What is LEED?• LEED is an internationally accepted
benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings established by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
• It provides the tools necessary to have an immediate and measurable impact on buildings performance.
The LEED Parameters on VOC
Coating Type VOC Limits Standard
Architectural Flat Paints 50 g/L Green Seal GS-11
Architectural Non-Flat Paints (Primers) 150 g/L Green Seal GS-11
Anti-Corrosive and Anti-Rust Coatings 250 g/L Green Seal GS-03
Floor Coatings All Floor Coatings 100 g/L SCAQMD Rule 1113
VOC Compliance
• Reducing VOC content is one of the current issues to address in reducing the environmental impacts of decorative coatings products.
• Directive 2004/42/EC of the European Directive 1999/13/EC have now been implemented in the UK through Statutory Instrument (SI) 2005 No. 2773 `The Volatile Organic Compounds in Paints, Varnishes and Vehicle Refinishing Products Regulations
• 100% of current ICI Paints Trade products already comply with 2007 requirements, 75% already comply with 2010 requirements. Plans are in place to fulfill the requirements on time.

Curing of Water Based Paints
The physical drying of a coating based on a polymeric resin dissolved in an organic solvent is different from the film forming mechanism employed in more recent water-based paints. While the first dries through rapid evaporation of the solvent, leaving the hard resin film on the substrate, the latter hardens in a two-step process—water evaporates and leaves the resins and pigments in dispersed particles on the surface. These particles then merge and form the film, followed by a chemical process called “polymerization”—chemical bonds form between small, soluble building blocks to generate a polymeric resin made up of long, non-soluble chain molecules.

The Science of Color by Dulux
Hue - Defines the color or color family. Red, Yellow and Blue represent the basic color families to which a given shade can be assigned. The outer band shows the hue circuit. o Light Reflectance - Describes the lightness or darkness of a color. The lighter the color, the more light it reflects. The central axis [column] presents a gradient of greys between the colors of white, at the top, and black towards the bottom. o Chroma - Describes the intensity or saturation of a color. Strong colors like Racy Red have a high chroma factor while soft shades like Muted Rose have a low level of chroma. The degree of chroma progressively lessens, as you move from the outer band to the central axis.
Changing any one of these three dimensions creates the vast array of colors in the Master Palette.

NAD RESIN----- ICI TECHNOLOGY
CarbonationThe water in the pores of the cement is normally alkaline. This alkaline environment is one in which the steel is passive and does not corrode.
The carbon dioxide from the air reacts with the alkali in the cement and makes the pore water more acidic, thus lowering the pH. Carbon dioxide will start to carbonate the cement in the concrete from the moment the object is made.
This process (called carbonation) will start at the surface, then slowly move deeper and deeper into the concrete. If the object is cracked, the carbon dioxide of the air will be better able to penetrate into the concrete.
When designing a concrete structure, it is normal to state the concrete cover for the rebar (the depth within the object that the rebar will be).
