Greetings from the Executive Director

Welcome to 2019! I am here to tell you how proud and humbled I feel to lead a forward-thinking place

like the Senior Center of West Seattle. Established in 1971 by caring community members, the Center has provided enrichment and social services to thousands of area seniors over the decades. No other organization in West Seattle offers more inclusive and expansive opportunities to help people live rich, healthy, and fulfilling lives as they age. I am so happy when I see new and current members and partic-ipants enjoying our classes, getting to know each other in Margie’s Café or joining

friends for lunch in the Junction Diner. The best part of my job is spending one-on-one time with you and hearing your stories and sharing in your joy.

Our Center is a lifeline for many of us, who want to connect, engage, find vital resources, enjoy lifelong learning, and just have fun. So whether you are new to the Center or have been

part of our family for many years, this is your place, your home away from home, your safe place to come and be yourself and enjoy the over 50 programs and services that we have to offer. Welcome and thank you for being part of our family! 2018 Achievements 2018 saw many noteworthy accomplishments. The Center received the West Seattle Not-for-Profit of the Year award by the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, a huge honor to be sure. We began our first year of partnering with Sea Mar Community Health Centers to end isolation and increase so-cialization for our local Latino population, serving 49 new friends since June. With lead sponsor Nucor Steel, Board Member Co-chairs Carol McClure and Amy Lee Derenthal, the amazing talents of our own Mary Beth, and effective team of Board Members and volunteers, we organized the most suc-cessful Annual Spring Breakfast in the Center’s history. Under the leadership of Aylene, our Stop N’ Shop thrift store has had another great year and remains the single largest source of financial support for the Center. Our innovative and cutting edge programming, led by Cherie, has kept the Center humming and included our hugely successful entomology class, our new Westside Dance group, and Toni’s diabetic support group, just to mention a few. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Sara, created a fantastic cruise-themed volunteer appreciation party, which over 100 of our 250+ volunteers attended. At this event, we presented the First Annual Jean Carroll Outstanding Volunteer Service Award to honor Jean for her many years of service to the Center. This award will now be given annually to a volunteer who displays these same exemplary characteristics. Under the expertise of our own Burke Dykes, we updated our computer lab with state of the art equipment result-ing from a Tech Matching Fund Grant from the City of Seattle. And we have updated Margie’s Café, thanks to the funding from our Board of Directors and King County’s VSHSL Levy. Rainbow Bingo’s success continues and it is in its fourth year of selling out two months in advance, due to the fo-cused dedication of our Board and Mary Beth. We partnered with our own West Seattle Lion’s club to have our first ever crab feed and it sold out in three weeks! Get your tickets early for this year’s happening January 19.

Mayor Jenny Durkan just recently paid us a visit and was delighted to meet many of you! What a great day that was, just as it has been an incredible year for us. We will continue to work hard to be sure you, our members, and participants have the best “Home Away From Home” ever!

Cheers to an amazing 2019!

Volunteer extraordinaire - Charlie StrongWhen Charlie was young, he always got musical instruments for Christmas. One year his mom rent-ed him a trumpet-she really wanted him to play the trumpet! Finally, when Charlie was about eight years old, he received a ukulele for Christmas. This was a good fit for Charlie. Music has always been a big part of his life. Charlie has lived in West Seattle since 1945. He retired from Boeing after 32 years of doing art and drafting there. He spent several years playing guitar three or four nights a week in a band – they all dressed up as pirates and had a great time carousing around town!

In the summer of 1995, Charlie was asked to join The UKES, Unique Kind of Entertainers. This group was started by local musical legend, Ray Johnston, in 1995. It was a natural progression for Charlie to take over the UKES in 1999, when sadly, Ray passed away. Since then, the UKES have been playing together here at the Center for a Sing-along on Mondays at 1pm. Originally, the group averaged about eight to twelve players. Then, a couple years back the Seattle Times ran an article featuring the UKES and after that, the group

doubled in size! About a month ago, they had 31 players – the largest group ever! The group plays music out of the four song books that Charlie has compiled over the years. These books have been a group effort. They started with a group of songs from Ray’s library that was supplemented with his handwritten Dixieland arrangements. Charlie added words and chords to these arrangements. The books have been added to over the years by people from the group, The Seattle Ukulele Players Association, and The Edmonds Ukulele Group. Charlie says he has enough songs for two more books!

