Think of the skills when you ask:

Should I stay in a dorm, apartment or a boarding house? My allowance is delayed. What will I do now? What’s the fastest route home to avoid heavy traffic?Who should I vote for?Where can I get reliable news? What is the most efficient tool for this project? How can I get my image out there so companies

will hire me?

Page 22: New Media, New Literacy

What does this mean for the classroom?

New Media, New Literacies

It means we need to rethink the tool we use and the types of problems we ask our students to solve.

How could you gather and discuss data via FB, cell phone, crowdsourcing, online surveys, RSS, Twitter?

How could you talk about reliable sources using search engines, MS Office 2010 Web Applications, podcasts, Diigo, del.icio.us, blogs?

How could students publish and evaluate work using pictures, videos, Scratch, Kodu, Wiki, Ning?

How could students collaborate using Skype, SkyDrive, Microsoft Lync, cellular phone, Twitter, Facebook?

How could struggling students benefit from Virtual Manipulatives, Audacity, Wordle, video lessons, Bubbl.us?

Page 23: New Media, New Literacy

Think of the possibilities?

New Media, New Literacies

What skills could students gain from this

process?

What kinds of discussions could this create in

the class room?

How could students share, collaborate,

compare, publish these ideas?

How do we manage laptops, cell phones, tablets inside the classroom?

New Media, New Literacies

The same way we manage papers, textbooks, pencils,

notecards.

The tools provide temptation, but they are not the

source of negative behavior.

Any lesson you create, no matter what tools are used

has to be relevant, challenging, engaging.

Page 27: New Media, New Literacy

New Media, New Literacies

These tools are no longer about pure entertainment.

Students do NOT need to be entertained.

They need to be engaged.

Entertainment is not the same as engagement

Entertainment can and should be fun and exciting.

Our charge is to provide meaningful and powerful engagement.

Where does it start?
