were then separated into two groups: those born between 1973 and 1986, at which point a national retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screen-ing programme was estab-lished, and those born be-tween 1987 and 2008.

US President Barack Obama

Obama apologizes for Americans losing insurance due to Obamacare

Washington, 8 Nov — US President Barack Obama on Thursday said sorry to Americans who are losing their current health insurance plans as a result of the president’s signature health care overhaul that is aimed at expanding the country’s health care cover-age.

“I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on as-surances they got from me,” Obama said in an in-terview with NBC News. “We’ve got to work hard to make sure that they know we hear them and we are going to do everything we

can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as a consequence of this,” he said.

The Obama admin-istration has been under fire following reports that some Americans, who buy insurance on their own, have received cancellation notices from insurers or are at risk of being forced off their current plans that do not meet the new stand-ards of the Affordable Care Act, often dubbed as Obamacare.

Obama has repeated his assurances that “if you like your health plan, you will be able to keep your

health plan” with the im-plementation of the Af-fordable Care Act, the country’s largest health care reform in decades.

Obama’s comments also came as the federal government’s health care team has been working around-the-clock to fix the online health care market-place plagued with techni-cal problems since its de-but on 1 October.

US Health and Hu-man Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius made her apology last week before lawmakers for the technical problems of the HealthCare.gov, an online

marketplace for affordable insurance plans.

The online market-place serves as the cen-terpiece of the Affordable Care and aims at getting millions of uninsured and underinsured Americans

enrolled for health care coverage. But after its de-but on 1 October, the web-site has witnessed high-profile failures and almost out of service during the first two weeks.

Fazlullah as new leader

islamabad, 8 Nov — The Pakistani Taleban on Thursday named Mul-lah Fazlullah as their new leader, almost a week af-ter former Taleban chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan’s tribal area.

Asmatullah Shaheen, who has been leading the Taleban since Mehsud’s death last Friday, held a telephone Press confer-ence telling reporters that a 17-member advisory coun-cil of the Tehreek Tale-ban Pakistan had elected Fazlullah, also known as “Mullah Radio” for his firebrand speeches on clan-destine radio in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, to lead the group.

Fazlullah was the driv-ing force in the establish-ment of an Islamic system in North Swat and led an insurgency there from 2007 to 2009. He fled to Afghani-stan in 2009 following an army operation, but was present in Waziristan for Thursday’s election, ac-cording to Shaheen.

Sheikh Khalid Haqqani has been appointed deputy leader. Following the ad-visory council meeting, the Taleban said Mehsud’s death will be avenged in Prime Minister Nawaz Sha-rif’s home province of Pun-jab and no peace talks will be held with the govern-ment, despite recent efforts by Islamabad to start nego-tiations.

ence which was held on Thursday afternoon and after their test report was hand over on Tuesday to representatives of the late Palestinian leader’s widow

Suha Arafat and the Pales-tinian National Authority, Patrice Mangin, director of the University Centre of Legal Medicine Lausanne-Geneva (CURML), told reporters that the investiga-tions can not exclude that the polonium is the cause of the death of Arafat, but the results can not conclude that Arafat was poisoned.

Mangin noted that sev-eral factors such as the long delay between Arafat’s death and the start of inves-tigations made analysis dif-ficult, having said that they had to work on samples partially destroyed. Arafat died at a French military hospital in 2004 from an undisclosed or unknown condition. World powers to consider sanction relief for Iran: White House

Washington, 8 Nov — The six world pow-ers negotiating with Iran would consider offering limited sanction relief if Iran takes concrete steps to halt its nuclear activi-ties, the White House said on Thursday.

The six countries, namely the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, would consider “limited, targeted and re-versible relief” that does not affect their core sanc-tions architecture in ex-change for concrete, verifi-able measures to address their concerns about Iran’s nuclear project, said White House spokesman Jay Car-ney at a daily briefing.

“That core sanctions architecture would be maintained until there is a final, comprehensive, verifiable agreement that resolves the international

community’s concerns,” said Carney, who also warned that if Iran does not live up to its commit-ments, relief would be terminated, and the world powers would ratchet up the pressure even further by adding new sanctions.