If you haven’t already met Charlie, stop in on a Monday at 1pm and you will find him, as well as some wonder-ful ukulele entertainment! When Charlie is not playing music, you can find him working on his beach cabin in Copalis and spending time with his seven grandchil-dren and his five great-grandchildren.

Charlie and The UKES play around town at communi-ty centers and retirement communities. Charlie says, “We play for food, like Jimmy Buffet said, I will play for Gumbo!” You can catch The UKES performing on January 17th at Brookdale on 35th in West Seattle.

Driving Companions Program

Sound Generations has a new pilot, Driving Companions Program! Tuesday, January 15th, SCWS from 10:30 AM- 1:30 PM. We’ll be answering questions and handing out client and driver applications! If you are unable to attend, contact us at 206-268-5747 or [email protected].

What’s the Driving Companions Program? DCP is a client and volunteer run program. Volunteers use their cars to drive clients, and DCP reimburses them for the miles they drive. Clients and drivers self-schedule for maximum flexibility. You can go to a movie, senior centers, shopping, social services, medical appointments, and more! What are the requirements? -Clients must be able to get into and out of a vehicle on their own, be at least 60 years old, and able to sched-ule their own rides with their driver. -Drivers must be at least 25 years old, have their own vehicle, hold a WA driving license, and have a clean driving record for the past 2 years. What’s the difference between DCP and other transportation services? -DCP lets you go anywhere, anytime, and it is completely free. You aren’t limited to just medical trips or a certain timeframe like most other programs. Want to go see friends in Lynnwood on Saturday night? That’s great! We’ll reimburse your driver. -DCP is client-centered. We do not provide volunteers for clients, but we do help clients find drivers in their network: friends, neighbors, members of your gym or religious community, etc. DCP lets you offer them mileage, parking, and toll reimbursement; volunteer experience; and supplementary auto insurance. Know someone in your social network with a car? Have a friend that already drives you on occasion? That’s a great opportunity to sign up a driver.

Toni’s TipsMost of us over a certain age are familiar with osteoporosis, bone loss that can increase

the risk of fractures and disability, and we know what we can do to keep our bones strong through weight-bearing exercise and good nutrition. But have you heard of

sarcopenia? It is a decline in skeletal muscle that occurs with age, and like osteo-porosis, it can lead to functional decline and loss of independence in older adults, including the ability to carry out the tasks of daily life. Sarcopenia can begin as early as age 40 and gets worse without intervention, leading to a loss of as much as half of muscle mass by age 70. It’s also associated with many chronic illnesses,

fatigue, loss of balance, and falls.

That’s the bad news! The good news is that no matter how old or out of shape you are, you can restore much of the strength you’ve lost through strength/resistance training

(which may also increase bone density!). Research has documented that resistance training significantly enhanced physical abilities of frail nursing home residents in their 90s and increased their own muscle mass. If you’re cur-rently a couch potato or have a serious chronic illness, get the okay from your doctor before you start an exercise program.

Once you have your doctor’s approval, you can begin a strength training program using free weights, machines, or resistance bands. If you want to join a gym, a certified trainer can help you develop a program that is suitable for your age, health status, and current level of fitness. Also, community centers often have weight rooms, and staff can assist you, or you can join a class. If you prefer to work out at home, you can buy inexpensive weights at a sporting goods store. Be sure you start slowly and increase repetitions gradually to avoid injury. Take rest days in between workout days.

In order to add and maintain muscle mass, you also need adequate nutrients, especially lean protein and fruits and vegetables. A nutritionist can help you determine how many grams of protein you need every day based on your body weight and level of activity. So if you have any health-related goals for the New Year, perhaps you can use some of this information to reach them!
