Why New Marston?

What makes our school different?

• We spend time getting to know the individual needs and abilities of our children. Our curriculum is tailored around the pupils’ interests so as far as possible, the pupils help to choose the topics we teach. We believe this is the key to inspiring and motivating our learners.

• We teach our pupils to be independent learners. We encourage our pupils to be fully involved in their learning and their successes and teach them the skills to problem solve and continually strive to achieve.

• We want our pupils to be responsible. Pupils are given special responsibilities across the school, for example as Prefects in Year 6, making school decisions in the Eco and School Councils, being Community Stars (helping out in the community) and being House Captains.

• Our staff are committed to continually developing their own skills through training and visiting other classes and schools. We also encourage regular feedback on how

Teaching and Learning What is successful teaching? Successful teaching:

o starts from what the pupil already knows and draws on their experience and interests,

o translates the school’s aims together with the requirements of the National Curriculum and Religious Education into clear learning objectives planned with regard to continuity and progress,

o has the highest expectations of the learner, o celebrates success, provides motivation and emphasises active, participating

learning, o finds the time to nurture individuality, imagination and creativity, o uses effective assessment to monitor and evaluate its success.

What is effective learning?

Effective learning: o matches the needs of both the individual and society, o is adaptable so that it can be applied in different situations now and in the

future, o provides the learner with skills and enthusiasm for further learning.

What is a learning environment?

To ensure effective use of resources all staff: o make full use of our extensive grounds and well-proportioned classrooms, o have high standards of classroom management, o teach the children how to take good care of the fabric of the school,

Page 10: New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019...New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019 A warm welcome from the Headteacher – Tracey Smith New Marston Primary School has

o provide appropriate well-labelled storage, o teach the children how to look after and care for equipment, o teach children how to use materials properly

What is effective assessment?

Assessment and testing provide us with the information to evaluate our success as teachers, the quality of the content of our curriculum plans and the relative success of our school. Improving the quality and the use of this information is clearly central to raising standards of achievement. Effective assessment means:

o for pupils – increased understanding of what has been learned, guidance on future progress, and celebration of what has been achieved,

o for teachers – giving information that will identify achievement, recognise strengths and weaknesses and help plan future work for the individual or group,

o for parents/carers – clear communication about children’s achievement which will encourage involvement and contribution.

Pupils with Special Educational/Language Needs The National Code of Practice helps us to assess when a child needs additional support. If we feel a child may benefit from special needs support, we will always consult with parents. If you feel that your child has special needs, please talk to your child’s class teacher. We have a part time teacher who supports children with language needs.

The Curriculum What is the curriculum? The curriculum is the learning experience, formal and informal, inside and outside the classroom, which we provide for our pupils. The overriding purpose is to give pupils an education that is intrinsically worthwhile, prepares them for life beyond school and lays the foundation for lifelong learning. The school curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that we plan for our children. The central aims of our curriculum are to work in collaboration with families and the local community to provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve; to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. The curriculum of the school is organised so that children are stimulated, encouraged and challenged to develop their individual potential and personality to the full. At New Marston Primary School our curriculum meets the needs and interest of our children. It is constantly evolving to develop the skills needed for children to become successful learners, help prepare them for life in modern Britain and empower them to achieve success in the future. Our aim, to deliver a dynamic and innovative curriculum that challenges, excites and inspires children to become successful and confident learners and achieve their best. This is the main driving force behind how we design and deliver our curriculum. The school’s curriculum promotes and sustains a thirst for knowledge and understanding, and a love of learning. It covers a wide range of subjects and provides opportunities for academic, technical, creative and sporting excellence. It has a very positive impact on all pupils’ behaviour for learning, and contributes very well to children’s academic achievement, their physical well-being, and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Our curriculum is planned in themes, with topics chosen to capture the interests and imaginations of our children. Skills-based learning is developed by linking subjects such as History, Geography, Art, Design Technology and Music to the topic being studied. This allows children to make purposeful links in their learning. We also use every opportunity to make further links through Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and Computing where relevant. Physical and Religious Education are often taught as discreet subjects to allow coverage of the main objectives and age appropriate skill development. As we have many families from a variety of nationalities, we also teach International Education which involves learning a love of different languages and cultures. As the children enter KS2 we teach Spanish as our main additional language. The children are also taught to develop behaviour for learning through Personal and Social Education.

