2013 JurIED BIEN-NIAL IS FuLL OF SurprISES...On exhibit April 6 through July 21, the fourth Dubuque Museum of Art Biennial Juried Exhibi-tion features exciting works of art by some of the most talented artists in a 200 mile radius of Dubuque. Under the leadership of Peg Hudson, Chair of the Museum’s Marketing & Membership Committee, the Museum’s efforts to advance it’s public image has been a multi-faceted effort. It not only included the development of a new logo, but it also included upgrading and raising the aesthetics of publications like this newsletter as well as adding value to our membership and all of our programs.

Our new logo is a great new repre-sentation of what the Museum stands for - a proud burst of colors, an artistic interpretation of our building’s wonder-ful architecture, and a clear statement of who we are - the DUBUQUE MUSEUM of ART. We love this new look and hope you will, too. If you haven’t already, you’ll start to see this new look on all of our publicity materials.

As for our publications, the Museum has long struggled to have our newsletters, exhibition announcements and other

publications reflect the professional-ism and aesthetic that we bring to all of our other efforts. With the professional designs from McCullough Creative, some great new software and a burst of excitement from our staff and patrons, we think we’re finally putting out publi-cations that reflect who we truly are.

Last, but certainly not least, we’ve taken a hard look at our membership levels and benefits. Our goal has always been to provide our members with great val-ue, but we’ve taken this opportunity to make our Museum Memberships more valuable than ever. We’ve changed some of the names of our member-ship levels to better reflect our values, and now your membership allows you free admission daily, free access to our Members-Only Exhibition Previews and a whole host of other great perks - too many to print here. Please go to the Museum’s website, www.dbqart.com, to see a complete list of the benefits you’re now able to enjoy.

NEW LOOK, continued...

As many of our visitors have noticed, since January of this year, the Museum has implemented a modest daily admis-sion policy.

Why the change? There are several factors that led to this decision. Over the last few years, the Museum has focused heavily on increasing the quality and the frequency of all of its programs. Just within the last 12-18 months, the Museum has begun outreach programs to local shelters, senior centers and facilities for the disabled. We’ve started classes for toddlers, home-schooled youth and our popular noon-time art history class for adults. All of these

efforts as well as our other important programs cost real dollars, and it is our hope that the admission income will al-low us to expand these initiatives while continuing to bring world-class art to our community everyday.

We also have been keen on increasing the value for you, our members. Your membership now allows you free daily admission and many other great ben-efits. Of course the Museum is still work-ing to reduce barriers which is why we’ve continued our long-standing partnership with Prudential to have the Museum free EVERY Thursday and everyday for those 18 and under.

Why Charge Admission?

CURRENT EXHIBITS

MARGARET WHITING:Art and the EnvironmentKRIS MOZENA MCNAMER GALLERYMARCH 22 - JULY 7Margaret Whiting is an Iowa artist who creates paper sculptures, collages, and installations from discarded law books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, science books, maps, and card catalogs. She uses her artwork to explore contemporary issues related to land use and encourages thoughtful consideration of the laws that regulate American society’s impact on the land.

A native of Minnesota, Whit-ing now lives and works in Waterloo, Iowa. She gradu-ated in Medical Technol-ogy from the University of Minnesota and received a BA from the University of Northern Iowa. She worked as a medical technologist in hospital laboratories and has taught workshops in pa-permaking and bookmaking. Whiting has participated in numerous regional, national, and international exhibitions.

THOMAS MORAN, GrAnt WooD & rECEnt ACQUiSitionSLENGELING GALLERYApril through SeptemberThe Museum is once again proud to present two ex-traordinary works by Thomas Moran. On long term loan to the Museum, Grand Canyon of Arizona at Sunrise and The Venetian Lagoon are two masterpieces by one of America’s most influential painters. Having been in a private collection for over 70 years, this is a rare opportuni-ty to see these works by one of the world’s great landscape painters.

The Moran paintings will be accompanied by a selection of new acquisitions to the DuMA Permanent Collection by artists Max Ernst, Don Gla-sell, Persis Weaver Robert-son, Charles Schroeder, Nor-man Zepeski, Carl H. Johnson Jr., and Ellen Wagener. Of course, we always have a rich variety of works by our beloved Grant Wood. Be sure to see one of our newest additions to our Grant Wood collection, Worker with Pick and Shovel, Cedar Rapids. Painted circa 1919, this work gives a unique glimpse into Wood’s early career.

INSIGHT GALLERY: Artwork from the Dubuque Community School DistrictGLAB CHILDREN’SGALLERYOngoing through May, 2013Since January of this year, the Museum has begun a new initiative in partnership with the Dubuque Community Schools. Our new Insight Gallery gives the Museum the opportunity to regularly exhibit artwork by the many talented young student art-ists in our community.

Each month, the Museum will feature work from 2 to 3 area schools. The artwork is chosen and installed by the school’s art teacher, and families are able to visit the gallery for free everyday.

This exhibit runs through May, and we anticipate continuing this meaningful effort when school resumes in the fall.

At publication time, the Museum is featuring work from Kennedy & Lincoln schools, and coming in May, we’ll welcome Sageville & Eisenhower.

FAMOUS DEAD ARTIST SERIES

FEATURING:Paul Gauguin

BIR TH:June 7, 1858 in Paris

DEATH:May 8, 1903 in the Mar-quesas Islands, French Polynesia

Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin is one of the artworld’s most perplexing figures. His artwork is beloved around the world for its use of color and unique style, and his work influenced many during his lifetime and after including Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse. Yet Gauguin’s personal struggles often bring his legacy a certain air of infamy. Failed relationships and friendships, fleeing to Tahiti and alleged sexual exploits with prebuescent island girls make his life story a complex juxstipostion with his extraordinary artwork and artistic influence.

As the focus of our 16th installment of our Famous Dead Artist Series, Gauguin’s life and artwork will come to life once more. Local actor Andrew Fuerste Henry will portray this complex character with another stun-ning script created by the Museum’s own Margaret Buhr.

FROM THE BoArD:A note from incoming Board President Chris-tine Schiesl

PArtnErS oF DuMA

What an exciting time it is at the Dubuque Museum of Art. our new look, new logo and new member-ship benefits represent the energy and enthusiasm building at the Dubuque Museum of Art. it seems logical that we would have bursts of color to represent the excite-ment around our newest exhibi-tions, expansion of our collections and strong educational programs.

But what has not changed, is our mission to continue to reach and add value to our community. Whether it is partnering with the Dubuque Community Schools, outreach programs to local shelters or offering noon time art history classes, the DMA board has a commitment to make a lasting impact in our growing community.

We hope you will join us on this journey and watch as the role of the arts within our community ex-pands and strengthens the lives of our members and those through-out the tri-state area.