Delegates of the six world powers, known as the P5+1 group, started another round of nuclear talks with Iran in Geneva, Switzer-land, on Thursday.

In the two-day talks, the world powers are ex-pected to seek a “ first step” deal with Iran on solving the nuclear problem, though both sides say an agreement is far from certain. In the previous round of talks, held on 15-16 October, Iran proposed a plan as a basis for negotiation but details of the proposal were not disclosed.

UN advisory group sparks debate on Security Council reform

neW York, 8 Nov —The president of the UN General Assembly’s newly appointed advisory board to address Security Council reform sparked off a range of reactions on Thursday during the annual debate on the contentious issue that has plagued member states for decades. The main point of contention is how dif-ferent camps, who diverge on how to restructure the powerful 15 member coun-cil, interpret the group’s objective. General Assem-

bly President John Ashe explained in remarks how efforts to “reinvigorate” the hotly contested debate resulted in forming the new six member group “to as-sist me in identifying ways by which the process could move forward.”

In a letter to all 193 member states in late Oc-tober, he explained how the “purpose (of the group) is to produce a basis for the start of the intergovern-mental negotiations that re-flects the ideas put forward

in the negotiations so far, and also identifies available options.”Also in that let-ter he re-appointed Afghan Ambasador Zahir Tanin, as the chair of the intergov-ernmental negotiations, a position which he will now hold for six years in a row. Speaking on behalf of the Group of Four — which includes permanent seat as-pirants, Japan, Brazil, India and Germany — Japan’s Ambassador Motohide Yo-shikawa welcomed Ashe’s new move to include the

ambassadors of Belgium, Brazil, Liechtenstein, Pap-ua New Guinea, San Ma-rino and Sierra Leone as his advisors.” We, the G-4, firmly believe that the work of the advisory group will enable the intergovernmen-tal negotiations to move to text-based negotiations,” he said.

Yoshikawa also re-ferred to the G-4 group’s willingness to take part in “collective actions” to search for “common ground.” —Kyodo News

Street kidsEither at bus stops, eateries on crowded

streets or at stations in Yangon, you can see street kids, whose age range from four to twelve or thirteen, begging money or foods. Some peo-ple would give them money without second thought at their request but does it help?

Usually, street kids have a home in slum ar-eas or shanty towns, but the appalling financial hardship of their families compels them to live in the streets all day, doing what they can to earn money, often begging. But not every street kid is a beggar; some older children work as a scavenger to feed themselves or help support their families.

In some cases, homeless and/or abandoned children are fostered and exploited by the mind-er, who himself has grown on the streets, firstly begging and then doing odd-jobs. Fortunately, the fact that child beggars here have complete body parts indicates that Myanmar does not have gangs that kidnap children and force them to be beggars.

Meanwhile, many missing-child advertise-ments in newspapers earlier this year suggested a worrying sign for safety of children. Some media outlets tried to present investigative re-port on the cases of missing children, which then faded away amid more important politi-cal issues. Whether they run away or being kid-napped or being trafficked or have been found back is unclear.

Street kids, being on the fringes of the soci-ety, are largely excluded from government-pro-vided education and social safety net. There is a free compulsory primary education system in place, but it is clear that many school-age chil-dren including street kids do not have access to it.

Giving them a few pennies may alleviate some suffering for a day in the life of a street kid, but what about when those pennies are spent? Again, people view child beggars as part of organized groups, headed by criminals and thus face a moral dilemma over whether to give some money to them for fear that it would in-directly encourage those driving child-begging business. These destitute kids deserve a long-term solution that tackles the root-cause of the problem.

Senior diplomats of Japan, China and South Korea meet to discuss ways to promote cooperative ties in Seoul on 7 Nov,

2013.—Kyodo News

S Korea, Japan, China to make joint effort for

trilateral summitSeoul, 8 Nov — South

Korea, Japan and China agreed on Thursday to make efforts to arrange a trilateral summit at a time their relations remain frosty over contrasting percep-tions of wartime history and territorial disputes. The agreement was reached at a meeting in Seoul of senior diplomats from the three countries, according to a statement released by South Korea’s Foreign Ministry. But the three nations failed to agree on when to hold such a summit.