Values At New Marston Primary School, we develop an understanding of values. Values are principles that drive behaviour. They influence our actions and attitudes and become our framework for living. They influence our relationship with ourselves and others. The wide range of positive human values encouraged includes patience, respect, fairness, tolerance, respect, compassion and collaboration. (See School Values, above) Children learn what values are, how to recognise them, and how people react to them, equipping them with invaluable social skills and emotional intelligence. Visitors to the School Visitors have a valuable role to play and can contribute to many aspects of the life and work of the school. They deliver talks, workshops and full day activities across a wide range of subjects, giving pupils access to outside experiences and expertise. Visitors provide a link with the wider community. Children have the opportunity to work alongside artists, scientists, musicians, authors, health professions and others. We also have strong links with Oxford University, Brookes University and Oxford High School. Educational Visits Educational Visits are an integral part of the education of children at New Marston Primary School. We value the opportunities such visits offer our children and the commitment of staff and adults undertaking them. Trips include class visits aimed at bringing learning alive and providing first-hand experience; extra-curricular outings such as activities with the school or sporting events; and attending or taking part in performances or competitions. Oxford City is on our doorstep and provides a rich and inspirational learning resource. Children in Years 2, 4 and 6 have the opportunity to take part in residential visits. These are planned to provide new and exciting experiences. Extra-Curricular Clubs As a school we offer children opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities after school. A wide range of clubs is on offer – our programme of clubs and activities available is revised termly depending on the time of year and other commitments children may have. Sport We have a full-time qualified sports coach to provide high quality instruction during PE lessons and run sporting activities after school. Children in KS2 benefit from swimming lessons at a local indoor pool. Assemblies A rounded programme of multi faith assemblies help to promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and provide clear guidance on what is right and what is wrong. We also have weekly singing assemblies and sharing assemblies that parent/carers are invited to attend.

The school has a home school agreement to support the partnership between home and school and foster shared dialogue. Parent/carers and others are involved in policy development through consultation and working parties. The school’s website has a wealth of information including our newsletters, class pages and copies of key policies. This is currently being updated with a new design that will work on mobile phones and tablets. You can also follow the school on Facebook and Twitter. @marstonnew and www.facebook.com/nmps.org Parent/carers receive letters and newsletters straight to their email inbox by signing up to Call Parent.

Joining the School

Please call us on 01865 761560 any time to arrange a visit. Admission Requirements Administration of admission arrangements to our school is dealt with centrally by Oxfordshire County Council. A booklet ‘Starting School’, setting out the Reception admissions procedures and criteria for each school, together with an application (Common Admission Preference Form) is available from the County Council Admissions Team. Completed forms, or online admissions must be returned to the School Admission Team at the County Council or by the submission date in January prior to starting in September. Parent/Carers are reminded that having a child enrolled in our Nursery does not guarantee a fulltime reception place. ALL children, regardless of whether or not they attend our Nursery, need to apply via the County Council to secure a fulltime Reception place. Parents/carers of children seeking to join the school in other years, should in the first instance contact the school to ensure there is a place and then contact the in-year admissions team of the County Council on 01865 815175. New Marston Primary School welcomes all children regardless of special needs or disability. Children with additional needs may have extra visits before starting school and there will be close liaison with parent/carers to ensure that the correct arrangements are in place. Nursery Admissions Administration of Nursery admission arrangements are dealt with directly via the school office. Children need to apply two terms before their third birthday to secure a place. Children aged three and four receive fifteen free hours of education funded by the government.

Page 15: New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019...New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019 A warm welcome from the Headteacher – Tracey Smith New Marston Primary School has

Starting School for the First Time Starting school is a very important time for you, your child and the school. We all need to work together to make the transition smooth and rewarding. In the term prior to their entry, children are invited into school for visits. This will help them become familiar with the surroundings and routines of school. During this period, there will be meetings for parents to discuss our partnership with you and talk about any concerns you might have. Nursery children are admitted the term after their third birthday in September, January or April. Reception children will be admitted to New Marston Primary School in the September of the academic year in which they are five. The Early Years curriculum is grounded in active learning. Through practical activities, purposeful play and talk, pupils develop an understanding of the world and the basic concepts they will need for their later learning. Parents can play a major role in fostering good attitudes to learning, developing language skills and promoting good behaviour. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfill their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is very important. Good parenting and high-quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all Early Years’ providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life. At New Marston Primary School, we value the potential of home-school links and make every effort to involve parent/carers in the learning and development of their child. At the start of each new school year, class teachers run workshops about the curriculum and how parent/carers can help their child at home. Joining School Later on and International Children Sometimes children join the school later on in their school life. Due to the Universities and the Hospital we have many families visiting from around the world for one to two years. We make every effort to ensure all children are welcomed, looked after, and monitored so that they quickly make friends and can find their way around the school. Teachers give children time to settle in before making an assessment of their academic abilities. This assessment, together with records from the previous school, will enable your child to have the best start in our school. Parent/Carers are asked to contact the school if their child has difficulty settling. Moving on to Secondary School At the end of primary school, children transfer to a secondary school. The large majority of children go on to The Cherwell School, an outstanding mixed comprehensive school in North Oxford. As we are run by the same Trust we enjoy very strong links with The Cherwell School through the curriculum and community events. Year 6

