Emergency unlocking of vehicle in case of an accident

The doors are not automatically unlocked in case of an accident.

    Notes:

We recommend depositing the second key or the spare key in an accompanying vehicle. After an accident, unlocking the vehicle from the outside is only possible by using the mechanical key element.

The automatic emergency unlocking in case of an accident function can be reprogrammed by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Seats

The vehicle is designed for and intended only to carry four occupants.

    Windshield wiper intermittent wipe

Due to the thicker windshield, the vehicle is not equipped with a rain sensor.

When intermittent wipe is selected, the windshield is wiped at a fixed interval.

  • 6Windows

    Windows

Due to the thickness and angle of the windshield, side windows and rear windows, reflections can occur and it is possible for the view to be distorted slightly in areas around the window frames.

    Windows with plastic inner layer

    Important!

Do not use ammonia-based glass cleaner on inside of windows. It will damage the protective plastic layer.

Clean windows using water only (if necessary, add a small quantity of a mild dish washing liquid or soap).

Only clean with a grit-free chamois, using light pressure.

The plastic inner layer of the windows is highly prone to scratching which will result in the necessity for expensive repairs not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

To prevent damage, observe the following instructions:

Before attaching stickers or other objects (i.e. toll booth passes, garage/gate openers) you must affix a mounting patch, see page 7.

Avoid contact with hard objects (e.g. ice scrapers, rings).

    Do not use de-icer spray.

    Rear window blind

    Note:

To prevent damage to the plastic inside surface of the rear window, take care to ensure that the rollers of the rear window blind remain free of dirt and other contamination.

    Rear doors window blinds

    Note:

To prevent damage to the plastic inside surface of the rear door windows when handling the rear door window blinds avoid contact between parts of the window blinds and the windows.

Mounting patch for labels, stickers, and adhesive fastening mechanisms

    Important!

To prevent damage to the protective plastic layer on the inside of window, do not affix labels, stickers, or adhesive fastening mechanisms for toll or like devices without mounting patch.

To affix labels, stickers and adhesive fastening mechanisms on the inside of windows, mount them on a mounting patch (located in the manual pouch).

    To affix mounting patch:

    1. Clean windshield in the mounting target area, preferably above the windshield glass certification markings on the driver side or just above the MB Signature Label on the passenger side. Clean with a mild soap and water solution to remove any dirt and grease. Do not use ammonia-based glass cleaner on inside of windows, it will damage the protective plastic layer. Do not scrub with any abrasive materials. Dry using only a grit-free chamois cloth. Apply light pressure only.

    2. Leave the mounting-patch in its original size. Do not custom-size the patch by trimming its edges or cutting it. If the label, sticker, or fastening mechanism you wish to affix is larger than the mounting patch, use an additional mounting patch

    3. Remove backing from one or more patches and apply patch to the target area immediately after removing backing to ensure adhesive retention. Make sure the label patch top and bottom edge are level with the horizon. Make sure that all edges are firmly affixed to the windshield. Do not use any sharp objects to press on patch.

    4. Apply the sticker or fastening mechanism to the patch, centering it within the patch perimeter.

    Warning!

The mounting patch should be affixed on the windshield only.

Place the patch and any labels, stickers and fastening mechanisms you wish to affix on the patch in such a way that they do not limit the driver’s field of view.

    To remove mounting patch:

    Caution!

Removal of the patch will result in the destruction of the patch and any labels/stickers affixed to it. State motor vehicle regulations require that after removal, inspection, registration and any other official stickers unique to a vehicle cannot be in a condition to be transferred to and used on another vehicle. The mounting patch was designed to comply with such regulations. Both patch and any labels/stickers affixed to it are destroyed when removed.

    1. Remove mounting patch carefully using your fingers. Do not use razor blades or other sharp objects.

    2. Clean windows. For notes on cleaning windows, see page 6.

    Power windows

Mercedes-Benz Guard S 500 vehicles do not include automatic opening and closing functions.

    Doors

Due to gas spring assistance and added weight, doors may open more easily and quicker than expected.

    Warning!

When closing the windows, be sure that there is no danger of anyone being harmed by the closing procedure.

If the closing of a side window is interfered with or disrupted, the closing process will not be automatically stopped.

To open a window, press the k symbol on the appropriate switch.

To switch on - press upper half of the switch. The indicator lamp in the switch lights up.

To switch off - press lower half of the switch. The indicator lamp in the switch goes out.