“At today’s meeting, participants recognized the importance of a summit

among the three countries and agreed to make joint ef-forts toward that end,” the statement said. South Kore-an Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Kyung Soo, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Shinsuke Sugiyama and China’s Vice Foreign Min-ister Liu Zhenmin headed their respective delegations to the meeting.

The gathering of the three countries’ high-rank-ing foreign ministry offi-cials came amid tensions over the Japanese-adminis-tered Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

China has said it will not hold a summit or other

high-level talks with Ja-pan unless Tokyo recog-nizes there is a “territorial dispute” between the two countries over an uninhab-ited cluster of islets in the East China Sea that are known as Diaoyu in China and the Senkakus in Japan. South Korea’s ties with Ja-pan have become frostier over their interpretations of wartime history and a dis-pute over the sovereignty

of South Korean-controlled islets in the Sea of Japan known as Dokdo to South Koreans and as Takeshima to the Japanese. At Thurs-day’s meeting, “the three countries agreed the trilat-eral cooperative system is an important framework of cooperation needed to preserve peace, stability and common prosperity in Northeast Asia,” the state-ment said.—Kyodo News

China’s panda breeding hits record in 2013

Chengdu, 8 Nov — A total of 49 panda cubs were born in China this year, with 42 surviving, mark-ing a record for giant panda breeding in the country, ac-cording to experts at an in-ternational panda protection conference on Thursday in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The number of captive-bred pandas in

China this year has doubled the number from last year, said Zhang Hemin, director of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, at the ongoing International Symposium on Giant Panda Conserva-tion Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Chengdu City from 7 to 12 November .

According to a report released in November 2012 by the Committee of Gi-ant Panda Breeding Tech-niques, 28 giant panda cubs

were born in 2012, and 20 of them have survived. With the development of breeding technology, the number of captive-bred giant pandas around the world has risen to 376 in 2013 from 341 last year, an increase of 10.3 percent, ac-cording to Zhang.

China will gradually increase the number of

captive-bred pandas and continue research on releas-ing them to the wild, Zhang said.

The conference, spon-sored by the State Forestry Administration, has attract-ed about 200 representa-tives from over a dozen countries’ zoos, govern-ment departments, embas-sies in China, and China’s panda protection organiza-tions to discuss issues con-cerning giant panda protec-tion.

Architects call on gov’t to scale back new Tokyo

stadium planTokyo, 8 Nov — A

group of around 100 people led by architect Fumihiko Maki filed a petition on Thursday with the govern-ment to review and scale back the planned New National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The initiative, co-sponsored by art critic Shuji Takashina, political scientist Takashi Mikuriya, anthropologist Shinichi Nakazawa and others, takes issue with the design potentially spoiling the landscape in Tokyo’s Meiji Jingu Gaien area, a major urban green space in Japan.

“Given a total floor space double to triple the past main Olympics venues such as London and Ath-ens, we are also concerned about its costs for safety, maintenance and manage-ment,” says the petition presented to the sports min-istry and the Tokyo metro-politan government. The group, consisting chiefly

of architects, called on the authorities to modify the stadium’s scale to one that would be appropriate for an aging society experiencing a declining population and urged the government to fully explain about the pro-ject to the nation.

The group also request-ed that stadium capacity be reduced from the planned 80,000 permanent seats to a combination of around 50,000 permanent seats and temporary seating. The government plans to reno-vate the existing National Stadium into an all-weather facility with a retractable roof. The new stadium was designed by a British-Iraqi architect chosen through an international competition. It will be built on a 113,000 square meter site, about 1.6 times larger than the cur-rent site, and will have a total floor space of 290,000 sq. meters, about 5.6 times larger than the existing sta-dium.— Kyodo News

Thai premier urges protesters to disperse,

amnesty bill off agendaBangkok, 8 Nov —

Thai Prime Minister Yin-gluck Shinawatra urged anti-amnesty bill protesters to disperse on Thursday, saying that the amnesty and related bills have been withdrawn. In a second special televised speech in a week, Yingluck said the amnesty bill and also other related bills were withdrawn from the House of Representatives on Thurs-day.