Page 16: New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019...New Marston Primary School Prospectus 2018-2019 A warm welcome from the Headteacher – Tracey Smith New Marston Primary School has

pupils make several visits to The Cherwell School during their final year as part of an induction programme. This is seen as a very positive process ensuring a smooth transfer.

Equality

Equality At New Marston Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunities for all children, staff, parents and carers receiving services from the school, irrespective of race, gender, disability, faith or religion or socio- economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and able to participate fully in school life. The school recognises it has to make special efforts to ensure that all groups prosper including:

• Boys and girls, men and women

• All minority ethnic groups including travellers, refugees and asylum seekers

• Children or families with different religions or beliefs including those with no religious beliefs

• Children and others with special educational needs

• Children who are looked after and their carers

• Children or staff who are gay or lesbian The achievement of children is monitored by race, gender, disability, PP, ethnicity, SN, EAL and we use this data to support children, raise standards and ensure inclusive teaching. We tackle discrimination by:

• The positive promotion of equality, challenging bullying and stereotypes and creating an environment which champions respect for all. As a school we believe that diversity is a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit us.

• As a school we try to ensure that disabled pupils, parents/carers and visitors can play as full a part as possible in school life. We implement accessibility plans, which are aimed at:

o Increasing the extent to which disabled pupils can participate in the curriculum.

o Improving the physical environment of schools to enable disabled pupils to take better advantage of education, benefits, facilities and services provided.

o Improving the availability of accessible information to disabled children. Safeguarding New Marston Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. Staff work hard to maintain an environment where children feel safe and secure. The curriculum is designed to ensure opportunities for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse. Children know that they can approach any of the adults in school if they are worried and that they will receive a consistent supportive response.

In recognising our responsibilities for Safeguarding and Child Protection, as a school we:

• Have clear staff recruitment and selection procedures, ensuring that all staff (including volunteers) who have unsupervised access to children, have been appropriately checked for their suitability through the DBS procedure and received Safeguarding Training.

• Aim to raise awareness of child protection issues and equip children with the skills needed to keep them safe.

• Develop and implement procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases of abuse.

• Support children who have been abused in accordance with his/her Child Protection Plan.

• Establish a safe and nurturing environment free from discrimination or bullying where children can learn and develop happily.

Behaviour for Learning At New Marston Primary School, we believe that children learn best in a well-organised, calm and secure environment where purposeful and self-disciplined behaviour is expected. We want every child in our school to feel confident, happy and safe. As a caring school we have the highest of expectations in terms of learning, behaviour and attitudes, and encourage our children to develop similar beliefs in their own potential, together with pride in their achievement. The aims of the school are consistently promoted in each classroom and around the school. They are there to emphasise positive behaviour and collaboration in striving for excellence. These are embodied in the principles of our Behaviour for Learning Policy. We promote and celebrate sustained effort and hard work, and contributions towards the school community. All forms of bullying and harassment are unacceptable and are not tolerated within the school environment. All incidents will be taken very seriously and followed up in accordance with our Anti-bullying Policy which is available via the school’s website. The school’s expectations of behaviours for learning is communicated to children, parent/carers and staff at all times. All staff are expected to deal with any discriminatory incident that may occur. They are expected to know how to identify and challenge prejudice and stereotyping; and to support the full range of diverse needs according to children’s individual circumstances. As a school we believe bullying is best prevented through an ethos based on mutual respect and equality. The raising of children’s self-esteem and self-confidence is central to the work and life of the school. We recognise that in the school environment bullying can have a devastating effect on learning and the emotional health and well-being of children. Challenging bullying effectively will improve the safety and happiness of children, show that

