Four years ago, Tina Weber Smith A74 created a Facebook page for the MSJ Alums and called it “MSJ GIRLS.” Since its creation, we have found and reconnected to 292 alums! It’s been a great forum for sharing photos and stories as well as sharing prayer requests and needs. At various times, we have also sent a deluge of cards (birthday, get well, sympathy) to family members of our alums. Recently, Mary Jo Sweatt Nault A49 pointed out that we were suddenly having a lot of prayer requests for Mount girls suffering from various illnesses and surgeries. She suggested that we set a time and “blast them all into wellness together.” She noted that it would be like evening prayer in the MSJ Chapel again. So many enthusiastically supported the idea that we set it in motion. Every Sunday at 6 p.m. (in whatever time zone they happen to be in), Mount girls stop what they are doing and spend some time in prayer, placing the spoken and unspoken prayer needs of our fellow alums into the loving hands of God. To extend the power of our evening prayer, we invite anyone who is not on Facebook to also join us at 6 p.m. as we send prayers for the health, needs, families and loved ones, along with prayers of thanksgiving for the blessings and gifts of all of our MSJ alums. Prayer is powerful, and more so when Mount girls are united together! Join us in moving mountains and creating miracles. – Carolyn Sue Cecil A73

Sister Vivian is a 1969 graduate of Brescia and began ministering there in 1973, teaching education classes and supervising secondary student teachers. She developed the psychology department and served as a professor of psychology and director of the Counseling Center until 1995, when she was named the fourth president of Brescia. She served in that role until 2007. She is currently director of faith formation at St. Alphonsus Parish in St. Joseph, Ky.

SISTER PAM MUELLER A68 (left) completed all requirements last summer to earn a graduate certificate in pastoral care from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. Spring greetings from Chile to all our wonderful alumnae! From the Dianna Ortiz Ursuline Center for Women (Casa Ursulina) in Chillán, we write to you with deep gratitude. You will remember that almost six years ago, you, our alumnae, made a marvelous decision. At the 2010 annual meeting, you decided that the annual $500 donation from the alumnae general fund – always directed toward an Ursuline ministry – should come to Casa Ursulina. In addition, the alumnae were invited to match this donation through personal gifts. You will be delighted to hear that the 2014-15 donations ($500 plus matching gifts) have set a record, coming to $1,777 in just this one year. And, what’s equally amazing: since 2010, Casa Ursulina has received close to $7,000 in alumnae donations . . . a substantial sum that’s worth even more when converted to Chilean pesos. Recognizing that the generosity of the alumnae sprang from gratitude for their Ursuline education, Sister Mimi and I “invented” the Mount Saint Joseph Alumnae Education Fund. Since 2010, this fund has been a godsend for a long list of Chilean students struggling to continue and complete their education, from elementary school through the university. Most of the women who come to Casa Ursulina are struggling to keep their families afloat, accepting whatever menial work is available – cleaning houses, taking care of children, sewing and creating craft items. If there are husbands with jobs, their pay is low and benefits skimpy or nonexistent. Sometimes

¡UN MONTÓN DE GRACIAS! they must wait months to receive their pay. Meeting school expenses – books, food, warm clothing (most schools are not heated in the cold Chilean winter), public transportation (there are no school buses, and most do not have cars) – is a constant challenge for these families. Your generosity helps make it possible for their children to get to school and to move toward a better way of life. All of you who are part of this wonderful project are partners in the ministry of Casa Ursulina. We hope you will sometimes think of these students and pray for them: Constanza, Daniela, Javier, Gabriela, Sebastian, Darling, Felipe, Matías, Nícolas, Miguel, Katerina . . . . It’s a long list that’s always growing longer. When we think about it, we realize that Casa Ursulina is an endeavor of Mount graduates: Sister Dianna Ortiz A77, for whom the ministry is named; Sister Mimi Ballard A66, founding director; and Sister Ruth Gehres A51, who keeps you informed about what’s happening “down under,” and a number of other Ursulines who have served in this ministry. And then there are all of you who help to support us! Your generosity reflects the bounty of our God. May God bless you abundantly.

Juanita struggles to support her children and keep them in school. She is a member of the Casa Ursulina community and has participated in CU craft projects. From left Juanita, Sebastian, Darling, Maxie.

We Extend Prayers and Sympathy to...

Dear Alumnae, We look forward to seeing all of you in May at the annual reunion. It is always so good to see everyone and share stories of the years we shared at Mount Saint Joseph

Academy. Those years were a great time for learning and discovery. We learned some great things from Sisters Agnese, Margaret Mary, Francesca and Charles Asa, who were in the Academy when I was there. We also discovered how easy it was to get demerits. I still look at the demerit post when I walk on the balcony of the Center. Whatever the memories, the years we spent at the Academy were a part of our lives and helped us become the women we are today. Some of the times may not have been easy, but we learned so much along with our classmates. Class of 1967, let’s start making plans for 2017. That will be a big year for us. Thank you to all of you who supported the annual fund of the Ursuline Sisters this year. Each year we receive wonderful donations from so many of you. It is a great way to say thank you for the education we received from our teachers here at the Mount. God bless you and those you love.