“I want to urge the pro-testers to end the rally...I don’t want the rallies to keep continuing since it could af-fect our economy, tourism as well as confidence from foreign investors,” she said. The premier reiterated the bill was aimed at helping people who suffered after the 2006 coup that toppled her brother as prime minister and charged the “distortion” that the government wanted to help those who faced cor-ruption charges was not true.

Yingluck also insisted the government would not use military force to crack down on groups of people gathered at several places to protest the bill. “I assure the government will not use violence against people, we wish to have peace in our country...the rallies would be taken care of by police, not soldiers,” she said. On Thursday, lawmakers voted to withdraw six drafts of am-nesty and reconciliation bills from the agenda, 310 to one, while the Senate postponed its schedule for discussion on the amnesty bill. From March to May 2010, 91 peo-ple, including protesters and soldiers, were killed during “Redshirt” antigovernment protests in central Bangkok by people who were mostly supporters of Thaksin Shi-nawatra who was toppled as prime minister in a bloodless military coup in 2006.

Leader of notorious extortion group in

Philippines arrestedManila, 8 Nov —The

leader of a notorious extor-tion group in the southern Philippines that authorities believe had initial links with the Southeast Asian terror group Jemaah Islami-yah has been arrested, po-lice said on Thursday.

Jabide Abdul of the Al-Khobar group, which authorities say has been responsible for several extortion-related bomb-ings since 2006 in parts of Mindanao island, was arrested on Tuesday in Mindanao’s Sultan Kudarat, police said in a statement, adding 31 peo-ple were killed and 145 were injured in the attacks.

National police chief Alan Purisima said the ar-rest of Abdul — who had a 3.3 million peso (about $76,750) bounty on his head due to multiple mur-ders and attempted murders

— is a “significant devel-opment in the continuing campaign against organized crime and terrorism.”

Many of the Al-Kho-bar group’s attacks were on bus companies in Mindanao who refused to give in to the group’s threats of blow-ing up buses unless they would pay money.

The police said, “The group was allegedly cre-ated in support of Jemaah Islamiyah and foreign mili-tant Jihadists groups,” with the particular mission of “concentrating on explo-sive component use and extortion schemes across the Cotabato province (in Mindanao).”

“The group eventually transformed into a kidnap-for-ransom gang, and much later, into the extortion group that it is today,” the police added.

OPEC’s share on world oil market on the wane

VieNNa, 8 nov — the share of the organization of petroleum exporting Coun-tries (opeC) in the world oil market would decline by almost 8 percent through to the year of 2018 due to the rise of the shale energy, a publication by the organiza-tion declared on Friday.

It is the first time for opeC, with the headquar-ters in Vienna, austria, to make such an acknowl-edgment about shale en-ergy’s growing impact in the world oil map, said the world oil outlook, an an-nual report of the group.

the report said that opeC sees less demand of its crude in the next five years, and the demand for crude of the group, which produces about 40 percent of the world’s oil output, will fall by 1.1 million

barrels a day to 29.2 million barrels a day between 2013 and 2018.

oil production from shale formations in the us and Canada is estimated to climb to 4.9 million barrels a day in 2018, compared with the estimate of 1.7 million barrels a day in last year’s report.

opeC, however, doesn’t seem to worry about the pressure from shale oil, as it estimates the output of the shale is expected to decline after the year 2020, citing challenges including a rapid output decline from wells, the environmental concerns and rising costs.apart from shale, growing non-opeC crude supplies would also serve as a factor to the organization’s weak-ened impact in the world oil map. — Xinhua

‘Glee,’ Bullock and Perry lead People’s Choice nominees

Los AngeLes, 8 Nov—Television musical series “Glee” on Tuesday led the nominees for the annual fan-voted People’s Choice Awards, while actress San-dra Bullock and pop sing-ers Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake each scored five nominations.