the school cares and make clear to bullies that such behaviour is unacceptable. In addition, these benefits translate into improved life outcomes for children, a more satisfying working life for staff, and a more successful and inclusive school community. Catering for the Needs of All Children At New Marston Primary School, we believe that every child is unique and special, and we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all. We are committed to developing cultures, policies and practices that are inclusive. We have systems to identify when children have barriers affecting their learning and tailor specific interventions to enable pupils to overcome their barriers. This practice of personalising learning applies to all children across the learning spectrum including children who are identified as more able, gifted and talented. Children succeed highly at our school in many aspects. Excellence is encouraged and celebrated. Work is well planned, challenging and differentiated appropriately and the whole-school curriculum is planned to provide exciting and creative learning opportunities. Expectations are consistently high across the school and children are encouraged to be independent thinkers and learners, and to have enquiring minds. Where children are identified as needing additional learning or behavioural support, the school adheres to the SEND Code of Practice. We ensure that each child’s needs are individually and appropriately catered for, and that any relevant outside agencies are involved in providing guidance and support. Through assessments and/or observations a teacher may feel a child needs to be placed on the Special Needs Register. With support from the Inclusion Leader, provision is carefully planned. The Inclusion Leader is

responsible for supporting, planning and monitoring interventions and children’s profiles. This

monitoring is used to ensure systems are effective and impact positively on pupil progress.

Following discussions with parent/carers, children may be placed onto the SEN Register at

some point in their school career. For many, this involves a short burst of targeted

intervention which may lead to them being removed again, while for others the support

process is a longer one. In all cases our aim is to provide the very best education for each

child, allowing all children to fully achieve their potential. Our Policy for Inclusion and

Special Educational Needs and Disability can be accessed via the school’s website.

The River Learning Trust

The River Learning Trust (RLT) was formed in November 2015. RLT is a Multi-Academy Trust responsible for several schools and a school centered initial teacher training (SCITT) provider within Oxfordshire; the schools and SCITT are united by their commitment to the principles of the Trust and a common belief in the benefits of everything that is gained by working together.

The Principles of the River Learning Trust The River Learning Trust (RLT) is a multi-academy trust responsible for a number of schools

and a school centred initial teacher training provider within Oxfordshire; the schools and

SCITT are united by their commitment to the principles of the trust and a common belief in

the benefits of everything that is gained by working together.

The principles of the RLT

The River Learning Trust is a community of children, young people and adults with shared

principles including:

• Commitment to Excellence; striving for the best educational experience

• Everyone Learning; creating and taking opportunities that enhance lives

• Respectful Relationships; acting with care, integrity, and fairness in all we do

What our principles mean for our people and our schools:

The aims of the RLT

We work together across the trust for the benefit of our pupils, students and staff, our

principles shaping all that we do.

• Commitment to excellence:

We aim for our schools to have the highest standards of behaviour, academic work,

extra-curricular provision and teaching, and for our SCITT to excel in the quality of

training and outcomes of trainees. We will support our pupils, trainees and our staff

to be highly successful, recognising that success comes in a wide variety of ways,

growing a culture of continual improvement where we look to provide the best

possible educational experience. Working together across the schools and SCITT

within the trust we will expect high standards from ourselves and each other.

• Everyone Learning:

Schools are learning communities for pupils and for staff; we will develop a culture

that builds a thirst and excitement for learning where our pupils and our staff make

the most of the opportunities available to them. Pupils, students, trainees and staff

will benefit from the principles of a ‘Growth Mindset’; they will develop resilience,

be willing to take risks and develop new knowledge skills and understanding. They

will understand that their abilities are not fixed, and this will ensure that they seek

new challenges. Our pupils, students and trainees will learn with excellent teachers

and our teachers will have excellent professional learning behaviours and

opportunities. Schools in the Trust will work together to support and challenge each

other, to share what is best and learn from what is working well; we will seek to

direct resources and learning to secure the best education possible for our pupils,

students and staff. We will be truly inclusive for all pupils, students and trainees,

offering a rich and excellent educational experience whatever their academic ability,

social background or special educational need. We aim to ensure that every

individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives, celebrating the

differences within our communities and seeking to learn from this diversity. Our

pupils, students and trainees will learn to create, lead and support diverse

communities, bringing out the best in everyone.

• Respectful Relationships:

Acting with care, integrity, and fairness will be demonstrated within schools, the

SCITT, and across the trust as we work together to achieve our aims; we will create a

culture which places strong emphasis on trust and openness which encourages all to

seek shared solutions, acting in the best interests of young people. We will continue

to grow school communities where character matters for pupils, students, trainees

and staff; how we treat other people and our responsibilities to ourselves, others and

our communities will be at the heart of our schools. Not only will our pupils and

students leave our schools with academic attainment to ensure success at the next

stage of their lives, they will also have developed the social and interpersonal skills

and qualities which will see them be successful throughout their lives; we will

provide opportunities which develop character and confidence so that our young

people leave school with strong academic attainment alongside personal resilience,

clear values and leadership abilities.
