GOLDEN EQUIPMENT DONATES $14,625 TO LOBO VOLLEYBALL
New Mexico volleyball program and head coach Jeff Nelson are proud to announce that Golden Equipment Company has presented a donation of $14,625 to the UNM volleyball program. The donation, which is part of Golden’s “Colors for our Community” service program, is tabbed to help the continue the development of the Lobo volleyball program, including the beach volleyball team as it enters its second season next week.“We are so grateful to Golden for their support of Lobo Athletics and for this amazing contribution to our volleyball programs,” Nelson said. “Because of efforts like the one Golden has made on our behalf we can do so much more for our program and student athletes. I also want to thank alum Jeanne Fairchild for her involvement in getting this program tied to Lobo Volleyball.”In Golden’s “Colors for our Community” program, Golden choses an organization, nonprofitor charity and decorates one of its pieces of equipmentinthecolorsorlogosorthebenefitingorganization. For 12 months, Golden’s rents out that equipment, with a portion of the proceeds goingbacktothebeneficiary. In 2015, the Lobo Club was picked for “Colors for our Community”, with all of the proceeds generated by the UNM-themed excavator going toward Lobo Volleyball. The $14,625 raised for Lobo Volleyball is the most ever raised by one of Golden’s “Colors for our Community” campaigns.
A primer on beach volleyballBeach volleyball and court volleyball share many of the same basic rules. Each side gets three hits, there’s rally scoring, and a team earns a points when the ball hits the ground or goes out of bounds. But there are some key difference between the two sports: • Beach volleyball is a partner sport played
during the spring. Court volleyball is a six-player sport played during the fall.
• Beach volleyball plays the best of three sets, withthefirsttwosetsplayedto21points,andatiebreaker set played to 15 points, if necessary. A set must be won by at least two points.
• Open-handed tipping is prohibited in beach volleyball and the block touch counts as one of three permitted contacts.
• Coaches may only speak or give any kind of input to their players during timeouts or between sets.
• Beach volleyball players switch sides of the court every seven points during a 21-point set andeveryfivepointsduringa15-pointset.
• Beach volleyball is usually contested in dual matches, where the winning team is the school that wins three of five individualmatches versus its opponent. Similar in format to tennis, each of those individual matches consist of a doubles — a pair of teammates ranked by ability — that are matched against their corresponding doubles from the opposing team.
NCAA approves beach Volleyball as 90th Championship
The NCAA approved beach volleyball as the 90th NCAA Championship at the 2015 NCAA Convention, allowing the sport to advance from the emerging sports for women list to a full-fledgedNCAAchampionshipinspring2016.The NCAA Beach Volleyball Committee also determined the sport will be officially referredto as “beach volleyball”. When the sport was placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, it was called sand volleyball. But because the sport is known as beach volleyball at all other levels of play throughout the world, the committee made its decision to refer to the sport as beach volleyball. The inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships will take place May 6-8, 2016 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shore, Ala. The championship will have an eight-team bracket that will be played in a double-elimination format.Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 48 colleges and universities sponsoring it as of January 2016. NCAA rules require 40 sponsoring schools to request an NCAA championship. Data shows that on average, 60 percent of participants at a sponsoring school participate only in beach volleyball instead of playing both beach and indoor volleyball.