Fox’s “Glee” picked up eight nominations for the only Hollywood awards show covering film, music and television that is voted on solely by the public.

The People’s Choice Awards ceremony, set for January 8 in Los Angeles, kicks off the Hollywood awards season, which cul-minates with the coveted Academy Awards, or Os-cars, on March 2. The Peo-ple’s Choice winners are chosen by fans, who can vote online across 58 cat-egories spanning film, TV and music starting Thurs-day through 5 December.

“Glee” scored nomi-nations for best network

TV comedy, while its stars Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Jane Lynch and Lea Michele each won nomi-nations in the comedy act-ing categories. England keep faith with Hart, call up Saints trio

London, 8 Nov — Eng-land manager Roy Hodgson backed goalkeeper Joe Hart to regain top form but will take the opportunity to look at understudies Fraser For-ster or John Ruddy in this month’s friendlies against Chile and Germany.

Hart, dropped by Man-chester City after a series of mistakes, will start one of the World Cup warm-ups

at Wembley stadium, with England hosting Chile on November 15 and Germany four days later.

Hodgson called up un-capped Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez for the first time, one of three Saints players in the 28-man squad along with fellow frontman Rickie Lambert, who has scored twice in three inter-nationals, and winger Adam

Lallana.Hart has been left out of

Manchester City’s last two matches but Hodgson said he would only be worried by the situation if the 26-year-old was still out of the team and not playing regularly by next March or April.

“It is November. He made a mistake or possibly two mistakes. As a result of those mistakes the (Man-

chester City manager) Ma-nuel Pellegrini has made his decision,” Hodgson said on Thursday.

“I would be a lot more concerned if Joe Hart never got his place back and if in the spring of next year when I have to select the 23 play-ers he was a constant reserve. But I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

“But he is such a good goalkeeper he will get back in the team.”

Hodgson said prepara-tions for next year’s finals started now, and there was no time to celebrate getting there.

“We’re looking for-ward to Brazil. We only have three games before I name the squad so this preparation period is very important. It is preparation, not celebration.

“It does temper my thinking because I am trying to achieve a balance of play-ers who have not played so many games giving players a chance to show what they can do and keeping together a group of players that need

to play together.”Southampton’s excel-

lent start to the Premier League season has been re-flected with the inclusion of Rodriguez and Lallana, while defender Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse were named in the Under-21 squad.

Former Under-21 player Nathaniel Clyne, South-ampton’s right-back, is also on Hodgson’s radar and the manager explained: “You have to give an awful lot of credit to Southampton be-cause of course in the past they have provided some very important players to the Premier League, not least Gareth Bale, the world’s most expensive player.

“It proves the value of a good academy system and perhaps more young English players will come through at other clubs.”

Rodriguez, has been capped once for the Under-21s and midfielder Lallana has figured at U-18, U-19 and Under-21 level.

Liverpool’s Jordan

Henderson, whose style was criticised in Alex Fergu-son’s recent autobiography, returns to the squad as does his Anfield team mate Glen Johnson who has been miss-ing because of injury.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who is nursing yet another ankle injury, is in the squad but was being monitored on a daily basis.

Woods is like gold dust to Turkish organizers

AntALyA, 8 Nov — Tiger Woods is worth his weight in gold to the inau-gural $7 million Turkish Airlines Open and to sport in the country in general, the president of the national golf federation said on Thursday.

Businessman Ahmet Agaoglu is a huge fan of the world’s number one golfer and said he cannot speak highly enough of Woods’s contribution this week.

“I’ve been involved in sport one way and another

for nearly 42 years and I describe Tiger as the best athlete of all time,” Agaoglu told Reuters in an interview during the opening round of the European Tour event being staged in the city of Antalya.

“You may not agree with me but that’s my per-sonal opinion. Whatever you pay for an athlete like Tiger it is not much considering what he brings, and believe me, he is not asking for much.”