    Notes:

Clear ice and snow from the outside of the windshield before switching the windshield defroster on.

The windshield defroster has a high current draw. For this reason, it should be switched off as soon as the windshield is clear.

The windshield defroster will switch off automatically after a maximum of 11 minutes.

If a number of electrical consumers are switched on or if the battery is insufficiently charged, the windshield defroster may switch off earlier. In this case, the indicator lamp will flash.

As soon as sufficient voltage is available again, the defroster will automatically switch back on.

  • 11Wheels

Wheels with emergency running characteristicsDSST (Dunlop Self Supporting Technology)

If a significant drop in pressure is indicated by the tire pressure monitor, replace the wheel with the spare wheel to avoid wheel rim and tire damage. For notes on the tire pressure monitor, see the S-Class Operator’s Manual.

    Note:

Check tire pressures at regular intervals and correct as necessary.

    Fuses

The fuse for the windshield defroster (50 A) is located under the battery support on the rear right-hand wheel well.

    Lifting of vehicle

When lifting the vehicle make certain the lifting device (e.g. hoist, jack) has sufficient load-bearing capacity.

    Warning!

In the event of emergency mode tire operation, vehicle handling capability is diminished. For example, the vehicle will not corner or brake as effectively, or accelerate as rapidly as under normal operational conditions.

In the event of emergency mode tire operation do not exceed a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) and/or a running distance of 12 miles (approx. 20 km).

After driving in the emergency running mode, the tire and the wheel rim must be replaced.

  • 12Jump starting

    Jump starting Important!

A discharged battery can freeze at approx. +14°F (-10°C). In that case, it must be thawed out before jumper cables are used. Attempting to jump start a frozen battery can result in it exploding, causing personal injury.

    Jumper cable specifications:

    • Minimum cable cross-section of 25 mm2 or approx. 2 AWG

    • Maximum length of 11.5 ft. (3.5 m).

If the battery is discharged, the engine should be started with jumper cables and the (12 V) battery of another vehicle.

Only use 12 V battery to jump start your vehicle. Jump starting with more powerful battery could damage the vehicle’s electrical systems, which will not be covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

The vehicle’s batteries are located in the luggage compartment and are not easily accessible. For this reason, there are battery terminals located under hood on the left-hand wheel well in the engine compartment.

    Warning!

Failure to follow these directions will cause damage to the electronic components, and can lead to a battery explosion and severe injury or death.

Never lean over batteries while connecting or jump starting, you might get injured.

Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow this fluid to come in contact with eyes, skin or clothing. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary.

A battery will also produce hydrogen gas, which is flammable and very explosive. Keep flames or sparks away from battery, avoid improper connection of jumper cables, smoking etc..

    Read all instructions before proceeding.

    1 Positive terminal cover

2 Positive (+) under hood terminal

3 Negative (–) under hood terminal

    Proceed as follows:

    1. Position the vehicle with the charged battery so that the jumper cables will reach, but never let the vehicles touch. Make sure the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation.

    2. On both vehicles:

    • Turn off engine and all lights and accessories, except hazard warning flashers or work lights.

    • Apply parking brake and shift selector lever to position “P”.

    Important!

    3. Lift cover (1) and clamp one end of the first jumper cable to the positive (+) under hood terminal of the discharged battery and the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the charged battery. Make sure the cable clamps do not touch any other metal parts.

    4. Clamp one end of the second jumper cable to the grounded negative (–) terminal of the charged battery and the final connection to the negative (–) under hood terminal (3) of the disabled vehicle.

  • 14Jump starting

    Important!

    5. Start engine of the vehicle with the charged battery and run at high idle. Make sure the cables are not on or near pulleys, fans, or other parts that move when the engine is started. Allow the discharged battery to charge for a few minutes. Start engine of the disabled vehicle in the usual manner.

    6. After the engine has started, remove jumper cables by exactly reversing the above installation sequence, starting with the last connection made first. When removing each clamp, make sure that it does not touch any other metal while the other end is still attached.

    Notes:

If engine does not run after several unsuccessful starting attempts, have it checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Excessive unburned fuel may damage the catalytic converter.

The engine can be jump-started when it is cold and the catalytic converter has cooled down. Avoid repeated and lengthy attempts to start the engine.

Do not attempt to start the engine using a quick charger.

For how to recharge the battery, see Operator’s Manual.