MYANMAR TVThree arrested for kidnapping 12-year-old girl in Tokyo

Tokyo, 8 Nov — To-kyo police have arrested three men for allegedly kidnapping a junior high school girl in Ota Ward on Wednesday evening and asking for a ransom of 20 million yen from her fam-ily. The 12-year-old girl was safely taken into police custody after she was found roughly three hours later in a car with two of the sus-pects that was pulled over in a neighbouring city by a police officer who did not know about the kidnapping but was looking out for cars with stolen number plates.

The Metropolitan Po-lice Department identified the men as Ryunosuke Taba, 23, and Genki Miyagi, 24, both unemployed and from Okinawa Prefecture, and Hiroaki Hata, a 43-year-old company employee from Saitama Prefecture. The police suspect that Miyagi and Hata forced the victim

to get into their car on a street in Tokyo’s Ota Ward at around 5 pm and Taba called the girl’s home us-ing a pay phone around 6:50 pm demanding 20 million yen in ransom. Miyagi and Hata have admitted to the charges while Taba has said he did not know about the ransom demand, according

to the police. The police said the three men got to know each other through the In-ternet and do not know the girl as they said they picked her up randomly. The girl’s mother, who responded to the ransom request over the phone, called the police around 7:05 pm, the police said.—Kyodo News

Prices of 1,000 items in Rakuten mall may have been misleading

Tokyo, 8 Nov — On-line shopping mall operator Rakuten Inc said on Thurs-day that prices on about 1,000 items offered in its marketplace in connection with bargain sales com-memorating the Rakuten Eagles professional baseball team’s winning of the Japan Series title may have been

misleading.The company said

price indications by more than 20 stores in the past bargain sales, including the latest one conducted between Sunday night and early Thursday, were prob-lematic and that it temporar-ily closed those stores in the online shopping mall. For

example, a store in Hokkai-do claimed in the Rakuten mall that 10 cream puffs produced by a Kyoto com-pany are normally priced at 12,000 yen and sold the item at 2,600 yen, indicat-ing it is 77 percent off the regular price, according to sources familiar with the matter.—Kyodo News

Webber in no mood to slow down after Formula One

Sydney, 8 Nov—Mark Webber has no in-tention of coasting when he calls time on his 12-year career in Formula One at the end of the sea-son and is determined to put Porsche back on top of the podium at Le Mans sooner rather than later.

The 37-year-old Aus-tralian revealed in June he had signed a multi-year deal to race for the Ger-man marque in the World Endurance Championship, the centrepiece of which is the 24-hour endurance classic in France.

And while Webber said he would miss For-mula One — although not perhaps his Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel —

at the Yas Marina circuit on Yas Island, on 2 Nov, 2013.

his competitiveness nature will not allow him to slow down.

“I’ve got those memo-ries. They’re great and I re-ally enjoy having those,” he told Australia’s Channel 10 TV.

“But to look at the next chapter, I can’t put my feet out of bed each morning with no super purpose - I still need to do something. I can’t turn racing off and just finish.”

Webber has twice been entered to race Le Mans but failed to complete a lap. His engine failed in 1998 and in 1999 his Mercedes flipped into the air twice in practice and the team withdrew for safety reasons.

Porsche’s record at the

Circuit de la Sarthe is much better with 16 wins, includ-ing seven in a row from 1981 to 1987.

Audi have dominated since the turn of the cen-tury, though, and Webber’s new team will have their work cut out on their return to the top class next year.

“I am looking forward to this embryonic stage to them returning to the race in which they have been so successful in the past,” Webber said.

“They’ve got the re-cord for the most wins at Le Mans and I am looking forward to working with them in the future and keep-ing my adrenaline ticking over.”

To add a Le Mans suc-

cess to his twin triumphs in one of motorsport’s other great races, the Monaco Grand Prix, would be some achievement, he thought.

“I love that circuit, I love driving at night to the limit,” he added.

“It’s human nature to want more, obviously I want to win Le Mans, to put that with the Monaco ... that would be nice.

“Whether one is enough there, maybe I want to grab a few. But of course you’ve got to get the first one done, which won’t be easy. “So that’s the first goal, to win Le Mans, win that outright down the road. And then we’ll go from there. Still enjoy the race”
